View Full Version : Do we take ourselves too seriously in these forums?

I'm guilty of it. I believe that our community is better informed about world events and politics than the average citizen, regardless of which country we reside. But at the same time, do we take ourselves too seriously? Things get heated and sometimes nasty and sometimes our communications are hampered by simple language barriers and the fact that we can't really type the true meaning or feelings we have about a certain topic. But are we way too serious in here?

Who the hell do you think you are!?!?! WTF are you trying to say!?!? I'm right, and if you disagree with me, you must be the dumbest person on the planet? :furious3: :furious3: :furious3:
Is that what you're referring to? Yeah, I think we all suffer from it from time to time. A little more satire, a little less vitriol would work wonders around these parts. A 'confession thread' where we each publicly admitted a time we later realized we were flat ass wrong wouldn't hurt either. Kudos to those that have taken it upon themselves to admit to it in recent threads (I'm thinking of Lemur & Prole specifically).

I don't. So, just to prove it, a joke.
A man had two great tickets for the Football Association Cup final.
As he sits down, another man comes down and asks if anyone is sitting in the seat next to him.
"No", he says, "the seat is empty".
"This is incredible!" said the man, "who in their right mind would have a seat like this for the FA cup final, the biggest sporting event in the year, and not use it?"
First man says, "well, actually, the seat belongs to me. My wife was supposed to come with me, but she passed away. This is the first Cup Final we haven't been together since we got married".
"Oh ... I'm sorry to hear that. That's terrible. I guess you couldn't find someone else, a friend or relative or even a neighbour to take the seat?"
The man shakes his head... "No. They're all at the funeral"

I think a confession thread would be a good idea- oh, and Don, since when have you been a senior member?
Since I hacked into the member database & changed my status. That's my confession.
To get somewhat back on topic, I don't think anybody takes themselves too seriously, not to the extent that it's a problem with the whole Backroom. Rather, I think people misunderstand each other. Attempts and humor and sarcasm are the usual suspects. People misread them.
Here's a pretty good study on the subject: (http://www.wired.com/news/technology/0,70179-0.html?tw=wn_index_2)
According to recent research published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, I've only a 50-50 chance of ascertaining the tone of any e-mail message. The study also shows that people think they've correctly interpreted the tone of e-mails they receive 90 percent of the time.
"That's how flame wars get started," says psychologist Nicholas Epley of the University of Chicago, who conducted the research with Justin Kruger of New York University. "People in our study were convinced they've accurately understood the tone of an e-mail message when in fact their odds are no better than chance," says Epley.
The researchers took 30 pairs of undergraduate students and gave each one a list of 20 statements about topics like campus food or the weather. Assuming either a serious or sarcastic tone, one member of each pair e-mailed the statements to his or her partner. The partners then guessed the intended tone and indicated how confident they were in their answers.
Those who sent the messages predicted that nearly 80 percent of the time their partners would correctly interpret the tone. In fact the recipients got it right just over 50 percent of the time.

I do, i am generally surrounded by idiots (being in high school) who have no idea what i'm talking about half the time so its always like "uh, next to use smaller words" or "what does that mean" or "lets just nuke the middle east." so its really quite depressing, so i come onto the forums and attempt to sound smart and intellectual but many a time i am proved wrong by someone older and smarter, then i feel shame but then i bounce back with some stupid remark and get back into the conversation. plus i'm learning lots of crap about polotics via the backroom and am so interested that next year i'm going to take "contemparary world problems" its an AP class and supposedly a bitch to take(:juggle2:) but i'm up for it.

I think it's true. I'd say that 95% of arguments are misunderstandings, and 5% are real, deep-seated disagreements. (And int truth, disagreements can be settled without rancor, so 100% of flame wars are misunderstandings.)
Senior Patron has nothing to do with post count or age, or at least that's how I understand it. It's all about contribution to the Org, in whatever form that contribution takes.

As a medic, in my job I've got to be nice to people I'd shoot without a second's thought - the rude, violent, frequent attenders.
Here I can be me, or at least a super condensed version of me with all the stops out, no holds barred.
In a way things are more intense here as one's age, background etc etc are stripped away and there is nothing but our ideas: it's not the way we look, our accent etc etc that we can say was the reason for the problem, it was purely the argument that we advocated.
And here given the audience we generally do feel a greater impetus to get "learned" people to agree with us, as opposed to the cattle god in his Divine wisdom has populated our more immediate surroundings.

