View Full Version : making interesting savegames available

Hey guys, allot of people have been uploading their savegames, in order to identify ctdf causes.

I was thinking, since not all of us have masses of time available to build up empires like alexander did, we could make a sticky with some interresting uploaded savegames. You know, campaigns that went very well (i remember a parthian player marching into italy), campaigns that are on an important crossroad, etc. the constant CTD-ing have prevented me from building up anything big. furthest i came was with the macedons where i conquerd illeria, greece, western asia minor, and rhodos.

well, thats just my 2 cents.

If I had my old Makedon campaign, I'd upload it. I miss that campaign ~:(

But yeah, this sounds like an interesting idea to me. It might defeat the purpose of having the early-game so difficult when you can just download someone else's game, but I don't think it will be too bad. Most players seem to like building up their own empire anyway, and some players will enjoy the change of scenery with someone else's savegame.

I don't think it would be an issue of someone just downloading a savegame and playing rather than just bragging rights - which is cool.

I think it's a good idea to be honest... There would be no point in uploading, say, a campaign that you've been playing for 3 months where you own 1/4 of the map and can recruit all of the best troops... But if people uploaded campaigns such as, for example, the one i started 2 days ago as the Romani...

I own all of Italy below Arretium and Ariminum, all of Sicily, have a governor in all but 1 city, a small army in Sicily to use incase of an invasion from the sea by Carthage (very unlikely but possible), 2 large armies in forts along border with the barbarians in northern Italy and a small but good quality fleet blockading Carthages' port since they refuse a ceasefire... Someone may want to start a Romani campaign from where i left off since it would cut like 6 or 7 hours of gameplay from the begginning, but i haven't done too much.. You still have the polybian reforms and then later the marius reforms, also building the Roman empire to look forward to...

So yeah i think a sticked thread with links to upload saved games to would be a fairly good idea.

Speaking of savegames, why has noone started a PBM yet? Or have they? I mean, EB is perfect for a PBM.

(I can't do it, because I, to be perfectly honest, suck. :embarassed:)

PBM = Play By...............Mail?!

Well, he means turn play, right?

One player plays, say, 5, 15, 30 turns or whatever, then passes on the save-game to another player ad infinitum. Each player posts an After Action Report along with the new save-game, hopefully with cool screenshots or just text descriptions of what happened, perhaps include some RPG stuff, and you got yourself an opportunity to see the campaign unfold into AD without having to sit through 50.000 hours of gameplay.

And there's the whole "team" effort thing and all, you know...like a..uhh balloon party! :balloon2:

Hmm, what's a balloon party? :balloon2: :help: :balloon2:

Actually, the best PBMs I have seen are based on the lifetime of the rler, not number of turns. That way, each ruler has his own distinct "personality."

Someone try it... it should be entertaining. :2thumbsup:

Ah i couldn't do a PBM... I hate the thought of anybody but me ruling my empire making decisions i do not like etc... But i would love to see other people do one based on a faction leader perhaps or playing 5 years each...

One based on faction leader and with preset rules beforehand (such as Swordmaster's Roman Guide for example) this idea would be great fun, and I would love to see the AAR for it.

You could always take it a step further. In Medieval I used to get myself into a particularly difficult predicament and send the savegame to one of my mates; he'd send one back later. Made for some fun challenges.

i think it would be even better to make interesting scenarios, or everyone start as the same faction and see who can have the most money, after say 40 turns?

Djurre
03-28-2006, 15:42
well, what ever, i's just like to play as KH, after they burned pella to the ground. or Carthage, after they secured their holdings in southern italy, or as a unified gaul. etc etc. I'm not a big fan of the eastern factions, because of the massive horse archer rebel armys i encounter there.

but still, the idea is ok, no ?

The possibility was raised some time ago in the Throne Room (the .Org's PBM forum), but I argued against it but because EB was too unstable and too incomplete. The instability has since been adressed, but there are many factions yet unfinished. Still, I would love to play an EB PBM once it is ported to 1.5.

Anyone want my Armenian/Hayasadan campaign? I'm contemplating putting it on http://www.axifile.com/. I've only really just started, and it's on M/M , but it's a real challenge. Only on medium and I've been fighting for survival from the off. Defeated a huge rebel army, 3:1 in their favour ~D (no bragging intended). Anyways, I've got out of a tough position, so anyone wanting a relatively easy start? 4 provinces conquered, stable economy etc. BTW large respect to those playing on VH for this faction, I lasted about 2 years...

I played a VH\M campaign with Hayasdan and after conquering the three provinces had to deal with the Seleukids encroaching on my territory. I tried to hold them off but in the end their offence was too much and I ended the alliance with them. It all went down hill from their and I had to play a stalling battle with HA and archers in the mountains against two almost full stacks. Needless to say I thoroughly lost (but not after wiping out one of their full stacks).

Most fun campaign ever!

O how true. You never get complacent, that's for sure. For anyone who wants it, my M/M Hayasdan campaign's here http://www.axifile.com?2238818, very early stages however, but a good starting block i reckon. I've decided to create a VH/M Hayasdan campaign report thingy, purely to see if I can do it on VH, and to show the world just how cool this faction is. First, to download InfranView...

It's meant for 0.72 beta though, not sure if it'll work with the patched versions of EB. Nevertheless, I'll post it up if anyone wants to take a look.

