I couldn't find it searching the forums, or by quickly checking the game, but does anyone happen to know in which province(s) you have to train Ghazi Infantry to give them their valor bonus?

Thanks & Cheers,
Vlad

I did a quick check of the unit file of VI and XL and you don't get province based valor bonus for Ghazis.

OK, thanks! That's too bad for them, I guess. :P

I am playing Vanilla MTW, so there may still be hope! How do you check the unit file, by the way?

With the Gnome Editor, available for download.

The files are in the folder where you installed Medieval Total War. For units, it is unit_prod11.txt.
I drag and drop it into my Excel spreadsheet. Some use the Gnome (https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showthread.php?t=26412) editor.

I haven't played MTW but is valour the same as experience chevrons? I think this because one of the barbarian factions has a faction leader with an ancillary which gives '+2 valour to the general's bodyguard'. When I transferred it to someone else his bodyguard lost 2 chevrons. Is this simply an error? or is valour more than just chevrons? (ie provides other bonuses like morale as well)

Valour is the M:TW measure of experience, as was honour in S:TW, so in that sense it is equal to the chevrons. The combat calculations of M:TW and R:TW work differently so you cannot really compare them, but one point of valour/honour gives +1 attack, +1 defense and +2 morale.

If you're willing to spend the time and money to build a fortress, you can always get your Ghazis a valor-bonus for the master swordsmith. Not as nice as getting 2 bonuses of course, for province and master-level building, but still something.

Master level buildings in MTW give valor bonus?!? I've played for a while now, but I didn't know that.

Is it sort of weapon specific? Like, Master Boyer gives valor bonus to ranged and Master Horsebreeder gives bonus to calvary... Or does the master level building requirement vary from unit to unit?

p.s. I've looked in numerology and the guides...haven't found this info

It's weapon specific: a master swordsmith will give a valour bonus to swordmen, master spear for spears etc., ...

It isn't as simple when you have units that require different buildings e.g. knights, futuwas, ...
You have to build all their required buildings to the master level before your unit gets a valour bonus.

Also, knights don't get the bonus, and any unit that requires a master-level building to be trained can't get that bonus.

Makes sense. Thanks.

It's not quite that dificult to get the +1 valor bonus - you don't have to build all the Master-level buildings, only the first one in their build requirements list.

You can use the Gnome editor http://www.3ddownloads.com/strategy-gaming/totalwar/Tools/Gnome_UnitBuildProj_Editorv2.0.zip or the Yaz Units Master tool here http://www.totalwar.co.kr/ to view the buildings. Once the first one in the list is taken to Master level, units of the right type (unless they require Master level to build) will gain +1 valor.

It's slighty off-topic but Nizaris 'lose' provincial bonus. When playing as Egyptians, Grand Mosque can only be built in Egypt (since Egypt has more buildings). Meanwhile Nizaris require a grand mosque and the bonus is in Syria. :(

So build up to Grand Mosque in Syria instead?

Or seeing as though you can only have one Grand Mosque at a time right? Build one in Egypt so you can start churning them out asap, but then when you get to the stage where you can build the Grand Mosque in Syria, destroy the one in Egypt and build a new one in Syria.

More expensive I know, but what do you want? The Moon on a stick? =P

Another option is to start building the Grand Mosque on the same turn in both Egypt and Syria.

I think assassins also get +1 star in Syria.

I think one of the patches in either MTW or VI stops you from being able to get around it that way now. Not sure though.

Related to this: I'm playing as the Turkish, and I have a Grand Mosque in Constantinopel, which I need for a Military Academy for Janissaries.

If I destroy the Mosque (but keep the Academy, ofcourse) and build a new Mosque in, say, Rum, will I still be able to build Janissaries in my 'Grand Mosque'-less Constantinople?

Yes, although the Janissaries produced will have somewhat lower morale (they don't get the Mosque bonus anymore). I always recruit Janissaries in Georgia (bonus for Janissary archers) en Bulgaria (hidden bonus for JHI). I know that JA are rather redundant compared to Janissary Infantry, but try to roleplay my game a little.
