You really need it and can't play without it. It enables basic things as the 4 turns per year script, but also many ... other things.:dizzy2:
I'll leave the technical side to the members. :sweatdrop:

"background script" as name suggest its just a script that runs in background.
Script is a program written in a scripting language. In this case its RTW script language.
Because of RTW nature this script has to be turned on manually every time you load or start EB game. You do it by clicking any of your cities. This will cause advisor to pop up. You click him, you click show_me button, and its done.
Script is activated.
There is no off switch.
Script handles everything that we cant do using standard RTW files.
It handles seasons, military reforms, goverment buildings, AI assistance, unit training costs, independent factions alliances, victory conditions and many more.
It is very important element of EB and you cant play EB without it.

If you quicksave then quickload then the background script is "off" until you turn it on again. If you can ignore the chap you pesters you about it everytime you click on one of your own settlements you can play without it; although I have no idea why you would unless you were trying to test something bug-related - the script is sort of the point of EB, I thought? :)
