View Full Version : Faith in human nature at last

I got this from a freind of mine in Canada.
While it may not have been noticed in the UK it was big news over here. In the women's team sprint (x-country skiing - two women doing alternate laps for six laps) the Canadian was leading on the third lap when she broke her pole. Slowing dramatically she was overtaken by Norway, Sweden and Finland before a coach on the sidelines gave her a pole. It was a man's pole - six inches too long (yes, I know Bruce) but it allowed her to stay in fourth place some way back. Over the next two laps - expending too much energy - the girls caught the lead group. In the final sprint the Canadian didn't have enough left and slipped to second - Sweden taking the gold and Finland the bronze - Norway ended up fourth. So what? Well, the coach who gave over his pole was the Norwegian coach - he said afterwards "That's what we do in our sport". So perhaps the Olympic spirit isn't quite dead.
Things like this restore my faith in human nature (at least the good bits)
Any other examples out there?

That's good sportsmanship at it's best :2thumbsup:
Haven`t heard anything about it. :book:
That said, I haven`t watched too much sport, and it was sort of a natural reaction wasn`t it? I`m afraid I`d done the same..

By the olympic spirit, I assume you mean the one that was invented in the 1800s. The greeks would break each other's fingers whilst wrestling to get ahead. To them winning was pretty much all that matters. If they'd had the drugs, they'd probably have been in favour of taking them!

stuff like this happens all the time. a couple of days ago, when the defending olympic champ fell in a pile-up at the start of the men's x-country event, he was like 30 secs behind because his coaches had to come out and put his skis back on. the rest of the pack slowed down so he could catch up. he won the silver.

If I was that coach, I would've stuck that pole in her kneecap ...

That explains the declining birth rates in France.

Nah, the Norwegian coach happened to see the drug testing van coming round the bend. Knowing his girl would be in trouble if she made the podium, he quickly handed the pole to the Canadian. That, gentlemen, is the true Olympic spirit.
Happens all the time.. :juggle2:

Inches, damn I thought we were using the metric system... 6cms is average, and 8 cms is enourmous in Australia. :juggle2: :laugh4:

I am sure your whiff is quite pleased Pape, given the stereotype of males in that ethnic category.
:focus:
It is nice to see this type of competitive sportsmanship. I wonder if the extra length was cumbersome or facilitating?
