Leave it to Idaho to take something that was clearly made in a humerous context as something sound for political exploitation.

You can clearly see that both the Englishman speaking in the background and most of the people being interviewed are not at all being serious.

Is this addressed at me?
I don't know where you read political exploitation in my post.

It was obviously made to scare the world. The people who seem so willing to engage in violence also seem to be the people with absolutely no idea about the planet they live on.

No, you're just presenting it as "fact" in order to make a petty politically-motivated point.

It's clearly not serious. Clearly the majority of those people are not only joking, but are in fact being persuaded to say something downright silly. Either that, or the crew doing the documentary deliberately went out to find the dumbest Americans in london and decided to present them as "The American People."

It's Bullshit. It's hate-mongering bullshit.

Well it seems that you not only need to work on your sense of humour but need to work on your geography a bit better too. The presenter is Australian and the location is obviously not London but somewhere in the US.

I'm sorry but thinking Tasmania is South Korea and Australia is North Korea is :laugh4:

One can find idiots wherever one decides to look for them.

It seems if you wish to believe this as factual evidence of anything then you fall into that same catergory in which the film maker went after.

:dizzy2:

As a humor piece about how idiotic some people can be or made to be on film it is rather humorous.

I'd have to agree with that. I am certain that if I were to go out and ask people at random here I would find some that magically confuse Australia with, say, Canada or whatnot.

It's a humorous piece and proof only that you can find stupid people anywhere you go.

About ten years ago, when I had my boutique in Leeds, I had two girls who worked for me. One was an A level student, the other was, well quite frankly a chav, although a very nice girl.

The A level girl, who btw had an O level in history, had no idea what had happened in England in 1066 or 1215!!!

The other one, after I'd been on holiday in Lagos, thought that Portugal was, quote, "Just south of Sheffield". Although technically correct (It is virtually due south.) she meant that it was 'somewhere' in Yorkshire. :dizzy2:

She also couldn't grasp that the USA was a different country. She was a big Buffy fan and would have none of it.

Uh-huh.. I live in America. So by proxy I come into contact with Americans every day. I can assure you, most have a sense of basic geography. There's a reason we have the top science and math institutions in the world, there's a reason people come here for the best that medical science has to offer, and there's a reason we have more high-quality universities than any other nation in the world.

I am genuinely offended by the trash in the first post.
I live in the United States (I'm not sure which part of America you live in--Chile? Venezuela? Canada?)

While it's true that the US produces among the finest scientists, engineers, and computer programmers in the world, they are counterbalanced by a remarkably ignorant populous. The US, as in most other areas, is a nation of extremes.

I taught an advanced history course in highschool. These were the finest history students in the school. I gave a pop geography quiz on the first day of class to check prior knowledge. The test had the basic landforms, like the six continents, the peninsulas of Europe and the Middle East, the four oceans, and a dot for the city of San Diego, where the school is located.

I think 5 of the 25 students got them all correct. About 5 more made an acceptable number of mistakes. Another 5-8 did rather poorly, but only embarassing for an advanced class. The rest had only a couple correct. One had two answers: North America and South America. Unfortunately, she labeled them reversed.

I think someone being "genuinely offended" must be defensive about the US due to embarrassment. If the satire portrayed in the video weren't realistic, an American would be truly vexed at why anyone would make the joke. Being offended is an admission that the video was painfully accurate.

I think the US schools are fine. In some ways, like teaching critical thinking, they exceed the schools of many other countries. It's the homelife of the students that makes them uneducated. They get little or no support. In fact, I've personally seen many situations where the parents were not only not helpful, but detrimental to their children's education. I've also seen families where the children are more mature and have more knowledge than the parents.

Mexican, Korean, and Japanese families are extremely supportive of their children's educations. They pretty much turn their home into an educational environment. The best US parents do the same, but, sadly, this is far from the norm. The norm is, "If my television is bothering your studying, go to the library or something!"

Your stuck in sterotypical generalization of one are of the United States. Hell again making generalizations of this type why in the hell do you still live in the United States if your stuck on the negative aspects of your daily life.

Hell I have lived in 10 different states - and not once have a seen the bleak sterotype your attempting to protray as the norm. Its out there - but not as bad as your attempting to paint here. You might want to get out of the city and go visit the rural areas of this country. Stuck on hating whitey

I didn't complain about white European or South American parents. I didn't say that the parents that I was complaining about are white. Perhaps they are black or some other ethnic group. I chose to contrast with Koreans, Japanese, and Mexicans because those are three of the four other nations I feel myself experienced enough to judge. I accidentally left out Peru, which I would have included.

Generalization after generalization. Must be a crappy place where you live. You really need to get out and tour the nation some more. I wonder why my child gets decent grades if all us parents are so bad.

I have been to many parts of the country. Not only that, keep in mind that the great majority of San Diegans were not born here, but come from all over the nation. And I guess I have to [sigh] say, once again, that an observation of a society doesn't mean that all members of that society have the same traits. I shouldn't have to mention that every time. Social discussions often must include generalizations. There are recognizable trends in all societies.

Even if only half of the US population are poor parents, it's still a crisis. If you're personally a good parent, you can feel special.

It's funny that you don't seem to complain about generalizations of other cultures as much as your own.

Rural people may be more selfless in their childrearing (let's hope so). However, if urban parenting is worse, we're still talking about a majority of the US population.

The divorce rate in the US is about 56% of married couples. Most of them have children. The effects on those children are usually deep, painful, and lead to lifelong emotional troubles, including bitterness, self-esteem problems, feelings of extreme personal guilt, and authority issues that affect their learning. Also, having a single parent generally means that they have less parental interaction.

The US is in crisis. I wish I could say otherwise, but I see it everywhere I go. I see it in the schools; I see it on the trains and buses; I see it in the politics; I see it in the workplace; I see it in traffic. Other people sense this crisis, even if they aren't admitting it exists. The recent religious fervor is a symptom of it. If they would only analyse the problems objectively and take the bitter pills that could improve the situation, rather than running into a church and throwing reactionary politics at the problems, something could be done.

The US needs to go through a 12-step program. I believe the first step is acknowledgement.

I chose to contrast with Koreans, Japanese, and Mexicans because those are three of the four other nations I feel myself experienced enough to judge. I accidentally left out Peru, which I would have included.

And I would say your experience is lacking. You might want to check out the Hispanic gangs that hang around LA, San Diego, the border areas, Phoenix, Dallas, San Antonio and about every other major city. Or how about the Japanese gangs that are visible in the SeaTac area of Washington. All have problems. It seems you have disenfrancied yourself from your neighbors

Generalization after generalization. Must be a crappy place where you live. You really need to get out and tour the nation some more. I wonder why my child gets decent grades if all us parents are so bad.

Generalizations are sterotypes and are often the groundwork for racist and bigotary.

Even if only half of the US population are poor parents, it's still a crisis. If you're personally a good parent, you can feel special.

Tsk Tsk - your fail again.

It's funny that you don't seem to complain about generalizations of other cultures as much as your own.

You would be incorrect - mention a generalization of another culture and I would inform you that your are generalizing that culture. I guess you have missed a few threads about muslims and the Islamic culture.

Rural people may be more selfless in their childrearing (let's hope so). However, if urban parenting is worse, we're still talking about a majority of the US population.

Again incorrect - 300 million people in the United States - I am willing to bet that half live in the rural - small town environment

That is because people don't understand committment. Look yourself in the mirror before stepping into the committment of marriage and child rearing. If you can't see yourself committed to that task for the rest of your life, don't enter into it. The crisis comes from our generation - you know the selffish people you are complining about that seem to fit your model of life. I wonder if you are experiencing a guilt complex from your own past behaviors and life.

The US is in crisis. I wish I could say otherwise, but I see it everywhere I go. I see it in the schools; I see it on the trains and buses; I see it in the politics; I see it in the workplace; I see it in traffic. If they would only analyse the problems objectively and take the bitter pills that could improve the situation, rather than running into a church and throwing reactionary politics at the problems, something could be done.

So reactionay politics - lol - most of your posts are just that, reactionary politics based upon generalizations and false impressions.

I'm talking about people in Japan, Korea, Peru, and Mexico (or temporary immigrants to the US), not hyphenated Americans! By listing American problems, you are adding credence my point.

Generalizations are sterotypes and are often the groundwork for racist and bigotary.
If you said that Americans speak English, or that they eat a lot of fast food, or that they watch a lot of TV, it would be a generalization, but not racist or bigoted. They either illustrate a conventional habit or a popular trend.

If you say that Americans are gaining weight, it doesn't mean 100% of all Americans are heavier than a year ago, it means that the total number of fat Americans is increasing. But it's a useful generalization, because it must be dealt with.

Who is hyphenated them - not I. It seems you have a problem understanding and writing your points. And you might want to check a little more into the news out of those areas of the world also. Now that's a worrying article.

For example, 30 per cent did not know in which direction the sun set, a proportion that rose to 73 per cent for city kids.
