I just saw on local TV that a pastor in Berlin received some packs of coffee and tea from Kenia. They were provided by Kenians so that poor people in Berlin would have something warm to drink while it´s cold here.
If I understand that correctly this is because many people in Berlin have to rely on the church and other organisations to provide them with food, tells a lot about how our government cares about it´s own people...
And I can´t provide a link for that, not a big story it seems.

No, it´s my fault.
Wanted to post it in the backroom.
I guess one of our nice mods can move it.

Well if you can't find a link to the news then it's pretty unreliable :book:

It shows how much you care about your own people. Why do you lecture others about their lack of generosity instead of being more generous yourself? If you're that concerned about the plight of others why don't you spend your money on them instead of a commuter and internet connection? I wonder how much food you could buy for a starving child with the 50 USD it costs for a computer game. (Extra vitriol added due to post location)

Maybe it´s because we all pay the government to care for theose people but the government doesn`t?
Without an internet connection I couldn´t really study btw, most professors just put all their stuff onto their homepages.
But still I want to spend some money for a good purpose, but let that be my problem. I just wonder why I pay taxes and these people often payed taxes and insurances all their lives and now the government has no better idea than to rewuire more taxes, give them less money when they retire and so on and on. Our government is all about pay more taxes, take care of yourself and buy a lot of stuff to support our economy...:juggle2:

I doubt that anyone has to rely on the church for food in Germany. In fact, I doubt that anyone has to be homeless. Certainly not in Berlin. Any Hartz IV receiver has more money per month than I do and I could afford a room twice the size I have now in Berlin. But of course, if you're an illegal alien...

Here is the story:

Ok, this is just a symbolic gesture from some people in a Kenian hospital that received free pharmacy from Germany for years. The shipment is about 300 kg of coffee and is delivered via airplane.

Nice gesture indeed but I guess the transport is more expensive than the coffee :juggle2:

I think its just solidarity.Germans helped them and now they want to give even little something back.

Yes that´s it. Therefore I think the worries Husar mentioned about the German social system are a bit exaggerated if you compare it to 99 % of the other nations on earth.

Nobody needs to rely on a church or a charitable organization for food and shelter in Berlin. That's not what is at stake.

I would call those who are in the second phase of Hartz IV, who recieve Arbeitslosengeld II poor. I think quite a few of them are not able to get out, meet people, get themselves a cup of coffee.

Going out for a cup of coffee is a luxury, but also a social primary good. You can not participate fully in society if you can't afford something basic as that. This is what is at stake, and I do consider it a worry to the German social system.

Haudegen, transport was provided for free:

'Die Fluggesellschaft LTU nimmt die Kisten kostenlos aus Mombasa mit'.

oops, I overlooked that. :idea2:

Agreed. Well it´s obvious that the social system is far from perfect. But that´s what we can afford at the moment. :embarassed:

And my personal view is that further improvements are not to be expected in the near future. As long as there are nations in economic competition with Germany which choose to spend significantly less on social issues than Germany does, we can´t afford it.

That´s what I thought/think, but always makes me wonder why we have homeless people and people sitting in the streets begging for money?
Is it because they´re all alcoholics?
No sarcasm btw.

You have that in every country Husar no matter how rich it is.
Some are alcoholics some immigrants some are just down on their luck and some even do it for a living.
Fact of the matter is that they have places they can go to.

Nobody is forced to be homeless in Germany...or any western European country, or North America for that matter. A social welfare check may not be much, but it's enough to rent some cheap living space and put some basic food on the table. Most homeless people are homeless only because of themselves - because they spend whatever money they have on alcohol or drugs instead of spending it sensibly on housing and paying bills. Either that or they're illegal immigrants. The government IS reaching out for them with both hands but they just won't take the hand and pull themselves out of their misery.
