What about agnostics? I thought they're quite a large group.
I dislike the stigma of "agnostic", but then gnostics have a very specific meaning, so I'll have to stick to that.

But, but...Atheism is not a religion! The poll is misleading!
Atheism is a belief that requires one's faith, beyond proven scientific facts, that there is no God.
Agnosticism is what you're looking for.

So if I don't believe in Santa Claus, the Tooth Fairy or Martians that is a religion?
Science relies on proven facts... not facts yet to be proven.
An atheist who relies on proven facts, should not be expected to believe in something that has yet to be proven.
Calling atheism a religion is a great Euclidian point.

...the rest of you beleive in false gods, INFIDELS, BURN.
Baptized and attending Episcopalian, which may or may not qualify as Christian, depending on how long your fundamentalist beard has grown. Definitely not a Christian in Nav's book.
We're weird. We let our priests marry. And we let women become priests. And they even elected an openly gay episcopal Bishop, which must make all of the closeted gay priests in the other Christian sects green with envy.
Face it, Episcopalians rock the house.

That is incorrect, if you never had any idea of the existence of God you would not need to to have faith in your disbelief. Some people are raised atheist therefore always regard God as something they don't care about, like Santa. Now if the knowledge of the existence of God was biologically inherent, then you would have a point, otherwise you are standing on a huge phallacy.

Also it doesn't recognise the difference between faith, belief and religion.
They are not the same... religion is merely the system to suck out the material possesions of the faithful believers to give to a priesthood who may or may not be worthy of getting those material possessions.

Voted "other." Was born half-Jewish, half-Irosh Catholic, although my grandfather declared long before I was born than no ***** (my last name... no way am I saying my real name here!) shall ever set foot in an Irish Catholic church again. Why, I don;t know, but I think I got the catholic blood anyway, because instead of singing the prayers during the holidays (as Jews are supposed to) I say them rapidfire like an Irish priest.
However, despite following a smattering of holidays from both religions, I actively follow my own faith and belief. It is culled mainly from Henry Miller and Zorba the Greek, with a little from Hunter S. Thompson and some from my fevered imagination. I find it better to make my own way rather than have some pompous bastard try to tell me how I should live my life. Kinda encourages me to think for myself. :2thumbsup:
I was baptized and comfirmed an Anglican christian, but I never really beleived in any of it. So I un-baptized myself and went with Baal (plus a few others). Goat (and when it really hits the fan, human) sacrifces, whats not to like. Even still I have no real use for a religion, it's meaningless.
Correction, Atheism is the lack of religion. I am Christian, of course, if you looked at my last post you knew that. Who put Satanist???

Byz, what has Satan done for you lately? He's a slacker and he doesn't deserve your attentions, even as an Avatar of Personal Empowerment, or whatever the current satanic thinking is.
Come over to the dark side. Episcopalians celebrate the Dionysian rite of wine and orgy every Thursday, and we wrap up the workweek by putting captured warriors into a wicker man, whom we burn as we dance naked around the meadow.
No, really. And all of our priests are hotties. It's a lot more fun than you're thinking.

Baptised Catholic... but I'm wholly agnostic. I'd like to believe that there is a god/gods or something that gives a little meaning to life, while at the same time I honestly don't care what other people follow and never push my idealisms on them, and I expect the same from them. Really, religion in my view is about believing in something that gives our lives purpose, whatever that may be, more power to ya.
Atheism is clearly not a religion, as it is the lack of one. Something which is by definition the lack of something, can't then be exactly the opposite as well.
Anyway, avoiding that, quite happy to be an atheist and one which thrives in pointing out the stupidity of religious faiths, especially that of Christianity, a religion which has killed and does kill far more than any other faith around today and will continue to do so as long as the relics reign supreme in it.
Atheist (especially with people's definition or lack of definition of God).
As people would say baldness is not a hair color, but lack of hair,
hence atheism is not a religion, but a lack of "god" belief.

No we simply believe that those who have created the myth of a God - and then support that myth, are wrong.
If I was to state there is a small pink elephant on the surface of the sun and I was to make my case so convincing that a good few people followed me in my belief in the pink elephant - named pinko, incidently. If you were to say that I was talking rubbish and there could never be such an occurence, that is not believing in anything, it is simply stating how there is nothing to believe in.
Stating there is no God is exactly the same, there simply is nothing to believe in.

If your saying some thing does not exist. as long as you believe thats true.

Baldness has nothing to do with hair colour, it has to do with the amount of hair the person has (obvious I'd've thought).
I accept Jag's point that to be an atheist no belief is required, but I would still say that atheism has a place in the discussion of belief merely as atheists state they haven't got any.
What irritates me beyond measure are those that state God's existence by the trite "look around you". That they can be swayed by such "evidence" makes me wish they could be banned from voting.
Mormons are what they say they are. Religions have to be defined by what they want as there is no rational starting point to fix beliefs on. What are "true" Christians? Are the Coptics the True Christians, as the Catholics didn't come around for centuries, and after a few 100 years a few more isn't going to make that much difference.

The asking of this question has always reminded me of an incident that occurred when I was on patrol in the Northern Ireland in the mid-eighties.
I had a Gurkha officer accompanying my patrol and I, and was introducing him to some of the natives. One formidable local unionist lady fixed him with a beady eye and demanded to know his religious affiliation - not an uncommon question in those sectarian days. He calmly explained that he was a Hindu.
"Aye," she barked, "but are ye a Catholic or a Protestant Hindu?"

My Id-card says I'm catholic. That is because I was baptized as catholic.
I din't participate in the confirmation, though. I think this means I'm not a full member of the catholic community.
My parents have not taught me to believe but rather encouraged disbelief.
Since my early childhood I've not believed in any god and have questioned procedures like confession.
Today, I'd call me agnostic (since I can't be sure that God doesn't exist).
It's my belief that humans have created gods and not the other way round.

I refuse to make a stance towards relgion, since it`s most of the a time a 50-50 chance whether they are correct or not, and that no scientific evidence has been shown to me that indicate that they are either correct or incorrect.
I guess that makes me an agnostic.

I'll say this for Mormons -- they may believe some really, really weird things (righteous people rule a planet after death? God is incarnate on a planet but won't tell us where he is?) and the founder may have been a nutter, but the modern-day followers are pretty great. I haven't met a Mormon I haven't liked yet.
Just goes to show you that good people can make a questionable theology work, while sexually-repressed, ignorant people can turn a religion of moderation (Islam) into their own private hell.
