View Full Version : Idea for keeping under 50K

I've never seen this mentioned in any post, so I'm posting it: not only you can queue up expensive buildings to keep under the 50k threshold, but you can, at the same time, queue up expensive units that take 2 turns to build (1 turn-buildable units are no good if you don't want to actually build them) mainly wardogs, as they are easy to get and they do not require a lot of recruits (I must warn you that queing up units takes out not only denari, but also people). 10 wardogs = minus 6800 denari, which is something, if you are desperate to keep under 50k. Just pay attention and check your unit building queue every turn if you don't want your cities to become Dogville.

At least dogville would be a great defense against barbarian factions.
Bribery would also work.. there's no point keeping to much money if you won't use it anyway so why not get a few extra family members.

Hi
RTW V1.5 Julii Imperial Campaign
I also used surplus money to help a struggling faction.
Macedon and Greek City states were fighting Brutii in Greece. The faction graph showed Macedon was broke. I gave Macedon cash gifts. They could buy more units and fight on harder against Brutii. Thus would weaken Brutii who would be an enemy once the Roman civil war kicked off.
This worked. Allowing my Julii to expand eastwards through Dacia and Thrace whilst Macedon contained Brutii in the south.

Fleets... at least you get some mileage out of them.

If your trying to stay below 50k, why not make increases to a unit's recruitment cost and upkeep per turn? This can seriously drain your funds, and will limit what you are able to do in terms of expansion at the start of a new imperial campaign. You may also find that you don't have enough denarii left to retrain units.
Watch out though, if you increase these stats too high then you'll be struggling for denarii throughout the campaign. Use sensible values rather than 0000's etc.

Try giving "presents" to allies or even factions that you want to be more aggressive. In vanilla Rome, if im one of the roman factions im always helping the other two with gifts of about 5000 every turn. It really spices things up.

Or you could just download EB and watch your economy flounder. EB rules better than RTW, anyhow :)

Does the 50k threshold still exist in Rome Total Realism Gold? I' switched to this mod right now and I'd like to know if I can go amok and make as much money as I want or I should still keep under 50k.
I make sure that I'm churning out enough military units to keep abreast of my total income and try not let the treasury get too high.
Is there a limit on the size of the army for factions like a hard limit of 30 stacks total?

why do you want to keep under 50K?

Hi d1football
If the RTW game finds you have more than 50k [at the end of your turn I think rather than at the start ] it will increase the chances of your family members gaining bad traits.
Its gets worse at 100K and worse again at 150K.
So if you want good characters avoid the effects of bad traits by spending the cash.
But then again, once you have that sort of money it might not matter how many bad traits you have. :laugh4:
A downside of spending that surplus is not having enough to bribe everyone in sight. Im currently in that situation. 46k cash. Bribing a Gaul leader will cost 35k..leaving me short for a few turns. Had I not been trying to keep below the 50k I probobly would have had well over 100k by now.
why do you want to keep under 50K?
Basically that is the treshhold for a load of nasty vices: if your treasury exceeds 50.000 denarii your governors will suddenly start developing expensive tastes and become embezzelors more often. This becomes worse when your treasury exceeds 100.000 denarii, and once more at 150.000 denarii. Keep the money flowing and this won't be a problem.

right now im playing the XGM and my money is well over 200K i'm going to look over my family members to see what type of traits they have, because i have seen a couple govoners with the name "wrathful"
While financing allies sure keeps you below the 50k it might very well open a whole new can can of worms. In my current Egypt campaign I made alliances with Parthia, Armenia and the Greek Cities, typically the underdogs.
As to be expected, Parthia eventually got wiped out, the Greek nearly were, as well. I gifted them huge sums of cash, to help them fighting the Seleucids and Pontus (who, just by accident, also happened to be my enemies ~;) Honi soit...).
Seleucia was wiped out eventually, Pontus got cornered down and then all came down. First the Greek, ungrateful bastards, backstabbed me. Then a city I conquered from Pontus (the one in the Elbrus mountains, Arxandthensomething) rebelled and became immediately Armenian (I´ve never seen that), plunging me into war with Armenia. The Scythians, with whom I was allied, didn´t take that too well and cancelled their alliance with me (they´re still allied with the Armenians). My only remaining alliance is Thrace, and by the looks of it they won´t last long against the Bruti onslaught. Thankfully the Numidians aren´t trying anything funny (yet), but then I´m not allied to them.

I don't know the XGM, but mods often change V&V's so the treshhold might be different. Wrathfull is not a result from too much money as far as I know. If it is the consequence of a high anger-trait, it can be caused by temples of War.

You could always build more armies. You can also remove all peasants and town watch from your garrisons and only use real units. 4 units of Legions in 20 cities equals a lot of unit upkeep.

Yeah I think so. Didn't bribe for a while and my best governor got expensive tastes which gave -2 management. He still had 10 management though :2thumbsup:
