View Full Version : The Best Pink Floyd album

I am curious to see what the local floydians think is the best album, whether it is based on personal taste, or belief that this or that transcends all the others.

This is a multiple choice poll, because this can be a hard decision. And no Gah- this is for Floyd fans only.

(You know what I am voting for.)

Unfortunately I've only listened to Dark Side of the Moon (and maybe only part of it), The Wall and perhaps another. So I can't really say. I'll have to get some more Floyd though, many of the songs I have are very good.

I might have to vote for two.

Well, I voted for DSOT, but it was a very close contest between that and Pulse, they are both fantastic Live albums.

Dark side of the moon comes third though, for the sheer fact it has Brain Damage on it.

I'd say Dark Side of the Moon, with Wish You Were Here and the Wall very close behind.

I am suprised noone has voted for :wall: live. I always thought it was a lot better than the studio version.

Wish You Were Here, followed closely by Dark Side of the Moon.

Although Animals, Meddle, and The Wall were great albums as well.

Ha! I Floyded the kids today. While I was doing the dishes and cooking their lunch (my woman is out) I put on the studio side of Ummagumma. They found a bit of it scary at times (they're seven and nine) but thought Grantchester Meadows and Several Small Species... were really good.

I've used Floyd on the kids before. When my two kids and our friend's kid were going absolutely bonkers one time, I made them all lie on the floor and listen to Echoes. The neighbours kid was passed out cold halfway though. My two just went hyper-mellow.

I voted for Wall as a close choice over Final Cut -- both are strongly integrated albums. DSOTM probably has the best songs.

That doesnt just happen to young kids :2thumbsup:

Try listening to Dark Side of the Moon, when drunk (I'm 18, honestly :laugh4: ), with your friends who all seem to want to jump around your tiny house messing up your furniture and trying to break your families most valuble possesions. As soon as DSOTM came on, we all mellowed out and started talking about "the good old days" when we were all young and innocent. the difference in the behaviour of my friends was astounding, nothing got broke! :laugh4:

Have any of you ever put on DSOTM and watched the wizard of Oz with it? The two are syncronized. Its truly an amazing experience

What you need to do it the Olde Fashioned Waye:
(To skip this and find out how to do it the EASY way click here)

1. You will need a factory copy of The Wizard of Oz (TWoOz) in either VHS or DVD format. For best results, the Definitive List (DL) suggests the use of either the 50th Anniversary edition or the digitally mastered THX version. A home-made copy from TV will not do, unless you taped it from a channel like the AMC or TCM with zero commercial interruptions, and it will need the 3 roars of the black & white MGM® lion at the beginning of the film.

2. You will also need The Dark Side of the Moon (DSTOM) CD by Pink Floyd. Do not attempt to do this using audio cassette tape, vinyl LP or a pirated CD you downloaded and burned from the Internet (if you have one you should be ashamed!) or you will find yourself sorely disappointed with the results. The DL suggests the use of either the 25th Anniversary, digitally mastered edition, or the hybrid SACD.

( or ) + ( or ) =

Virtually any combination of available factory media will work decently, but only the versions suggested above will yield the largest and juiciest crop of syncs, as are found on the DL. For those of you who already own both pieces of media, the way out of having to set it up each time may be found by clicking here.

HOW TO SET IT ALL UP
Firstly if you aren't familiar with Pink Floyd's The Dark Side of the Moon then wake up and smell the coffee! DSOTM is one of the finest pieces of secular contemporary music ever made. It dominated the charts in the 70s and 80s, spending 741 consecutive weeks on Billboard charts and only after it fell completely from the chart in 1987 for a short period of time, was it not reinserted, although it continues, on and off to this day to be one of the top 100 selling albums each week! Don't be a dope who just hears that you can sync up two pieces of media that you are unfamiliar with. Get familiar with the media individually before you throw them into the soup together or you won't really appreciate anything you are seeing or hearing with this experiment. Now that that's said ...

