Did not see a post on this. A really great game, in my opinion. Certainly better than any console rpg in the past couple years. Probably better than any pc rpg (if only because there have been so few).

The game supposedly has a lot of charm -- it's designed by the guy who created dragonball z -- but I haven't noticed that much.

What i like is the gameplay and (turn-based) battles. It starts off slow, largely because you have no skills, but in the late game there are some very interesting and challenging battles. and it actually matters a huge amount: a) how you fight your battles (when do you heal? with what characters? what buffs to use? etc); b) how you build your characters. There's also the typical horde of loot, monsters, etc. Though the sidegames are disappointing. Most involve random chance.

I don't mind that much, though. The only thing I enjoyed about FF X was blitzball. But I'll take a great primary game over a great sidegame any day. :)

Anyway, just wanted to give a heads up to any rpg fans who have missed out on this. It really is quite a gem.

I've considered getting a PS2 just so I could play some jRPGs again, but besides this and Final Fantasy X, there don't seem to that many decent ones.

FFX isn't a decent RPG. It's probably the crappiest Final Fantasy I ever played, and one of the crappiest RPG altogether. Save yourself 30 euros and play FFVI, VII or IX.

Well, i've heard good things about star ocean and shadow hearts. have not played either of them.

Get a ps2 for dq8 and ffx? I would agree with the above poster in that ffx really isn't that fun. it's mindlessly easy, and there's virtually zero strategy required in battles. (other than blitzball... I must have spent 2x as much time on blitzball as I did on the main game)

So i'd probably suggest that you just borrow a PS2 from someone you know, or rent it out from somewhere. Video stores unfortunately have stopped renting ps2s out, but if you have a local rent-a-center, they usually have them (though they may not come with a memory card... you can always buy one from a local best buy then return it for store credit :P)

then again, dragon quest 8 is a very good game. God of war is pretty decent as well. I think a ps2 might be worth it for those 2 games alone -- especially if they drop the price on it sometime soon.
