View Full Version : A database of all released RTW mods for the Org?

Hi all,

We have recently acquired the ability to have a special section of the site to be a properly categorised and searchable listing of mods. The only difficulty is getting the time to collate all the information on the huge numbers of mods out there.

All each entry needs is a short description, a link to its download, a link to its discussion thread and a thumbnailed screenshot or image. But obviously there are a lot of entries!

Fortunately there are resources available such as oaty's list here (https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showthread.php?t=47830) and the previous Modding News Roundups available.

If people think such a thing would be a useful resource for the Org and have a little spare time to make it happen then please get in touch.

Could not a member of each mod submit the required information in the format necessary? The proper categorisation sounds great.

That would be good, but not all mods released are made by a team (indeed relatively few are) and many modders are not with in the community. This really just needs a few helpful members with a little time on their hands.

I am sure that if it was well put together and promoted that many mods would be very interested in submitting their info ;) Start it off with those who frequent the Org to provide a good visual of what it looks like and of the desirability to be listed therein....

As I say, that would be cool, but it would still be good to have a couple of people willing to help with the back-catalogue of mods already released whose developers are perhaps no longer with the community or not actively supporting their mod.

Well i'd be willing to do the info for my mod, and there is a similar thread at TWc that lists many mods.

By Epistolary Richard
https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showthread.php?t=46728
Client Kingdoms expands the original game by bringing a fresh new dynamic to the player’s relationship with their conquered territories. Defend them and govern them well and – from time to time – you will be offered the chance to recruit a small army of their local troops, including their unique specialists.

Use them wisely however, as you have no means of replenishing their numbers unless your clients offer you more.

Please note: The developer of this mod does not require permission for it to be used as part of other public modifictions. Please however include any proper credit and notify him via PM of any other use. Please consult the readme file for any other modders work used and consult them direct for permission.

-originally developed by Atilla Reloaded, currently being continued by a small team of dedicated individuals (not a whole army of modders)

FORUM:http://www.twcenter.net/forums/showthread.php?t=40676

the game focuses on balancing historical accuracy with gameplay. It includes a complete reskin of all factions including more historical units for Romans, Picts, Saxons, Franks, Sassanids. It also includes a new map and new buildings. All BI factions are playable except WRR, ERR, slaves, and the Berbers, Alemanni, and Saxons can horde. Campaign starts at 407AD

BTW: Oaty's list is woefully out of date:no:any moderator care to update it?

ER,

I do not know what the final database will look like but should there be a limit for the size of the "description"? Also, can as-of-yet unfinished mods be listed as long as they have a demo out? (that might be a good rule of thumb to stop mods never likely to be finished from being listed).

I'd also suggest a categorisation: major (new campaign map), minor (no new or only slightly edited campaign map); historical - roman-era, historical - other, fantasy

I'm happy to update it, but I don't have the time to pull the information together (which is rather the central point of this thread ). I'm happy to edit in anything people prepare for me.

I do not know what the final database will look like but should there be a limit for the size of the "description"?

Yeah, descriptions should just be summaries, not full readmes. To give you an idea, here's one I've written for the BI All Factions mod to give you an idea. It's a good size, I wouldn't want to go much beyond it.

"This mod allows you to play as all of the factions within BI. This includes emergent factions where, instead of changing the game so that they start with a territory, the game switches to auto-pilot until the faction emerges when you take over - so you can control the faction just as it appears in the vanilla game.

If you want to play as an emergent faction then you must start the game as the slave faction and click on specific cities to bring up the correct advisor. Full details in the readme."

Also, can as-of-yet unfinished mods be listed as long as they have a demo out? (that might be a good rule of thumb to stop mods never likely to be finished from being listed).
There has to be something to download to be listed, so if a mod doesn't even have a demo out it's not going to be there. Otherwise, each entry should be to the latest version of each particular mod - so for example All Factions v1.2 would replace v1.1, though v2 would get a separate listing because it's for BI1.6 whereas the earlier one was for BI1.4

Direct hotlinking the file would be counterproductive, since I make lots of quick updates, which would mean that download link in this page would be outdated too quickly.

I don't like direct hotlinks anyway - all the other links just go through to a Downlead thread which I think is for the best.

It is best to go through the mod download thread/mod forum so that people get more info on the mod before downloading.

Not in terms of a hotlink, no, your forum link is good for the 'Discuss the mod here' line, but I'd like something like this for the 'Download' link

So the download is very obvious for people clicking through the link. :beam:

This is a very good idea. A data base that is searchable would save heaps of time sifting through forums, or search results of forums.

Can I suggest that the version of RTW that the mod is for is listed as well in the format? ; as a standard. Sometimes the only way to determine if the mod is for RTW or BI is with looking at the unit descriptions. Bit frustrating :S

Screen shots are good too. I personally don't download a mod unless I see something visual about it along with it's description.

I suggest a map/campaign view shot as well as a few battle shots to give a more general idea of the mod. Not just some new units or whatever.

Anyway, I think this is a great idea and yeah their maybe lists of completed mods already but they seem incomplete in the info they give, and lack a good localised search option.