Sadly, I am unable to view your site from work Don. Maybe when I get home I'll check it out. Why am I a "Centurion"?
As to the topic, this has gotta be a joke. Look, as BP's sig succinctly puts it, this is a "cult gaming site".
How true it is. If we thought we were hard core, we would be hittin up freerepublic and all these other political/religio/quasi-scientifico sites and lure one another to forums there. Even worse, we would form our own mini forums or something like that.
Sure, I have an opinion just like everyone else. But look at my damn sig. I've gone from OrgWars to Gerbils to the world's ugliest dog. I regularly post retarded childish wannabe photoshop paint drawings like I'm in friggin 3rd grade again.
Too seriously? No way.
What this board has is passion. And that is a good thing.

I was given 2 warning points for the use of the word trogladyte. in Jest, (31 days no edit key)
"MAJOR WARNING"
(was in the back room as well So absolutley the same situation)
This as usual is a 2 toned system of warning.
That is Very retarded.
And the usual cause of trouble that comes from me.
You guys need to fix your rule books.
And either punish him for using the word.
Or appologize for punishing me unjustly.
"I know neither will happen, and thats the problem with this forum"
And if you say. No 1 complained...
No 1 complained about my use of the word, Yet i was punished.
So I am Complaining about others use of the word, and the blatant 2 toned warning system that Ruins the org.
Either the following IS not allowed and = MAJOR WARNING 2 Points,
Or i deserve an appology.
Simple as that.

This means I complain and you get agrivated.
Unfortunatly for you, It will just continue indefinatly.
and I will keep Pointing these things out till Theres no longer a 2 toned warning system.
Theres Nothing to do but fix the retareded warning system. And stop being biast towards certain people giving them unfair favoritism.
And no warning's for the same things other people would get warned for.

I always thought the moderators were doing a good job, but now that Ser Clegane has given me no less then two warnings last week I realise what a horrible person he really is

I've given out so many warnings in the last few weeks (in the M2TW forum) that it has made me take it all less seriously than before. It's like a traffic warden giving out parking penalties. I'm sure it is terribly annoying to be on the receiving end, but it should still be kept in proportion. You use offensive language, flame someone, bash CA etc, you get a warning. Just to keep everything on the up-and-up:
Shambles received a 2-point warning for this post
https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showthread.php?p=1030198
in the Watchtower, not the Tavern Backroom. Warning points issued by TosaInu, the sole Moderator there.
Goofball used the term: "Troglodite", definition (from dictionary.com):
troglodyte \TROG-luh-dyt\, noun:
1. A member of a primitive people that lived in caves, dens, or holes; a cave dweller.
2. One who is regarded as reclusive, reactionary, out of date, or brutish.
When the survivalists emerged blinking into the sunlight to restock their caves after the terror, my first reaction was to say, "Bless their dotty, troglodyte hearts."
-- Judy Mann, "Survivalists Flee Reality to Live in Fear," Washington Post, October 5, 2001
. . .an admitted electronics-averse troglodyte like myself, who writes with a fountain pen, shaves with a mug and brush, grinds his own coffee and spends summers in a Maine fishing town where the nearest latte is 45 minutes away.
-- Frank Van Riper, "Another Door Opens," Washington Post, May 5, 2000
For the first time, opening a fashion magazine didn't make me feel like a cloddish troglodyte who needed fixing.
-- Janelle Brown, "Keeping it real," Salon, June 4, 2001
By contrast, Shambles used the term "Trogladite Trolls" (notice the A), not found in standard english dictionaries, but has an entry in
http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=trogladites&defid=1401101 an 'urban dictionary' of slang. Click the link to see the much more insulting definition.

I understand the problems you are having in the MTW2 forum completely. The first thing could be that there are lots of new people coming in that forum that are not used to the posting culture of the Org.The second thing i have been sensing lately is that there are already an bitter fight between modder teams to recruit people for the MTW2 mods becouse it seems that pulling of a big mod for it will take lot more modders to achieve. And becouse of that the general forum for MTW2 is hurting of the outrbursts that result from that.Maybe one cure could be to start a independent forum for MTW2 modding?~:)

Every 1 involved was informed that I did not mean Any SLANG meanings of the word and i Then went around pm'ing the real meaning.
A simple miss spelt word Even in OBVIOUS context = 2 points it seems.
As i said.. Retarded and hypocrytical rule books.
The meanings were OBVIOUS if you know what the words mean even with incorrect spelling.
Becous..
a Trogladite. =
"1. A member of a primitive people that lived in caves, dens, or holes; a cave dweller."
And then a Troll. is..
"A supernatural creature of Scandinavian folklore, variously portrayed as a friendly or mischievous dwarf or as a giant, that lives in caves, in the hills, or under bridges."
See how they co-incide?...
and there for the origional meaning is abundantly clear even with typing errors.
(provided you understand english and its various usage of words for multiple meanings)
Simple.
any way thats not really relivant.
the point i was trying to get across is the hypocrytical way in which warnings are given.
IMO It needs to be addressed.

So, your allegation, above:
same situation,
same place,
Same word,
In same Context.
Is not entirely correct?
It was not the
same situation
same place (Watchtower, not Backroom)
same word (different spelling, different definition)
or same context
Since this thread now has very little to do with backroom business, and is about your allegations of personal persecution, staff hypocrisy and double-standards (which I assume you mean by 2-toned), I recommend this thread be moved to the Watchtower.

And leave this thread alone.
And i will make a new one in the watch tower?
(if i feel the need to futher express my oppinion on the matter)
But to futher address the above post..
I will add
Indeed it would seem my alligation Is not entierly correct.
However it was the BACKROOM section of the watch tower,
The word had the same definition. Its just i spell it diferently.
(i even pm'd every 1 involved with the real definition of the word and not some slang meaning, some kid on the internet posted on his web page)
and the context was indeed the same,
(the context was In jest)
so my aligations arent 100% correct.
(becous it was the Backroom in the watchtower and not the actual backroom. and becous i SLIGHTLY misspelt an Obvious word)
but although my aligations arent 100% correct. they are Far from being unfounded.
(this post could also be deleted as not to take this topic to far off course)

//throws stick
look it's an discussion, fetch!
hmmm doesn't work.
That would be A discussion.
"an" comes before a vowel "a" comes before a constenant,
with exeptions of predomenant vowel sounds in words staring with a constenant.
so that would be.
An eliphant.
A dog
An Invention.
a carpenter.
And then an exeption.
An Hotel.
As the O is elongated in that word and there for the vowel is the predomenant letter (sound) in the word.
hence the usage of An.
"discussion puts no more emphasis on the I than it does the D, so a vowel is not the predomenant sound in the word there fore 'A disscussion' would be the correct usage."
(see i can be pedantic and annoying about grammer if i like 2)

Back on topic.
It looks as though some posters do indeed take themselves seriously. They stick out like a thumb that's been bashed by a 15Ib lump hammer.
Remember kids, it's a game forum. A game that, I presume, we like because we find it fun.
WARNING this joke contains a naughty word.
Two builders (Phil and Eric) are seated either side of a table in a rough pub when a well-dressed man enters, orders a beer and sits on a stool at the bar.
The two builders start to speculate about the occupation of the suit.
Phil: - I reckon he's an accountant.
Eric: - No way - he's a stockbroker.
Phil: - He ain't no stockbroker! A stockbroker wouldn't come in here!
The argument repeats itself for some time until the volume of beer gets the better of Phil and he makes for the toilet. On entering the toilet he sees that the suit is standing at a urinal.
Curiosity and the several beers get the better of the builder.
Phil: - 'Scuse me.. no offence meant, but me and me mate were wondering what you do for a living?
Suit: - No offence taken! I'm a Logical Scientist by profession.
Phil: - Oh! What's that then?
Suit: - I'll try to explain by example... Do you have a goldfish at home?
Phil: - Er... mmm . well yeah, I do as it happens!
Suit: - Well, it's logical to follow that you keep it in a bowl or in a pond. Which is it?
Phil: - It's in a pond!
Suit: - Well then it's reasonable to suppose that you have a large garden then?
Phil: - As it happens, yes I have got a big garden!
Suit: - Well then it's logical to assume that in this town if you have a large garden then you have a large house?
Phil: - As it happens I've got a five-bedroom house...built it myself!
Suit: - Well given that you've built a five-bedroom house it is logical to assume that you haven't built it just for yourself and that you are quite probably married?
Phil: - Yes I am married, I live with my wife and three children.
Suit: - Well then it is logical to assume that you are sexually active with your wife on a regular basis?
Phil:- Yep! Four nights a week!
Suit: - Well then it is logical to suggest that you do not masturbate very often?
Phil: - Me? Never.
Suit: - Well there you are! That's logical science at work!
Phil: - How's that then?
Suit: - Well from finding out that you had a goldfish, I've told you about your sex life!
Phil: - I see! That's pretty impressive...thanks mate!
Both leave the toilet and Phil returns to his mate.
Eric: - I see the suit was in there. Did you ask him what he does?
Phil: - Yep! He's a logical scientist!
Eric: - What's that then?
Phil: - I'll try and explain. Do you have a goldfish?
Eric: - Nope.
Phil: - Well then, you're a wanker.
 :laugh4:

I am much better in Dutch. But you don't seem to be such a purist when it comes to grammar yourselve.
But why waste time on grammar when disagreeing for the sake of disagreeing is so much more satisfying? I could make some radical points, and you could be all over them? We have a date?

:) Great!
You can make your points in dutch.
I can reply in welsh.
and we can get absolutley no where !!!
lol. :)
Psst..
Im sure we can find something some where we disagree on and there for will undoubtedly be locked in a pointless debate some time in the future.
"there the best kind"
And no i dont care about grammer lol.
I understand what you said just fine I was just being pedantic for a change.
p.s
No offence intended by the "An. A" remark.
So i hope none was taken.
but maby it was a helpfull remark any way.
Lots of Silly rules like that in english.
(most people just tell others your grammer sux and dont intend to point out what they believe is wrong.
Thought id point it out and explain why)
"from lesson number 2, in ShambleS's how to take your self altogether to seriously on forums"

Just a girl, not excusing the issueing of warnings to name calling, Goofy and I go way back and calling me a Trogladite is a rather pleasant label compared to the usual complimentary terms we have for each other. I love Goofy and he's free to call me whatever he wants. If he insults me, I'll PM him and he'll edit his post. We've done it before for each other. Its growing pains, don't worry about the warnings, they are a good thing because they give you leverage on what and what not to say. PM the mods and discuss it in private and you'll accomplish more than airing out your dirty laundry, believ me I know!!!
Just A Girl, please don't feel I'm lecturing to you, but don't take things so seriously. If you get upset over getting warnings about calling someone a "Trogladite" then you are going to have a rough ride here. Don't think I'm being a hypocrite when I say this because I get pissed over the littlest thing in these forums and say things I shouldn't. You can ask any mod around here who's been the biggest pain in their ass over the past 5 years and I'm sure they'd agree that I'm one of the top on the list. Please don't follow my path or others. Try to get along with folks and use your intelligence and not your anger to control your posts. Its good to have these converstions when you feel you've been wronged. But believe me, these guys, even though I've have MANY runins with them, from Tosa down, do a good job and do everything they can to be fair.
Sorry, you've had a bad experience, but don't let it ruin your time here. Take care and feel free to tell me off if you think I'm off my rocker with y comments, but please understand I'm only saying what I'm saying to you because I can tell from your posts that you have a lot to offer and I would be very disappointed if you went the path that some of us has taken and become a unwelcomed force within.
Take care and have fun.

why was this thread moved from the BR to the WBR?
Probably because Just a Girl began to whine about being treated unfairly by the moderators.

Since he's changed the avatar from 'princess' to one more masculine, I'd guess the transition is almost complete. 'Trish' has apparently faded away, one more collateral-damage victim of unfortunate and unnecessary org-wars.:shame:

(.) I like the place But disslike the hypocrytical way in which it is run, and i believe it would be best if (..) 1 set of firm rules were placed. For Pete's sake, it's a gaming forum and moderators are only human. They work with a thing called [i]headspace[/í] -- how's that for a Dutchman? They issue warnings if and when they feel you are upsetting the balance of discussions, not because of the occurrence of a word or a turn of phrase.
Goofball is known here as both a jester and a gentleman, hence he is given more latitude than trolls, pornographers and four letter artists.

Awfly rude of me not to acknowlage you Reenk Roink.
Trish made this account at roughly the same time as i made ShambleS
before ShambleS was taken from us "RIP"
I had made 975 or so posts.
In the same time frame trish made 5.
and those were to congratulate people on their wins in my tourniment.
Trish was here becous I was here.
and she wished to show support for my venture.
So Trish still uses this account Just as often as she used to.

Just for the record though...
Since this thread now has very little to do with backroom business, and is about your allegations of personal persecution, staff hypocrisy and double-standards (which I assume you mean by 2-toned), I recommend this thread be moved to the Watchtower.
can i recomend some 1 deletes my previous posts.
And leave this thread alone.
And i will make a new one in the watch tower?
(if i feel the need to futher express my oppinion on the matter)
(this post could also be deleted as not to take this topic to far off course)
P.s
Who said anything about me being persicuted?

Damn it.
Im so lost without edit key its not funny.
Im going to resist hitting alt s 1st thing i finish typing this time..
--------------
I would just like to point out.
That I wanted this thread to stay where it was, and my posts to be deleted as not to distrupt the conversation futher.
I also stated i would make a new topic in the watchtower IF i felt the need to do so, (I did not)
Frankly.
This thread really is pointless here.

After reading your posts and knowing now that you are ShambleS, this is the perfect place for this thread. I'd rather have your pathetic whining and moronic lack of writing skills stay in here so a select few of us that come in to the WBR can all get a good example of how NOT to use the backroom. Thanks for your many examples.:2thumbsup:

(see i can be pedantic and annoying about grammer if i like 2)
I hope the irony of that post was intended.

I is pronounced E in welsh... and we write phornetically.
so eliffant would be the correct welsh spelling.
ff being 1 letter that sounds like. f/ph
so in english i just change the ff to ph.
and when i read it I still read eliphant.
I do that a lot.
hell ive even been known to write.
dde end.
dd being the welsh letter for a th sound.
still.
Its the usual reason i dont go around correcting people unless i wish to be ironick. or take my self to seriously :)..
