I am just to get my son for his 8th birthday a PS2, finally giving in to a long PR campaign from him!!
So I wondered what were good games to get -
firstly for my son, prefereably not dripping with blood etc, he is a big Sonic fan and is pretty adept on our PC - he plays AOE 1 at an easy level, surfs the net with ease etc - and his GBA
Secondly 2 player games, so I can play with him
and lastly - any good games for me!:idea2:

He's probably a bit young for the GTA series then...
Hey, you do know that the PS3 will be out by this Christmas? So if it's a PS2 now, or PS3 in 10 months, I'd advise the wait.
I'll do some searching and come back with a good list later.
^Or perhaps if you dont want a ps3, still wait. The PS2 sales price will drop dramtically when the PS3 comes out.
Anyway, if he's a big Sonic fan then how about Sonic Heroes.
Also Star Wars Lego, I'm fifteen and I still think it's quite good, a nice adventure game also it's great for parents as if they want to play for a while but then leave, the single player is the same as multiplayer (not online mp) so you can play for a little then drop out and your son will still be playing exactly the same game just with an AI helper not a human. On Amazon it's around £10.

I did know that the PS 3 was due later this year - I think that makes it a good time to buy a PS2 because the price is coming down on the console and the games! - we got a GBA for him on the back of the PSP last year.
The other reason for a PS2 is so many of his friends have them that it will be easy to swop games etc. I see plenty of life in the system, and when he tires in a few years time, I expect PS3 or PSP will be down to a reasonable price. Still, looking forward to your suggestions. I particuarly like the idea of 2 player games - not an easy option on the PC.~

Sonic heros is a definate possibility - he has the demo on our PC. He is also desparate for Lego star Wars as our PC was not up to spec for it - very disconcerting when a 7 year old keeps saying "dad - we need a better graphics card!!":laugh4:

Lol.
But yeah it's got some good unlockables to keep it interesting. The only downside is your cant die, basically you collect the game's version of Crash Bandicoot apples, Sonic rings etc, so when you lose all your hearts (I think you start with 5) you just lose a load of knuts and respawn in the same place. It does mean the less nuts you have the less you can buy/upgrade however it makes the game very easy, it's still fun though :thrasher:
Buy the sounds of it then he likes LSW, Sonic it's mostly the adventure style games he's interested in? In that case you'll be looking at the likes of Crash Bandicoot (the latest titles, after number 3, have gone down hill though imo), Ratchett and Clank, Jak and Daxter and Sly Racoon (I've not played SR, J&D or R&C, so I cant really say much about them).
The Burnout series was extremely fun, graphically astounding and devoid of bloodshed or death. The high-velocity car crashes, though, might be enough to make some parents think twice. It has 2-player support as well, so that's a bonus if you decide it's alright.

For your boy;
Any game with Crash Bandicoot in the title. They are violent but in a bugs Bunny sort of way. And the Mario cart rip off, crash team racing, is multiplayer.
Jak and Daxter (the sequels Jak 2 and Jak 3 are more for teens)
Sly Cooper
Ico
For both of you;
Tekken tag tournament, 4, and 5. They are fighting games but they don't have blood. Just orange/red flashes when you punch somone.
Burnout series
Marvel vs. Capcom 1 and 2
Gran tourismo 3/4
X-men legends 1 and 2. These games are Diablo style RPG's. They are also multiplayer (at the same time). They might be a bit advanced for an 8 yearold but you could help him.
For you;
Onimusha 1, 2, 3. These are done in the Resident evil style but you play a smaruai in the Sengoku jidai era, and in the thrid one as a french cop (played by Jean Reno) from our era. Plus in the first 2 a dead Oda Nobunaga is the villian. :2thumbsup:
Silent Hill 2, this is a survival horror game that is actually creepy and disturbing.
Splinter Cell 1-3. But only if you've never played them on the PC.

Lol the whole series is a rip off.
Luigi> Coco
Mario Kart> Crash Team Racing
Mario Party> Crash Bash
Etc etc.

i've been going through a ps2 re-obsession lately. i can't really offer much in the way of kid's recommendations, but for adults... i'd say you'd be pretty pleased with any of the following:
god of war - action/puzzle game set amongst ancient greek mythology. not for the faint of heart, however. it's fairly violent, but features an off-the-chart production value that makes it feel more like a grand action movie than a game.
shadow of the colossus - another platforming/action game that's just as worth playing for it's art direction as it is for its excellent gameplay. also features a damn moving ending.
ace combat 5 - a somewhat realistic action flight game with a great story and score. nothing like taking to the skies in a f16c, flipping on cockpit view, ordering your wingmen to attack, and fighting for the motherland. good stuff. as a bonus, this game can be picked up for 19.99 nowadays.
resident evil 4 - stay with me on this one. the first 3 resident evils are pretty terrible in my opinion, but this one is completely different. there's great strategy to purchasing and modifying your weapons, knowing when to use what, and the controls and camera control are much improved from previous iterations. it also goes with a much better thriller type plot, and not so much OMG ZOMBIES as the previous games.
So many good games, most of the titles mentioned may be a bit on the violent side though. You cannot go wrong with final fantasy X, that game lasts forever and has a very good story. I heard some great things about Guitar Hero, but haven't found a copy yet myselve
I just posted about this. But Dragon Quest 8 is a really great and family friendly game. (no blood, cartoonish style violence)
The enemies are actually quite hilarious. There's a cat enemy that sometimes purrs and licks itself instead of taking a turn. And an enemy called "kalamari kid" that will run off from the battle when its mother calls. :)
Edit: the only problem is, age 8 might be pushing it, since this IS an rpg -- and a difficult one, at least by modern rpg standards. Still, anyone can get through the game by leveling enough.

