View Full Version : What's changed in the patched combat model?

I'm just wondering if anyone has noticed any changes in EBs combat after the patch?

I loved it before and I loved it after (just as before the patch, the more robust cavalry and less superhuman morale levels are a relief after a long time playing RTR 6.0 Gold).

I haven't poked around the stats, but two changes I think I've noticed so far from the battles are:

(a) the 2HP general's bodyguards seem to have gone. :2thumbsup: I like it - before they were overpowered; now since they are usually well-armoured heavy cavalry, they are still monsters in the early game but not so OTT.

(b) my javelins and pila seem to do more damage. Before the patch I'd been moaning about having to work around for a flank or rear shot. But now they do decent damage face-to-face. Same could be true of slings (although their higher ammo makes any lack of punch per volley less noticeable).

I'll post more when I have more experience. (I'll be interested to fight some ellies, for example).

The Gaesatae now have the more normal elite unit size of 60 (large) not 80.

Good to know. Their presence in the rebel towns north of Rome were a big factor in making me head south! :sweatdrop:

Hehe, its nice to see that they haven't lost their firepower though. I found four units of em in galatia and those guys along with a couple cheap spearmen units clobbered my 6 phalanxes (can't remember the names, they are the ones pontos starts with). I had only one skirmisher general for cavalry. :shame:

Playing as Arche Seleukeia I gave the Gaesatae a few volleys of fire arrows then sent my general in, yes he is somewhat more fearsome than a pontic one but I just used him as a decoy to draw off as many troops as I could all that followed however where light cavalry so I sent another general in and boxed the light cavalry in a confined space slaughtering them. then I just harassed the spearmen feinting attacks.

While all this was happening I moved two units of Pantodapoi Phalangitai in while my archers had the Gaesatae running around like idiots I made sure the Pantodapoi had their flanks protected by the walls of the settlement this allowed them to hold out much longer than normal which allowed me to bring in the last two Pantodapoi units without the originals routing the new arrivals attacked the rear of the Gaesatae which decimated them.

The Gaesatae did manage to eventually get on the left flank of my original Pantodapoi but by this time my generals had returned and after one or two charges the Gaesatae though it was time to flee to the town center none of them made it that far however and it was just a matter of mopping up from there.

(I do play on medium battle difficulty so the stats are even)
