Go to \Rome - Total War\bi\data\world\maps\campaign\barbarian_invasion, open descr_strat.txt, and do the self-evident cut-paste. Presto. :balloon2:

Just wondering....Why do they put nonplayable factions? All the factions are fun, so why do they take away half of them?

I have asked this SO many times over the past couple years and never gotten a response. I just felt like posting this to let you know that your question is definitely one that many many people have asked before you.

Heh, your point of: they're all fun, why take half away?" is, although very simple, exactly the point that needs to be made. What is GAINED by CA including locked factions? If they can't answer that question directly, then there is no reason. End of story.

You'll probably nolticed starting faction s have larger tech trees and have goodies such as long battle speeches, fixing this would make for alot more work for CA . Also some factinos 'should be there' for some sort of historical accuracy but because the way the game works (AI etc) they get slaughtered all the time or cant grown, notice Celts hardly ever take multiple provinces.

Is it like that you mean? i tried it but i could only play those 10 normal factions anyway. You'd prolly have to leave the Romano-Brits and Ostrogoths under "unplayable". I'm not sure about it, but "emergent" factions might screw things up a little.

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention (it's so routine for me I tend to take it entirely for granted): you also need to delete the map.rwm file from \Rome - Total War\bi\data\world\maps\base. That thing gets auto-generated at some point of the start-up process apparently partly from the strat.txt, and changes made therein won't apply if the pre-edit one is still in use.

Or, well, that's how it went in RTW. I haven't heard of BI being different and can see no reason why it would either, but then neither have I tested.

That's weird, it worked just fine when I tried it.

Checklist:
1 - delete map.rwm from \Rome - Total War\bi\data\world\maps\base
2 - cut-paste the factions you want under "playable" in descr_strat text in \Rome - Total War\bi\data\world\maps\campaign\barbarian_invasion; I'd leave
romano_british
ostrogoths
slavs
empire_east_rebels
empire_west_rebels
slave
under "unplayable" if I were you.

That worked for me, anyway. The Celts, Berbers et all were neatly in the faction selection screen and a short practical test proved the Berbers worked just fine in-game.

I was trying it on my friends game today, it worked, all those factions could be chosen, but could only play the celts, the other made the game to CTD.

maybe it dont work on my comp cause i first got the cut-paste info then the delete info, but i dont see why it wouldnt work by doing in that way first.

i will reinstall the game and try it again on my own comp.

thanks again

Playing celts is so god damn fun. Just build hounds of culann in every province, place them in one big mass, then have them all berserk simultaneously when an enemy comes near. It's hilarious. (and, amazingly, quite effective too!)

i was told to update the game to 1.6 so i could play other nonplayeble factions then celts and berbers, after updating the game, i couldnt find the files that i should alter, not any files at all, so i copied the old ones that i had before i patched the game, but it didnt work.

do anyoen know what i can do, or do i have to reinstall whole game?

It surprises me that the celts are not one of the playable factions of the game considering how many unique units they have and their interesting role in history. I would have choosen them as a playable faction over the samerians at any pace.

Good point, I have also often wondered how CA distinguished the playable from the nonplayable factions (the Celts and Berbers at least should have been playable IMO) All of the other non-playables are essentially just clones of a playable faction, but these two are unique in their unit composition. The Berbers even have a unique building tree.

CA probably thought they would be too difficult to win with, perhaps.

A mod for making all factions playable (inculding emergent factions *as* they emerge in-game) can be found at http://www.twcenter.net/forums/showthread.php?t=38966 it works fine for me and makes the emergent factions really fun to play with.
