Needless to say Im a Chevy man all the way.

I just cant watch this race without thinking of the grestest NASCAR driver ever who was killed here in the race he loved.

RIP Dale Sr.

I personally don't understand Daytona. I mean it's bunch of cars doing an eliptical circuit until they reach 500 miles, not as much thinking and skill as any Formula for example. Well...I suppose the funs is on the speed or in the crashes.

No the fun is in the closeness of the competiton. Unlike F-1 you never know who will win. There is constant passing and repassing. They also run these big babies on a few road courses each year. Dont get me wrong . Im strictly a sports car racer. But nothing beats Nascar for fierce competition and close racing. F-1 is a technogical parade in comparison. Though I dearly love F-1 . The cars themselves are a wonder to behold.

Thanks Gawain, you've clarified some points, I never knew it was from the closeness for example, but the crashes should play a roll too right?

I vote for Jimmy Johnson.

Of course the race is over and I know the results.

Johnson is from my local racetrack. He grew up El Cajon, my neighbor to the east. Strange to see him win this famous race.

Yup, El Cajon Speedway has gone the way of the dinosaur and the drive-in movie.

From a couple years ago in its heyday:

and a sad pic from last August (when the lease expired after 44 years & reverted to the county):

local race fans will have to travel north to get their fix now, or just watch TV. :(
