View Full Version : I'm about to lose my empire :(

I am the Brutii, and I'm about to be assaulted from 2 directions, and each direction has 4000 troops. The Factions that are attacking are the Guals, and the Parthians. Each factions has like 4 stacks(don't know exactly) and are moving towards my top and bottom provinces(Guals attacking from the top, Parthians attacking from the bottom(They took Greece and boated around(They control the waters pretty much)and are sailing to attack from around my coast and attacking the Scipii first(which WILL be destroyed, their biggest army is 300). And the Gauls deciminated the Julili(except for 1 or 2 provinces) and are attacking me. My biggest army is 804(exact). The real problem I'm having is comprehending HOW they have so many troops. I can't even make that many, yet the GAULS have the most on the map! And the armies have both seen fighting, so they are upgraded a little(some have silver "valour" points(I dinnae know how to spell it)). Even if I destroy one army, I still have to fight the other, which I don't know if I can get another one raised by the time they get here(for some reason the Parthians are taking their time, sometimes taking a ship, going back to the coast, then moving back). I know they are going for us Romans, seeing as we are the only targets left in the South(the Parthians destroyed them all). So, can someone tell me how I can win this war? Oh and sinking boats are not an option, they have at least 3 star boats, I don't have any(they were all sunk). And how did they get so many men?
Are you playing a Mod?
What year is it in the game out of interest?
How many provinces do you have currently (names would be helpful)?
Are you sure it’s the Parthians? I understand an attack from Gaul and that they can potentially have large armies as they have a good starting tally of regions (7 intially) but the Parthians are right over on in the Far East (Iran), would have to get through the Seleucids, Pontus, Greeks, Macedonia and even potentially the Egyptians before they got to you or even within striking distance?? If it is them it must be late in the game and begs the question “What have you been doing all this time?”
Initial Suggestions:
Build some forts to slow them down as strategic points – the extreme North of Apulia for example. Raise some small armies of cheap troops and populate the forts with them – 4-6 units will be sufficient.
Send contingents to help your Roman Allies. You have military access through their lands it would be far better to stop the invaders BEFORE they get to your regions.
Start recruiting archer units.
Your troops are superior to the enemies (unless one of them IS Parthia and they have Heavy Horse….in which case…*gulp*), don’t worry about fielding an army which is outnumbered 2:1 for example. Just fight defensively on the battlefield, bring as many missile troops as you can.
Find a hill, place your back to the edge of the map and grind them down.

how many cities do you have?
do you have enough money to raise new troops?
i had a situation almost like yours,
my army was around 1000 men, random units
in one city i had 3 peasant units, 3 archers and one heavy cav ((was a family member)).
i lost my city against goth ((random units around 2500 men)) but decimated their army so they had almost nothing left.
my army, that was to far south to help the cityand they had to face another goth army anyway, i put up in the mountains and let the goth attack so i had a big hill to defend on. the goth army had about 3000 men. i slaughterd it head north took care of the remaining goth in the city
killed about 5000 men and lost only little more then what i had in the town.
so my advice to you is to sacrfice somthing, find a realy good defend area, then fight like a devil.
or put all your men in a city and hope the enemies siege you then attack, towns are realy easy to defend, as long as theres at least stonewalls

You could use single unit cavalry army to mess up and split up their four stacks. Then take them out one by one with your superior Roman forces. The Gauls shouldn't present a challenge, but Parthia might do so. Prepare to fight with your weak light cavalry and archers in order to outflank them and get rid of those annoying horse archers.

Hi
I am Brutii also. Gaul looks menacing to my west and think I will be fighting them soon for Salona.
Do your Gaul enemy have Forrester archer units? . If they dont get a couple of cavlary units and a general into the action..picking off the gaul infantry units one by one. If they have Forresters...Im not so sure. Keep clear of them until the rest of the Gaul army can be routed?.
As for how did they get so many. I assume the Julii let the Gaul keep many towns in nothern Italy and France...and they just pumped out unit after unit. Thats what happened to me...Julii allied to Gaul for a while.
Is you Brutii cash machine is ringing? Build lots of troops and hire mercenaries.

I have about 40 Provinces. I have spain. And the eastern part of Europe. But the Britans are in between me and the Gauls from that side. I took most of Italy though. See, I kicked the others out, but they just moved up and down. I'm just going to let the other Roman Factions fight first, let them wear the Parthians and Gauls down, and then Blitz them. Oh, and the Parthians took all of Africa, ALL of it.

You mean all of Asia I suppose. Hold strategic points with your heavy infantry (Yes, your heavies can outcast their lights in head on bridge battles) till you field armies that can handle them. Make sure trade is going alright if you're having finance issues, raise taxes to max (It's negative to not do so anyway <-- Bad vices).

Next time if something like this happens,
eg. Julii ally to Gauls
Brutii ally to Greeks
Scipii ally to Carthage
ATTACK THE FACTION, otherwise it wastes your precious time and resources having to fight them yourself. Once those factions are at war, the end result is TWO weakened factions (the roman and other rival faction), leaving easy pickings for you. If the rival faction wins, wipe them out when they are still weak, and a Roman faction out is always good. If the Romans win, you can concentrate your troops taking other, jucier provinces that pump out cash.
Win-Win!

What exactly messes up? Your campaign sounded darn interesting.

It is just the files are to big(I'm gonna try to make them smaller now actually) and they are the wrong file types. And yes, this is the MOST interesting campaign i've ever played. And to the people that ask if it is modded, I'm not sure. My brother said he downloaded something for the game, but I can't find anything visible. I'll ask him again.

With 40 regions, I don't think that you need to worry about losing your Empire.
Surely you are "after" the Marius reforms.
Do you have foundries? Switch your armies back and forth to upgrade the maximum number of units to Foundry quality Armor. This will keep your casualties down when you do fight.
Having about 4-6 Archer Auxilia on the walls will cost the enemy many men if they come into range.
Sending out skirmishers "might" help to draw them into range for your archers.
I am having a similar challenge with Egypt in "how do they crank out so many armies?" Most of them are starting to come at me now with "gold" armor, and my spies have only found one Egyptian City that even "could" have a foundry. I don't know where they are coming from, but I do know that I have to kill 2 or 3 armies of about 2,500 men each every other turn. Considering the number of cities and towns they have, they might be able to send a full stack at me every three turns, but they are sending 2 or 3 stacks every two turns. Go figure that one out.

I can't help you too much, but I love your sig.
Well done mate...
I agree with most of them here, archer units and defendable positions. Either cities or steep mountain sides (also good for their range). It will also be good to have some cavalry to kill off their fleeing units.
Sometimes when your sieged the army will take (mostly) positions on the right site of the gate your are defending. I usually put more archers therefor on that side of my walls. They will have to run through a hail of arrows to reach their position, usally already killing 100's.
Good luck! And remember, loosing a city is not so bad. Dont forget to destroy all the important army buildings before you do. Then they can re-man or re-armor their troups for several rounds after seizing the city *wink*