And yeah I'm the crazy guy who marched his parthian armies into roman territory. :laugh4:

I would play barbarian factions more, but you can't build roads or academys...even Semi-barbarians..
AND I'm pretty sure the Gauls built paved roads

And could the EB team let them build both.

I'm at 199BC and have the polybian reforms, playing the 0.74 patch. I'll try to upload my save game for you now.

Some notes before i go and do that.

Sagesta, Arretium, Ariminum, Roma, Capua and Canusium are your main recruiting cities, all have Martis temples which give at least +2 morale, i think Rome and Arretium have huge martis temples which give +3. All of the cities are at green happiness, low or normal taxes (except for Dalminion which brings in the dough) with daily or monthly games, this helps stop your bank going too high and generals become extravagant beauty loving losers. You own all of Italy (Except for Mediolanium as they are your allies), all of Sicily, Karali and Alalia, Sagestica, Dalminion and 2 more cities along the west coast of the Greek peninsula. At war with the epirotes but they have only 3 cities and are flatlining on income, their capital city is under siege by the faction heir.

You have 4 family members capable of commanding a legion... 2 along the western coast of Greece (your faction leader and faction heir, 2 command stars each), one in a fort to the north of Sagestica with a legion and one in Sagestica as a governor. You have 4 full legions altogether, 2 in western Greece, 1 north of Sagestica and one in northern Italy without a commander. Every city has a governor and you have a transport fleet camped at Alalia and one to ferry men from Italy to Greece and back. Going to try and find somewhere to upload it now.

Oh and it's on VH/M.

Warlord-11 I just downloaded your Aaediu campaign and its pretty freekin big, but did you use the money cheat for it, or did you fight all the battles to do this? Just wondering because if you did do this all by your self, im very interested, could you like tell me how dificult it was to conquer thew Sweboz, and the Romani. Like about your battles. It just interests me. Ive been continuing it with not so much succes. have you got any further,The getai seem to be smashng their way through it now though..

Just an idea for people uploading savegames: try zipping the file, it will make it vastly smaller. Which would be good, since axifile seems to be downloading VERY slowly for me...

Anyway, I'll see if I can get an interesting Makedon game into the mix. Maybe I'll go gung-ho on the Ptolemies and let everyone else try to dig themselves out ~D

No, I never used cheats. I might have auto-calulated a couple of battles but nothing big. Although I must admit, I had a couple of battles with a full stack in a city and like one unit attacking my besieging army. I just killed the one unit and the entire stack (which I hadn't fought) would magically die. I didn't try to get into those situations though. I started this on 0.73. In 0.73 the Sweboz didn't seem to expand much (most of the cities near them had full stacks in them), although right before I installed the patch they took there fourth (I think) city. I was allied to them, yet they attacked for no reason. I punished them with utter anilattion. :skull: :2thumbsup: The Romans were focusing on the South, so by the time we fought, I had Mendinolum, Segesta, Bonnea, and Pavatium, giving me a place to retrain and recruit units. The Romans also beytraed me, but I had prepared for it and crushed them. It took awhile though. I haven't played much since I uploaded the save, but what basically happened was the Iberians and Epirots bribed a bunch of towns which then revolted back to me.

What is a PBM?
Play-by-Mail. Basically each player plays for a determined duration (ten turns, ten years, one faction leader's reign) and then e-mails the game to the next. To see some PBM's in action, visit the Throne Room (https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/forumdisplay.php?f=38). The Reunification write-up thread (https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showthread.php?t=60372) is well worth a read.

The others did not have anywhere near as organized a system as the celts did. Or at least this is what our coordinators for these factions agree upon and have told me (I prepared the building images and did the building code changes for them).

See my Egypt invasion thread for details if you haven't already.

You have only a small army in Egypt since it has been whittled down to almost nothing and also only a small army in Makedonia garrisoned in Pella, although nobody attacks there since you are allied to the Dacians for many many years.

Chrysoloras (he who conquerethed most of Egypt) is garrisoned in a city just south of Memphis and Dionysios is outside Alexandreia with a few units, his army is being recruited from Alexandreia and Memphis, your two main recruitment cities in Egypt. Paraitonian can also recruit some decent levies and mercenaries are usually plentyful. You have units all over Egypt garrisoned in each city, you may want to bring them to the front and get cheaper units down there for garrison purposes.

Carthage in the west has some huge armies there but nothing you can't handle once you have an army, although you may lose a city or two before that army is raised unfortunately, i could do nothing about the Carthies at an earlier time due to lack of funds. Ptolemaics refuse a ceasefire, Your allies are Dacia and Seleukia. Chrysoleros' son is garrisoned in Sardis (north of Pella) just so you know, he has a command star and is the only good general in Greece, use him if you wish to expand anywhere in that area.

Hope you enjoy it, i certainly have enjoyed making it.

It is 0.74 and has the latest traits update.

I have a request, does anybody have a Casse campaign in which they have at least conquerd all of Mainland Britain. I want to play my own Casse game, and have already conquered all of britain and ireland before but had to port to .74 so lost the file. I would really apreciate it if anyone would just make it available on Axi-file or somesuch download site, because im going to put my Ptolemaic save in I just have to get to a certain point.
