Anger at new Iraq abuse photos (http://www.news.com.au/story/0,10117,18165354-2,00.html)

THE United Nations has described as "deeply disturbing" images aired on Australian television last night of prisoners being abused by US soldiers in Iraq.

The US Government has confirmed the authenticity of the pictures, shown on SBS's Dateline last night, and said the pictures could endanger its troops in Iraq and inflame current tensions between the Islamic world and the West.

More grist for the mill.

Amazing, how someone who calls himself a Christian can be so.. tasteless.
Amazing how someone who doesn't believe in Christ can judge me by Jesus' standards and someone that calls himself a socialist its funny to see you wasting your time instead of "progressing society" posting messages on a gameing site with a computer bought with money that could have been used by the less privilaged. :laugh4:
Yaaawn. This is just more of the same from the same incident. There's nothing new here and so I'm just making light of old news. To be honest, instead of humiliating these people we should have beheaded them with a dull knife so we can communicate better with the people of this region since this is really all they understand. Maybe if we act more like the terrorist the liberals around the world would instead of hating us they'll try to "understand" us and be more "compassionate" to our causes. After all, it makes more sense to be outraged at butt pyramids and dogs barking at people than beheadings and stonings.
So I'm rubbing one off on these great new pictures while wearing my Gimp suit from Pulp Fiction and being flogged by wet pasta noodles while a midget pinches a loaf on my chest. Please post some more of these great pics before my tobasco sauce enama is in.

That's something you see and learn from Hollywood, the guys out there where you invaded (whoever they are, rightful or criminal, civil or terrorist) know how to fight and survive. It is the way of life in Middle East. Duke Nukem is not real, wake up Johnny.

I'd advise you keep off such Behind-The-Keyboard actions -ironically the same thing you accuse AdrianII to be doing.

For the record, disgusting but not surprising. After all I've seen here lately, this is their sense of fun indeed.

Even the Dutch midget army has excesses like these. And the bigger the country and its army, and the more frustrating its foreign or domestic tasks, the more opportunities there are for bastards like these to do their thing. You must admit that the Turkish army for instance is not exactly a nunnery either.

What these pictures show is the impotence and frustration of the whole operation in Iraq. It is the face of a great nation, led into a useless campaign by the lousiest leadership we have seen in many years.

Actually the program brought new light to the paucity of charges laid out so far.

It seems that quite a bit more has been discretely handled.

In February 2006, previously unreleased photos and videos were distributed by SBS, an Australian broadcaster. According to initial reports, the Bush administration is attempting to prevent release of the images in the US, arguing that their publication could provoke antagonism towards them. According to BBC World News, the photographs were probably taken around the same time as the previously released photographs, and include some of the same prisoners and convicted soldiers from the earlier images. These newly-released photographs depict prisoners crawling on the floor naked, being forced to perform sexual acts, and being covered in feces. Some images also show homicide and corpses, some shot in the head and some with slit throats. BBC World News stated that one of the prisoners, who was reportedly mentally unstable, was considered by prison guards as a 'pet' for torture.

So they also murdered prisoners and commited far worse torture then previously revealed. This ain't old news, this is the tip of an iceberg of discretions.

Can you assure that, hipotetically of course, with another administration this would have ended otherwise? I think that the ideal confidence in the greatness of a nation, reverent of the past, has no substance in today's world, in today's reality. I personally believe that this would have ended aproximately the same way.

Putting warfare that includes torture for information aside (I accept it may/may have happened,it is everywhere), Turkish army (nor Dutch army, I think) was never exposed of actions towards "creative (!) humiliation" of those being "treated". I wonder who leaked these.

Sorry, but there really is nothing new here. It was widely known to anyone following the story that what went on was more than leashes and the naked dogpiles that were typically shown. Other photos, including those showing dead prisoners were available in 2004 and reported on by the NYT. Why are we dragging this out again?

http://www.veteransforpeace.org/Photos_of_dead_040704.htm- this references some of the reporting from the NYT (warning: shows dead body) and is dated May 7 2004.

Personally, I think the reason these are again being circulated in the Arab world is to capitalize on the current protests and outrage over the comics. Lord knows some of those behind this have been trying to find a way to direct their anger at the US. No doubt they're hoping this will be the catalyst.

Oh right, so we can beat up on the US some more over 2 year old news.I wouldn't beat up on a nation where civil rights groups request such pictures from their government under an act (FOIA) that is practically unique among democracies, and obtain them as well in a gesture of fairness and transparency that is equally commendable. I just piss on leaders who mislead and humiliate their own nation in such a fashion.

2 years later... well only those whose photos have been made public have been given slaps on the wrists.

Same illness as with the brits. Only photos that have been publically released have had much action done.

Australia was where these photos were published last night. It is not part of Arabia. We do however have a train called the Ghan which is short for Afghanistan, and we do export camels to the middle east.

The hope is that justice might actually be done rather then a systematic white wash.

So can you show me where the truth and justice is with these cases?

Similar logic to what French and Norwegian papers did after the notorious charicatures published in Danish paper.

Similar logic to what French and Norwegian papers did after the notorious charicatures published in Danish paper.I suppose you could try to draw that relationship, but I'm not really interested in discussing it- my only point was that there is clearly alot of anger in the Muslim world, mainly directed at these comics. I think it's very likely that some of those who are fanning the flames of violence would like nothing better than to direct a healthy portion of this anger towards the US, even though we had nothing to do with the comics. I think stories like this can be used as a tool to do it, even though it's old news it's being presented as new revelations.

Maybe not, it's just my hunch- make of it what you will.

Well, I did not know that and I consider myself not particularly uninformed about to current events. Maybe cynics on both sides suspected as much, but I am not sure how it could be "widely known" if it was not reported on international media like the BBC.

For instance, did US soldiers actually murder people in Abu Ghraib as Pape is suggesting? Did they keep one mentally ill person as a pet to torture? Either would be news to me.

My lenient attitude to the sentencing of Lindi England et al was very much conditioned by the photos that were released. If there was much worse stuff going on, I'd have to agree with Prole and want the book thrown at the perpetrators.

Dave you have repeatedly made sexual references to these photos , and you have made suggestions that journalists are getting sexual gratification out of them .
Yet it was servicemen that were taking and circulating the photos , and Grainger managed to get so turned on that he ended up humping that pug ugly inbred shortarse Lindsey .
So was it journalists or some sick servicemen who were getting their kicks from this ?
You will of course recall that this came to light because servicemen had these pictures installed as screensavers on their computers .
They must have really loved the action to be wanting to look at it all the time .

Yes, I knew that at the time. But somehow saying someone did unspecified "disturbing" things is less damning that actually detailing them. I don't really care about releasing photos per se - who wants to look at stuff like that? - but did the Administration release details at the time - or during the court cases - of exactly what went on? Or is there new information coming out now with the pictures?

Some of what Pape's alleging is not just "more disturbing" than human pyramids, it's reaching the bounds of inhumanity.

Well one of the Rape allegations involves a "civilian" contractor , since they have imunity from Iraqi law and do not come under the Military justice sytem then nithing at all can be done , apart from sacking them , as for the alledged killings , one case has been heard and it was ruled as negligent homicide not murder .
