View Full Version : Warcry for Hoplites?

I don't often play barbararian factions so I don't know how much good a warcry does, but I have always read that hoplites would 'raise the paean', that is sing a hymn to apollo as they went into battle- and the spartans advanced to music- so- if the warcry ability has substantial advantages, shouldn't some advanced hoplite units be able to raise the paean?

Units can only have one "special ability". So you can't have both phalanx mode and warcry.
Add to that the problem that warcry is used only for barbarian factions, wich I think is hardcoded.

Its not hardcoded in 1.3 plus but the other is still true.
What's the special ability for overhand hoplites? I'm probably just being forgetful, but wouldn't they be the best candidates for singing the paean anyway? Or perhaps the Alala?

You know, this might sound daft but imagine if there was a musical instruments devision that you could have in your army.
They would basically operate like screeching women or druids from the vanilla total war but they would play some looping historically accurate song with their horns or whatever, and it would inspire their troops.
I think that would be pretty cool.

Great idea Viking. How about including musician model to certaim units, they would not need to give any bonuses. It would just give more depth to the units.

Even if 'Raising the Paean' can't be included as a special ability with bonuses, the units make noises during battle, so it would be relatively simple (famous last words) just to change the noises that the hoplite units make to be the Paean. That, I think, would be way cool.
If only I knew what it sounded like. I'll look into it. Of course the could just go. "Eleuleuleuleuleuleuleuleu" or do a 'Rebel Yell' kind of thing.

If we ever port to 1.6 they'll have to lose it for the shieldwall ability anyway.

To be honest, I like the current EB shieldwall better than the BI one, if you forget that the men are wielding the wrong weapon. The BI one is so packed that the units should not be able to move their weapons without hitting their neighbour.

Wouldn't be a bad idea IMO.
Some of the factions must have had music when going into battles.

Yes, we have to look beyond just what would be "cool" and consider what is also historically accurate. I don't doubt that some did use instruments and whatnot, but we can't overlook realism (and the fact that EB has already maxed out the units allowed by the game). Intriguing idea though.

Who the hell said it was just something I suggest for the sake of it being "cool"???
It's obvious that music has historically been used by armies in battle, the question is, is it a detail that Europea Barbarorum desperatly needs? Probably not, but it would be a "cool" detail.

Actually guys the pointthat I was trying to make is that we already have units shouting and screaming and making noises- so the issue is one of choosing which specific kinds of noise they make.
In the case of hoplite units we have historical information that they sang hymns before killing each other- and I found a sample of a reconstruction- see my thread 'listen to the paean'.
I accept that we can't give hoplite units a warcry special ability, so what I'm talking about is changing their soundtrack.
Whether or not 'cool' is sufficient reason to change something- well, why mod at all? I am sure that it's no-one's priority to add the paean to hoplite factions, butmaybe down the line it could be done- it just occured to me that the best time would actuallt be during the general's speech phase. That's when most untis just go 'aarrrgggghhhhh' anyways. Why not have them sing instead?
though musicians woudl be nice..think of the unit/model limit....

I wasn't trying to slam you viking.... I am sorry if it came off that way. I probably could of worded my post better to illustrate the point I was trying to make. I also may have been a little overzealous late last night when replying to this, and probably wasn't at my most intellectual state. I was just trying to say that there are many factors in deciding what to include in the game, like the unit model limits, and the unfortunate limit of only having one special ability per unit.

Ok, apology accepted, and I apologize for being agressive and confrontational.
I offer the gift of Europa Barbarorum Forum peace.

Um... well... wow... I don't know what to say. No one has ever offered me that as a gift before. :inquisitive: Oh, you mean you offer peace.... phew, for a second I thought it was going to turn into one of those full exposure moments. :sweatdrop:
