I'm with Anne on here predictions...

:laugh4:
Oh, I forgot, what's your predictions?
I predict that their ratings will drop significantly and next year it will be on a cable network. Instead of being on the regular channels and interrupting my shows. I also predict that Broke Back Mountain will win many oscar's and the middle east will be rioting again protesting its bad portrial of cowboys.
I also predict this will be the lowest-rated Oscars ever.I agree.

I predict right-wing pundits and FOX viewers will over-react to the inevitable anti-Bush & pro-socialism commentary of some of the entertainers. Both the comments of the entertainers and the reaction of the pundits will continue to have their usual significance -- that of a fart in church.

Oh, I forgot, what's your predictions?
I predict Anne probably should have seen the movies in question before speaking about them, because she has once again made a fool of herself. I won't go into all of them, because I haven't seen all of them. But I will talk a bit about Crash.
Yes, the movie deals with racism, but it is well worth seeing. I don't know if you have seen it or not Dave, but I would be willing to bet a sizeable amount of cash that you would actually like the movie. It takes a bunch of unrelated mini-stories and ties them all together very deftly, and makes for a very entertaining and thought-provoking couple of hours well spent.
And the racism theme is not limited to your standard "blacks are being kept down by the Man" theme that us lefties are oh so fond of. There is also some good exploration of the racism that conservatives are always accusing liberals (sometimes quite correctly) of: the patronizing, "I'm such a good guy because I am helping this helpless black guy" racism.
But the good thing about this movie is that if you want to you can just sit back and be entertained by a good story while you eat popcorn.
Give it a shot Dave, you won't be disappointed.
But as far as the Oscars themselves are concerned, I don't really give too much of a crap. I never watch them 'cause they are teh sux.

Your 'patronizaing racism' description sounds alot like what I expected to hear in Crash... the "Im so great cuz I'm nice to blacks, but OMG, deep down Im really terrified of them" ect.

I didn't find it to be pretentious at all. You should give it a shot. The best part is, it's on a lot of the cable movie networks now that you probably have included in your cable or digital tv package. I watched it commercial free in my living room and it didn't cost me a dime. That's my kind of flic.
Is it just me, or are movies going to cable a lot faster than they used to?

After consulting with the Yale admissions committee, the awards committee will give the Oscar to ... "Paradise Now," a heartwarming story about Palestinian suicide bombers. How good is it? Al-Jazeera gave it 4 1/2 pipe bombs. It's Air Syria's featured in-flight movie this month — go figure! I don't want to spoil the ending for you, but let's just say there won't be a sequel.
I hurt myself laughing at this one,
but I agree with Ann on this one.
I predict Oscars will give as many awards to movies that promote evil & debauchery as possible.
A few years ago they did so for a movie the glorifies murdering babies. That was the best thing to hit Hollywood in a very long time according to the academy.
Then a movie glorifying "lesbianism".
This year it is an old favorite, a movie glorifying men sodomizing other men. It's sure to "clean up" at the Oscars.
I predict that at the end of the lives of the academy voters who glorified such things in their time here, they will not be happy with the outcome of their decisions.

Holy crap!
You mean you can go to Hell because you voted for a movie to win an award?

That's not known yet. The baby who died in a tragic car accident on the way home from being baptized cried too much in the night. /sarcasm
It will be interesting to see who close Ann is to being right. And Goofball, you'll notice Ann noted that Crash lost points because it was actually a good, popular movie.

She also summed up Munich as "Jew athletes at Munich had it coming."
Somehow I doubt that the founder of the Survivors of the Shoah Visual History Foundation would direct a movie with such a premise.

Talking about F R E A K S ... I wonder when Ann got her gender reassignment done. She does seem obsessed with gay and transgender issues. The 'lady' doth complain too much methinks. :inquisitive:
It would be interesting if Hoffman and Huffman won from a surname point of view.
I don't remember where exactly I read it, but some mathematician did a good work-up relating the target age of the nominated films and the ratings for the Oscars. The younger the target demo = the higher the ratings. So the year Titanic was up for lots of awards, huge ratings. The year Gladiator was up for awards, low ratings.
All of the films nominated this year are aimed at a non-teen crowd, so it's not exactly rocket science to predict very, very low ratings. If only they would nominate an Aqua Teen Hunger Force movie, they'd get a bounce-back.
And BTW, the article (which I really wish I could find) demonstrated that the host of the show appears to have no bearing on the ratings.
And another BTW, Ann C. does seem really obsessed with gayness and trans-gender issues. I guess it's safer to beat up on the queers than to keep screaming "kill the rag-heads." What a wit!

I predict all of this doesn't matter since Jon Stewart is hosting the Oscars. I'm watching the show just for that.
I predict I won´t care about the stupid things enough to tune in.:book:
I saw Crash and Munich, and while they were not barnstorming popular entertainment films, they were both enjoyable in their own way and rather thought provoking.
Crash packs a strong emotional kick - the scene where Matt Dillon rescues a woman from a car is particularly powerful, as is the scene where the "angel" intervenes. It's probably a bit too emotional - the plotting is ultimately rather contrived if you think about it - but it is an experience.
Munich is more cerebral. The scenes about the actual Munich massacre are compelling, as you would expect from a director of Spielberg's calibre. The rest of the film is more measured and derives a lot of its interest from the moral and political issues it raises (to which it does not dictate an answer). I was so intrigued about the factual basis, I got the book - Vengenance - from which it is drawn. The film is reasonably faithful to the book, which in turn has a ring of truth to it.
Both films are also very well acted.
I wouldn't be sorry to see either rewarded.
All of the films nominated this year are aimed at a non-teen crowd, so it's not exactly rocket science to predict very, very low ratings. If only they would nominate an Aqua Teen Hunger Force movie, they'd get a bounce-back.More people probably watch ATHF than those movies. ~D
It's an interesting theory Lemur, but more people saw Titanic flat out. So it would only make sense that more people were interested in seeing it get awards. More people probably saw Titanic than all of these movies combined. (which I didnt like, btw)

The host is usually the only reason to watch the Oscars. Especially this year since I'd only seen two of the movies.
The Oscars is gonna be awesome. You know why you should know why.

My UPS Guy's brother-in-Law is an usher at the Kodak Theater where they hand those li'l gold statues out. And he says the shoe-ins are:
Best Movie: Crash
Best Actor: David Strathairn - GOOD NIGHT, AND GOOD LUCK
Best Actress: Reese Witherspoon - WALK THE LINE
Worst Movie: Deuce Bigalow: European Gigolo
Worst Actor: Will Ferrell - "Bewitched"
Worst Actress: Hilary Duff - "Cheaper by the Dozen 2"
But, he says, the big betting money is on whether Jennifer Lopez will or will not show cleavage this year. Odds are 6:1 on "No". Shocker.
I gave Steve (the UPS guy) a buck; 10 cents per bet, and 40 cents on "yes" for J-Lo.
I expect to see beer money rolling in on Monday. :)

but, if so, that's the first I've heard. Maybe I shouldn't have let my wife's subscription to Star magazine expire.

heh, looked up Dirty love on imdb, these are quotes from the featured review:
[it made] $822 it's second weekend. Eight hundred and twenty two dollars. I made more that weekend.
Gigli is Oscar-worthy compared to this.
Every single comment that praises this film has got to be from people in it
