View Full Version : No experience gain.
Units and generals are gaining no experience after mutiple battles, makes all units pretty expendable...But I would like to see my legions increase in strength over time...

I was under the impression that gaining unit experience was hardcoded...?
Never experienced this, I have several generals with 3 gold chevrons in my current Seleucid campaign.
It's hard to get command STARS. I think that's what he's talking about. And it is. THe most command stars I've been able to get on my own in EB is 4.
No, not referring to generals...Just basic unit experience, most I ever gain is 2 bronze chevrons, after enough battles where I should expect double that.

That's hardcoded, we didn't change it.
Eh, exactly my point, its going much slower than normal...guess its just me though.

If it's going slower than normal either your doing something different (in terms of how you're fighting battles) or the random element is just not going your way at all.
How does experience gain work anyways? Is it completely random or does it matter how many enemies are killed by a unit in battle and things like that?

It counts how mant men are killed by individual soliders, and "chevrons" show how much exp statisticaly unit has - this means that some soliders are in fact much more experienced than others within the same unit. There is also some small random gain after each battle.

But when you retrain your unit, there is no experience loss (a unit with 4 units with 3 gold chevs retrained will be a full unit with 3 gold chevs). if each individual soldier has their own exp, why is this true?

From my own experience it actually seems to work as a ratio of kills to men, plus a bonus for just taking part in a battle. There's an LM thread about it I think.

It drops, but not always. I have just retrained 18 men strong unit of Hipp Thessalikoi with one silver and it dropped to 2 bronze
If you have super experienced unit it may have much more exp than needed for 3 gold, so even few men could bring the level up, especially if you retrained them in city giving some exp bonus
You need to brush up your battle tactics. Fight 1:1 or less in your favour odds.
I was thinking about this earlier today. Unless I'm in a real bind and need a large number of troops right away, after a fight I'll normally select the army and hit the M key. This combines all your units of the same type, therefor combining those surviving units instead of diluting a unit with green recruits.
I remember playing vanilla when I first got the game a long time ago, and having an army that just rampaged around gaul putting down rebels, it ended up being an army of very small units with 2 or 3 gold chevrons each. And the auto-calc battles were absurd. The game was probobly on easy though, so fights were very easy, and it was very easy to gain expierience.
I dont think you get much xp for killing routing troops. I've had cav units slaughter hundreds of routing units in a battle, and get no xp, when units who killed less than a hundred in a real fight got chevrons.
Though everything changes when you add in the BARTIX

theres something thats been bothering me about the unit exp, im in the middle of a casse campaign and the chevrons go from red to gold instead of red to silver, it seems to be only cosmetic since there is no leap in damage/defence. was this something that was changed for .74 or is my install messed up?
