Makedon Victorious - painting from one of royal tombs in Vergina - from left personifications of conquered lands: Italia, Greece, Asia, Africa

Fragments of work of Ptolemaios of Edessa:

[...] In the 4th year of 125th olimpiade, at the beginning of the winter Antigonos gathered all his man and allies. He gathered 1000 cavalrymen and 5000 infantry, mostly from Thessaly. Then he moved from Demetrias marching north. He headed through Pelasgitois across mountains called Kynoskefalai. He fell on Larissa as eagle on its prey and from here he marched through Pieria crushing Pyrrou posts on the way. He didn't care about the cold, the snow, the wind - he marched like Aleksandros chasing Darius. We have to assume that Gods were with him as he arrived in Ajgai in the middle of snow storm. Nobody was on the walls and at first nobody opposed the army. Garnissoned in city Galatians tried to fight but dispersed in city were killed one by one.
Here Antigonos allowed his men to rest for three days and sent Hypaspistai with military escort to deliver orders to many cities in Thessaly and Makedonia. He also called Makedonoov for the beginning of spring to meet in Ajgai. For the rest of the winter Antigonos was marching and freeing cities from epeirote garnissons. [...]

{Antigonos} addressed Makedoon with this words:
"Ho Makedones! Companions! Brothers! Year ago some of you betrayed me. I will not blame you. I will only say: Look at the pillaged cities! Look at Temples burned to the ground! Look at the tombs of our ancestors, great kings! Look at they're bones exposed to sun and rain! Look at all of this and ask yourselves: Were we right? Is this Pyrros the same one that claimed to be our friend and Megas Aleksandros closest kin? If so, why he could stand destruction of the Tombs? Why he hadn't avenge this? I say you, it is not that Pyrros any more! He became barbarian, just like Galatians he command and stationed in Ajgai. He became gold-thirty! He plunders even the most sacred places to get more gold!
Now I ask you. Everyone of you. Who will you choose as your Basileos? Savage barbarian plundering temples and graves of his own ancestors? Or the man who led you to the victory over Galatians? He with whom you freed Makedon from barbarians? Son of the great Demetrios? Choose now!"

Then he left the field and closed in palace. Everyone rushed there shouting that he should become their Basileos again, but Antigonos allowed nobody to enter the palace so the crowd stood outside crying and shouting. Then king allowed few men to enter and those beg him to accept the title. After some time went to them and accepted to be their king and Makedones promised support.

Antigonos started from regrouping and reiforcing armies. He also sent engineers to old mines to reopen the{m}[...]

[...]summer, just after 126th olimpiade ruler of Pontus sieged Sinope. [...] Krestonia and Bisaltia rebelled against Antigonos. He was fighting in Paionia with many successes. At last he sieged theyre chieftain in Sardika. They had army of 800 hoplites, 1600 peltasts, 1600 warriors called Drapanai wielding huge falxes and 1200 javelineers. Battle was long and bloody but Antigonos was victorious. 20 Hetairoi, 220 Thessalians, 540 hoplites and 110 gimnetes died fighting in Paionia and another 164 men were severely wounded but they recovered thanks to Asklepios. Antigonos stayed there for next 2 months securing the land and crushing last points of resistance. [...]

[...]during autumn Spartans gathered troops and in just before winter Pylenor Kolphonios with more than 8500 men includind 4000 hoplites laid siege to Akrokorinthos. After getting this terrible news Alykoneus started gathering army in Athens. Then moved past Isthmus with 1830 cavalry including 1330 Hetairoi and 3940 infntry including 1600 hoplites.

Pylenor's army was sitting two camps - Arkadians, Argeans and Achaeans - 2400 hoplites and same number of gimnetes were sieging the fortress while Pylenor with 210 Hippeis, 1600 hoplites from Lakonike, 800 Eleian peltasts and 1200 gimnetes fortified on hill about 6 stadia from them. Pylenor prepared plan to attack makedonian camp before morning meal. It had good chance of success but was spoiled by Akrotas of Mantineia, comander of siege force. He wanted to get all fame for himself so moved earlier. Guards from Akrocorithos saw him leaving camp and sent information to Alykoneus, who prepared forces but stayed hidden from Akrotas. Pylenor seing allies on the move also left the camp, but was not able to reach the battle fast enough.

Alyconeus marched from the camp when greeks were near, charging gimnetes with all his cavalry. Suprised, they hadn't even chance to use javelins but were smashed from the field. Hoplites also got disrupted and when Alykoneus phalanx with akontistai attacked they started to waver. Then cavalry, returning from prusiut attacked from the back resulting in complete disruption and flee in which almost all men died or fall prisoners. Also korinthou garnisson - 2250 hoplites and 2400 gimnetes arrived.

When Pylenor saw this disaster he fled and his whole army with him. Hetairoi and Thessalians reached two groups of hoplites from Lakonike numbering 1600 men. To greatest shame for theyre people those men didn't put much fight and surrendered when saw they can't run. Makedones lost in the battle 10 cavalrymen and 50 infantry.

After this victory Alyco{neus} [...]
