Think l would like to say is that l would like units that are hidden in forests not to be visible when moving in the forest thus making forest cover a bit more helpful.

The human eye can pick up motion pretty well.
The forests in the maps are not that heavy that it would completely hide a group of samurai. So the fact that a unit is not moving allows it to blend into the surroundings and stay hiden. The second the unit starts to move it loses that blending factor and is much more easily seen.
Have you ever played paint ball? The best tactic is to pick a spot where you have a good field of fire and wait motionless for the enemy to come to you. Even if they have camoflage (sp?) their motion makes them easy to see.
So I think it's fairly realistic that units become more visible when they are moving in the forest than when they are still.

also, you must keep in mind that this is a rather large group of men, anywhere from 60 to 120 in most cases, so that sort of movement is bound to be visible. Smaller units of troops (say, that unit of three monks carried over from a previous battle) might be technically visible, but often won't register enough screen movement (banners flying, etc.) for an opposing human player to spot when he's panning around looking for ambushes.

Yes, the forests in STW are generally sparse. Not great stands of trees but actually just clumps of trees. So, when playing don't think forests equal great stands, think Forest...Forest Clumps..hehehe

I always thought that Japan (at least in the Age of War) was a very densely forested place. So shouldn't the forests be very concealing?

Shogun may have limited forests but is some maps there are in some very cool places. Most of the times there are best for the defender. Ninjas are goign to be invisible while moving int he forests, both sword saints http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/biggrin.gif

Working on being more succint, Tenchi? http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/wink.gif
I like Shogun's forests all the more because units are exposed with movement. It makes you pause to think when the enemy moves in a slightly unexpected direction... should you chance losing the element of surprise to charge now and react before he outmaneuvers your ambush, or should you stay put and hope that your forest advantage will protect you? Little decisions like that can make a big difference, and if it were possible to shift around inside the forest while still remaining stealthy, they just wouldn't come up.

Oh the lament of tree lovers everywhere, Shogun doesn't represent 16th century Japan adequately....THANK GOD!!!!
Man trees are a pain in the arse when you got to get thru them http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/frown.gif Even if they are just clumps http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/wink.gif

Yeah, Shogun's forests are rather difficult to pass through, yes. It just seems like forests drive your poor little soldiers crazy. Those damned forests especially slow down cavalry. Those Cav move like constipated Naginata when they're in a forest. I mean, geeze... forests! Who likes these forest things?
Forest.

Forest good...slow cav in forests even better! Imagine trying to navigate thru a forest on a horse carrying a however many feet long spear and staying in formation? Impossible!
Now my pet peeve is that other units also slow down as well, surely ND and WM should mover faster than they already do? And unit placement is sooooo tough! Grrrr...
But that just adds to the tactical dimension..fun fun fun!!

Yes indeed. Forest is great for defence and slowing down those calvaries. Especially in a province like Shinano or Kaga. I bet the Mongols will have a tough time moving through these trees and tree clumps.