It will probably take you a few tries to get the sync lined up just right so be patient!
1.) Load the DSOTM CD into your CD player
2.) Press PLAY (>) and then immediately press PAUSE (II) so the CD is cued up and ready to roll. 3.) Set your CD player to Continuous Replay. In most CD players, this is done by pressing the "REPEAT" button twice which will engage the machine to play the CD repeatedly. Pressing it once will usually repeat only the current playing track. The CD will play about two and a quarter times through the entire length of the movie.

Now start the video and fast forward past all the preview junk at the beginning (about five minutes worth on the THX VHS version) . Once you have your VHS or DVD to the very beginning of the movie, where the BLACK & WHITE MGM lion roars, immediately after the BLACK & WHITE MGM Lion roars for the THIRD (3rd) time, press the PLAY button on the CD player. I overemphasize "black and white" in reference to the MGM Lion because, at least on the THX version there is a colour MGM Lion that appears prior to the black and white one.

Now turn down the sound volume on the TV, because the dialogue and original soundtrack are not necessary for this experiment -- neither should they even be considered. The DSOTM CD will provide all the sound you'll need.

You can basically gauge how well you've sync'd it based on how well #'s 1, 5 and 6 line up. #1 fades in perfectly, #5 has Dorothy touching the man's arm exactly on the word "touch" and #6 has the drumbeat syncing with the farmhand hitting his finger with the hammer immediately after the word "done". Don't worry if you have to restart it a few times. The effect is worth the trouble.

I've been made aware of potential problems with some portable compact stereos as well as some older models of component CD players, in that they either do not have a "repeat" function or the return response is a bit delayed (that is, the time it takes for the laser to move from the end of the CD back to the beginning for replay). Therefore, if this is kind of equipment you have, your results AFTER the first play-through will probably vary from this list. A few of those variances are mentioned in some places but it would be impossible to list all of the variations which can be found with the few CD players out there which have this handicap. You may rest assured that the FIRST AND BEST play-though works just fine. You can also avoid all of this trouble by clicking here.

Im telling you all this is a real trip.

Hey Beruit you got this one?

The Wall (1979) with Alice in Wonderland (1951, animated Disney classic)
Instructions:

Start the first CD at the beginning of the movie, right when the music of the movie starts. When it is complete, pause the movie. Start the second CD and unpause the movie at the same time. Also, you must skip "Comfortably Numb" on the second CD for the sync to work properly.

Clue:

Alice in Wonderland

ALice in WonderLand

Wonder (ALice) Land

W (AL) L

The WALL

Some things I noticed:

The Thin Ice

Alice cradles the cat like a baby during the crying in the song.

"And the sky may look blue" as Alice looks up at the blue sky.

"Baby blue" as a blue bird flies by.

"Don't be surprised, when a crack in the ice" as Alice sticks finger into the water creating ripples.

Another Brick in the Wall - part 1

"A snap shot in the family album" as Alice looks in a book.

Guitar part goes nicely with Alice rocking in the chair.

There are bricks in the wall towards the end of her fall.

There is a faint yelling when the door knob (with a face) is grabbed.

The Happiest Days of Our Lives

"By pouring their derision" while the tears flow from Alice's eyes.

Another Brick in the Wall - part 2

Sea creatures dance to the beat.

The bird represents the educator. "Teachers, leave the kids alone."

Mother

"Mother, do you think they'll try to break my balls?" when two balls appear in the sky: the sun and the moon.

Walrus represents the politician. "Mother, should I trust the government?"

"Hush now baby, don't you cry" as mother clam watches over baby clams.

"Mother, will she tear your little boy apart?" when sign appears that says 'Oysters on the half shell.'

Goodbye Blue Sky

"Did you see the frightened ones?" - bird looks frightened.

Young Lust

Horsefly rocks to the beat of the music.

One of My Turns

Crashing sound as water spills on Alice.

The sounds of cars passing by matches the letters floating by.

Don't Leave Me Now

Heavy breathing as caterpillar blows smoke letters.

"Don't leave me now" as Alice leaves him.

Another Brick in the Wall - part 3

Music intensifies as Alice gets really huge.

Goodbye Cruel World

"Goodbye" as Alice follows signs for a way out of Wonderland.

Hey You

"The wall [of smoke] was too high, as you can see."

