Just in case you guys didnt know one of the most realistic WW2 FPS's is to be released on the 14th of march via steam and a retail version to follow a few weeks after.

If you played the mod version you will be really happy with this, Ive played the private Beta and i must say it is one of the best games ive played in many years.

It looks good, though I won't be able to play it. The only downside seems to be that it runs from Steam.

Game looks awesome, will definatly be wanting this. :2thumbsup:

Despite many peoples evil dislike of Steam I have used it for a while now and never encountered a problem with it as of yet.

After reading the review, I have but one reservation with this game.

Now, these ultra realistic shooters are not a new thing. And they all lead to one end: the SNIPER is king. Slow movement, no crosshairs lots of cover make snipers gods. The thing is, they always leave out the one big thing about snipers, scope recalibration, crosswinds, and just holding the rifle steady.

So my question for those who've played it, are snipers dominating?

I d/l it 2 days ago (took about 3 hours thru steam), fired it up yesterday; played a few "practice" rounds. Haven't encountered snipers yet - so far just infantry/tank mix. The vehicles and weapons seem quite realistic (limited visibility in tanks and apc's, for example; also shooting infantry weapons unsupported is wobbly - as it should be).

I'll try MP tonight. Checking last night, there seemed to be many games available.

I've played the UT2k4 mod version 3.3, so I can't really comment on this full standalone release.

But sniper is not king, not by itself and not in game terms.

Holding rifle steady is an issue with any RO rifle, and the sniper is no exception. I haven't noticed crosswind effects, but I can't aim anyway -*- makes +. And when you fire, you often have no idea what has happened (losing scopeview).

Haven't seen scope recalibration, you will find that in Novalogics blackhawkdown.

Sniper isn't king in game terms either. Each map supports different classes of soldiers (bold action gun, machinegun, tankcommander..) and different amounts for each class. I've not seen a map yet, that supports more than one sniper on each side.

When you have a very good prone position and play it smart, you can make some kills with the sniperrifle. But not oddly much (it's not a CS autosniper).

The Game is really good, if you like your realism it is perfect for you, And about the sniper being king, its not true, of course the sniper is going to have an advantage, but still normal bolt rifle with out a sniper can just be as deadly in the right hands, as can the STG 44 the German Assault rifle, this gun is awesome on Konigsplatz ( a very good map which see's the last germans defending the Reichstag against the russians. I played the mod which was better that COD 1 & 2 in my opinion this puts the mod, COD 1 & 2, any of the Medal Of Honour series to shame. Plus which other game is completely based on the eastern front? Trust me worth the £14 it will cost you.

I don't have time for a full review, and I apologize for the delay in this. I will say my $20 u.s. was well-spent.

As cited above, R.O.:Ostfront concentrates on realism, and immersion. You use the standard WASD movement keys, but the weapons control keys are a little different to get used to (of course you can re-map them).

The HUD is minimalist, just giving you the info you need to navigate, and not giving you too many clues. Health packs, racks of ammo, etc are NOT readily available, forcing you to conserve your resources, take careful aim, move tactically, all of which I like (I'm not a big fan of 'run-and-gun' games).

The MP experience (3 times) has been good. Didn't get immediately sniped at spawning, my co-players had a sense of humor, and weren't screaming. I don't think this product will appeal to the attention-deficit 'I pwn u' crowd. I didn't come across any campers.

The SP experience (they call "Practice") is fun. The AI bots seem to learn your pattern after a bit (if you have one) and work to counter it, making each spawn a different battle, and forcing you to adapt-or-die.

Graphics are great. Individual tree leaves falling at random as you scoot around.

All-in-all, out of 5 stars, I give it 4-and-a-half. Good fun. Cheap. Realistic. A whole new place geographically.

Again: if you're a fantasy player with unlimited ammo, HUD showing where all the bad guys are, and a speed-demon, you probably won't like this one.

I'm not much of an MPer, and really not very experienced or talented at FPS's, so a mildly competent AI is adequate for me.~:)

Should warn you mate, it isnt really intended for singleplayer, it is ment to be a multiplayer.

Should warn you mate, it isnt really intended for singleplayer, it is ment to be a multiplayer. Thanks for the warning. I know it is really supposed to be MP, but I'm not the best at FPS's so the AI in the "practice" mode might work for me, especially if I play "dead is dead", ie no respawning. And I should finally be getting a high speed connection in the next month or two: perhaps this will be the game to get me to take the MP plunge.

But thanks again for the heads-up.
