I'm playing as the Turks (GA, early, Hard) and am right in the middle of fighting the Horde...their initial invasion has been blunted and it's now 1243, I've reconquered Khazar and confined them to Kiev, Pereslavyl and a couple of other adjoining provinces...they're almost done for, and the Khan now has Coward and Bad Attacker vices, but my mate tells me that after a while they get reinforced. If so, where and how many can I expect? And most importantly, when?
No, they don't get reenforced so once they are out their out.

I've never seen them get reinforcements, though they do occasionally have rebels join them.

oh. well, I'd better give my mate a good slap for scaring me...! I assume they can re-emerge like any other faction though?
thanks Budwise.

They did get reinforcements in STW though.
And yes they can re-emerge.

Is it ever possible to play as the Golden Horde, or are they eternal NPC?

You can play them two ways. The first is some cheat (I don'tknow, never used it) that changes your faction in game. The second way is the go into star pos file in lte and turn mongols into a major faction. Some mods like Xl and probably BKB allow you to play mongols in late. Usually the horde goes into debt on its own but an aggressive player could manage just fine.
A third possible way that involves yet more modding I havn't ever heard of anyone doing nor tried myself is to make the high period start in 1231 (the year the mongols show up) or the one year earlier and make them a major faction. I don't know what would happen but I'd give it an 85% chance of crashing the game or the game not starting up.
You can actually do this for the pontificate too. (Maybe rebels too, not sure if they're treated as a faction in the posstart file, if so you probably could)
