if you were going to eat a fresh sliced raw tomato, would you put salt and pepper or sugar on it?
I was recently eating some tomato slices (after a potluck, all the sandwich stuff was all gone except the tomatoes) and i proceeded to crack open a packet of sugar and sprinkle it across my tomatoes another potluck patron expressed disgust and noted that they had never seen such a thing and that salt and pepper are the only appropriate things to sprinkle on a tomato.
Am i the only one who eats tomatoes with sugar? :inquisitive:
Reading your thread brings some odd memories back.
Maybe I`ll try it..
I eat them with mayonnaise.

depending on my mood, either salt and white pepper or black pepper. I also like a bit of olive oil on them as well. Very nice and succulent.

Salt, black pepper and olive oil for me.

It's all in the context. Think a late august day, the sun is shining, you have a thirst, it's 250 outside. A tomato in it's pure form is like a melon. IIRC they belong to the same family, like concuber (thats right. my grand-daughter sez so(cucumber)) very refreshing.

I eat them with mayonnaise.
Agreed 100%, tomatos are at their best with mayo. Unless you carry with you at potlucks mozarella, salt & pepper, basil, capers and olive oil.
Finally, after all these years... a tomato poll! :2thumbsup:
Pepper. Lots and lots of pepper.

Are we talking Scotch Bonnet, or fiercer?
Habeneros? Scoth Bonnet are the same far as I know. There are none hotter.
I was talking black pepper, but I am a true fan of scorching hot food. We need a thread on that.

The few times I eat tomatoes not mixed with anything, I prefer black pepper only on them.

Tomatoes grow anywhere and everywhere. I grew up in the urban-sewer of Detroit in the 50's and 60's. Tomatoes grew even there, in that forlorn, nasty place. I'm ashamed to admit that I, as a child, stole tomatoes off the vine of whatever neighbors were brave enough to grow them.
Salt shaker in my pocket.
As evil as that was, and wrong, I must say: Those were the sweetest, most satisfying lunches I ever had.
Salt.
Tomatoe
Your friend.

I've had 'em with sugar, they're nice. I haven't tried just with salt or pepper... I do quite like my tomatoes provencal. Or perhaps with a dash of olive oil, balsamic vinegar and mozzarella.

Well at least "Somebody Else" has had them with sugar. I would recommend giving it a try if you get the chance they really are good that way.
If i were to get my choice of any way to eat them i would have to say, with salt, pepper, lemon, olive oil, artichoke hearts and some spices mixed together and left over night then served on the side of a big o’l hunk of grilled red meat. but without all that stuff a sugar packet is a nice side dish to a “Beefsteak” Tomato.

I eat mine with dried onions sprinkled on top, preferably with some cheese underneath.

Tomatoes are to be eaten alone, or with a sprinkling of salt. None of this 'pepper' nonsense, much less sugar!
