Hey guys, name's Glaucus, glad to meet you all and to be a part of this forum. I don't have any experience with graphics or modding or skinning or anything, but I like to play RTW alot, though BI didn't really do it for me. Then again, I didn't really give it a chance, so I'm loading it up again right now, maybe it'll be better this time. I like to think of myself as a good player, but I am far better at the Campaign Game then actual battles. I can pretty much defend anything, but attacking is not my forte. I hope to improve on that, thanks for reading.

Welcome, Glaucus.~

If you look around you should be able to find some help with attacking.

Welcome!

I'm pretty much in the same boat as yourself, I've only ever completed a single campaign in BI, this was a Roxolani one on VH / VH I think.

As for attacking, well in my opinion this comes naturally ~D For example, study an enemy's unit positioning, look for weaknesses, then with a cavalry unit in wedge formation, punch a hole through the enemy's lines. Bring up your heavy infantry quickly to exploit this breech your cavalry have just made.

What I do sometimes is to move your units close to the enemy line so you can attack them without actually attacking first. You can lure them in with skirmishers and archers. Sometimes this doesn't work so even if you have to attack you can charge in and play it as a defensive battle like you normally would.

yea thats what i usually do if I have to attack, pretend I'm defending and force them to attack, but more often then that I style my campaign game to fit my play style. I'll put armies on enemy trade routes and such, and they'll have to attack me. Also, I'll almost always wait out a siege, not assault, since waiting forced them to charge when I can procceed to massacre them.

I very much like BI, partly because I mainly play multiplayer and now I just feel without the phalanxes it just sort of opens the game up a little more. Not sure why I think that, I just do lol. Also I like the balance, there is no overpowered Egypt and Rome isn't able to field units of urban superheroes anymore. So yeah, from the battles side I prefer BI.

I have done a few BI campaigns, notably Saxons, Alemanni and Vandals. They where fun, mainly because I just liked to rip into the WRE and pull the empire down. Saxons and Alemanni are well suited to do this due to their starting position, meanwhile the horde factor of the Vandals lets them charge straight to Rome :D

Definatly for me the hordes added a very nice new feature to the campaign map. Something that meant even if you where a superpower (IMO, in standard Rome when you got 20 provinces you had won, it was jsut a matter of time from there on. I have started like 3/4 campaigns I just got bored with and didn't finish in rome because I had the game won by 20, why bother getting 50?.) you still have to keep on your toes.

So yeah, fan of BI here. Nice to here you enjoying defending, although such is the nature of Rome that you didn't actually comment on your open battle skills, this IMO highlights another problem I have with Vanilla, the small provinces mean it's jsut a siege fest, you go for ages with no real big open field battle. So I understand why you didn't mention it, I mean the open field battles are unfortunately minimal at best. (this was partially remedied by the bigger provinces in bi, though I say only partially)

Anyway, good luck in your quest to improve attacking. I like to pummel the walls with artillery, this should take down units they have on walls and also it'll mean you can just walk straight in. The downside is when you actually have the city you have to pay for repairs lol.