"And the worms ate into his brain." The crazy man's hair almost looks like worms.

Is there anybody out there?

Tinkling noise as fireworks tinkle.

Nobody Home

"I've got wild staring eyes" as rabbit's eyes bug out.

Bring the Boys Back Home

"Time to go...time to go..." is one clue to skip the next song "Comfortably Numb."

Comfortably Numb (SKIP THIS SONG)

On remastered CD set, there is a minus sign next to this song, "6. Comfortably Numb -(6:23)" indicating that it should be skipped.

The Show Must Go On

The title of this song is another clue that "Comfortably Numb" must be skipped.

In the Flesh

Pink cat symbolizes the character Pink Floyd.

"Another with spots" refers to the cards.

Run Like Hell

Cards march to the beat of the music.

The Trial

Both the movie and the album end with a trial.

Outside the Wall

Music is very peaceful after she wakes up from the dream.

Actually, I find that The Wall lines up really well with "The Fellowship of the Ring." You have to start it so that the guitar kicks in about a half-second after the title, "The Lord of the Rings", appears. It does not have a ton of coincidences, but it tends to set the mood well.

Also, I have only tried it with the extended version of Fellowship- I have no idea how it works out with the theatrical verson.

All great albums.

Wish you were here

Dark side close second

Really like the alternate and studio versions of a lot of ummaguma and sid barret stuff, like the alternate version of Careful With That Axe Eugene, where it starts out as a love song called "green is the color of her eyes" then spirals into "..eugene"

Hate the wall. It's over produced and too whiney, if I want that I'll go buy an REM album.

We need a build your own album thread, as every album has songs I like but dislaike as well. I dont think "money" belongs on dark side and i don't like "have a cigar" on Wish. I really like that song on the Final Cut -- I can't remember the name of but love the lyrics -- "a place to stay, enough to eat, somewhere old heroes lumber safely down the street"

Of course Money belongs on DSOTM, the whole album is basically a 40 minute song

Nice to see Wish you were Here going ofr the lead as it should. If me and Jag agree on it you know it must be so. Its like one long song. As Ive said a real trip. DSOTM has been over played and is more commericial. Also Animals is really part of Wish You Were Here . It was supposed to be a double album. Put them together and its easily the best.

I saw Waters live back in... maybe '84 or so in Montreal. The Pros and Cons of Hitch Hiking Tour. Great show. Almost a circus. Not the highly refined visual extravaganza I saw at the Floyd concert, but more... fun.

We didn't have the best seats and I spent a lot of time looking at the band with binoculars. Near the end, while looking at the guitarist, I said "That guy looks a lot like Clapton." My friend's hand smacks me upside the head almost immediately. "That is Clapton you idiot."

:inquisitive: Wish You Were Here isn't one long song! There's a big gap between "Machine" and "Have a Cigar!"

The only album that Floyd managed to tie together as one long song is Dark Side. Admit it, Gawain... your music expert friends may tell you that Wish You Were Here/ Animals was better, but deep down in your heart you know that isn't true... you know that Dark Side is the best (excluding Barrett's work, of course). ~;)

Edit: Eugh... Roger Waters doing Dark Side? If it isn't the whole band, it's a crime against humanity. Kinda like "Creedence Clearwater Revisited."

To me, it's not so much the individual songs as the whole. True, Wish You Were Here has better individual songs overall (although I would contest that with "Any Color You Wish") but as a whole unit, I always thought Dark Side worked together much better. Part of that has to be because Dark Side wass the first Pink Floyd album I ever heard, and I have some very good memories associated with it, so to my ear the whole album seems to transcend anything else Floyd did, post-Barrett. In fact, Piper never struck me as being the best until about six months after I got it, by which time I knew both Piper and Dark Side note for note, and prolongued massive exposure to Floyd had worn away their ethereal quality. (Long story short, I listened to nothing but Floyd for three months straight, by which time I had already been listening to Dark Side daily for an additional three months, and I almost lost my mind... not sure where I am going with this, I guess I am just trying to show that I know Floyd, even though I haven't been around as long as you have.)

(...Where was I going with this? I need to get some sleep.)