Thanks for all the advice. The hit game in our household during the first 24 hours of having the PS2 is definately Lego Star Wars - definately a nice title.
The 1 thing I haven't sorted out is a memory card - I haven't got him 1 yet - is it worth getting 1 of these higher memory ones or will a normal 8 meq one do for normal gave saving etc?
That dpends on the game. Most game saves are only a few hundred KB's. But if you have many games and you keep all the saves then it adds up. Get and 8 meg one now and if you need a larger one later get it.
Get him Star Wars Battlegrounds 2. Endless hours of fun for two kids.
Ideally get it on Xbox though, looks much better.

I usually don't cut corners with memory cards. I'd rather buy a single mega-card (which is usually still cheap from third-party companies) and keep care of it.

I bought a PS2 about a year ago during a period when I was disinterested in anything available for the PC.
Since the PS 2 had been out for a couple of years there were and still are a ton of games that can be purchased as pre-owned or as classic re-issues for $10 to $20.
I only bought and played about 6 or 7 games before I migrated back to the PC, but of those my favorites are Jak 2 and 3 plus Ratchet & Clank--Going Commando.
JaK 2 is like a bunch of games in one. First it is a fun 3rd person shooter (your victims are evil Orcs and other fantasy creatures), next the city that you spend most of the game exploring is much like the interactive environment of a GTA type city, then there are of course platform jumping sections and puzzles to solve, and finally you compete and have to win several land speeder races to progress. The platform jumping is my least favorite part of the games, but it is not too bad. Lastly, there is lot's of humor in the game provided by your companion--a little weasel like character named Dexter.
Jak 3 is more of the same, except this time you get out into the desert and get to drive dune buggies much like kind in the Road Warrior movies.
The Ratchet & Clank games are very similar, and also full of silly humor that both children and adults can enjoy. You get to travel between planets in a rocket ship to attempt missions. There are lots of fun weapons to collect and of course the mandatory platform jumping in such games.
Other than those, I bought Burnout 3, Mercenaries, and Red Dead revolver, but I have only fooled with the "crash and destroy all the vehicles you can for a point score" section of Burnout 3. I'll get back to them eventually.
Anyhow, I think any of the JAK & Dexter or the Ratchet & Clank games will give hours of fun and are suitable for just about any age from 8 up to 60.
At least I enjoyed them and I just turned 60.
Cheers

Thanks for all the advice - we are a week in now and i can't get him off it!! Lego Star Wars has been a great hit and I would heartedly recomend it - can't wait for LSW 2!! As for a memory card, i got a 64 meg one - a bit more expensive, but worth it for all the extra space.:2thumbsup:
I'd suggest any of the Dynasty Warriors series, sure its hacking people to death but there is no gore etc. so it should be suitable. It's 2 player also.
Here's a link anyway: http://www.koei.co.uk/

If you want a nice wholesome Yet Quite Thrilling game Suitable for slightly older children.. 7yrs+
Kindom hearts Seems to be a winner.
(my daughter loves it) Its a Rpg based around some disney charicters. with Real time combat.
but its far from being a silly childrens game.
And i personally play it my self.
Then theres dark cloud. is Another RPG, little scary But its Child freindly.
and its sequel Dark chronicle.. a nother Rpg.
(if you ask me the dark cloud is the best game)
"yeah i like rpg's"
Tony hawk's proskater Is a good game..
but dont buy anything Prior to Tony hawks pro skater 4.
Honestly though... I have way to many ps2 games to start trying to think which ones i like the most.
But i will say.
I love the resident evil serieze. (NOT FOR KIDS)
And if you like the old Mortal kombat games.
I was recently playing a New 3d version that reminded me slightly of tekken,
But with MK charickters. It ran like a dream and looked Nice, whilst still allowing me to pull off al the old mooves from the origional MK (NOT FOR KIDS)
For driving games...
You cant really beat TOCA touring car championship 2 for the play station 1. IMHO it is the most acurate car Racing sim i have ever played. The car handeling physics OWN.(child freindly)
ps1 games will run on play station2.
if your just looking for a bit of a time waster...
Try Theme hospital.
Also for the play sation 1. (child freindly)
"i will admit i have theme hospital on my Pc and on the playstation. But i only play on the PC (mouse is good)"
And if you like little blue hedge hogs..
