Have anyone played any of those factions?

do anyone know if theres anything changed with them from v1.4 to 1.6?

I played Celts when i had v1.4, their berserkers ruled the fields. they kept on killing till they died and they never got out from their berserk.

Now i play Lombardi v1.6, their berserkers kills lots and lots of enemies too, the only difference is that they dont always get into berserk when telling them to. And sometimes they run up to the enemy and gets out of berserk and then they get slaughterd.

do they stop go frensy when they get exhausted?

IMO Lombardi berserkers are pansies comparing to Celts berserkers

actually a good tip... make 2 armies of berserkers and let them have it at each other....

I think Celts are cooler to use then Lombards so would say Celt Berserkers are better.

I've checked it out before, and the Hounds are only really any better against very well armoured enemies (try putting Lombards against Hounds). Apart from fighting Graal Knights I'd go for Lombard berserkers every time as they are simply better. (And why fighting as the Celts is cooler than fighting with other factions I will never understand, I dont think fighting as the RB is cool just because I am British).

EDIT : Yep I have noticed the berserkers getting out of berserk too, but only when the AI controls them. And it seems to happen with all berserkers, I think the AI just sends them berserk too far away so they have chilled out before they get within range of a waiting enemy.

The reason I think the Celt units are cooler is because they are the unique old school unchanged since the start of civilization units.:book: :skull:

I also have not been able to play Lombards since the game crashes whenever I select them, so you can say I like the Berserkers who work for me better then those who are against me:2thumbsup:

Fair point Horatius. Does it crash when you choose other Barb factions too?

Whenever I select a civilization that is suppose to be unplayable (Other then Celts and Berbers) the game crashes on me.

So I can play some Barbarians like Franks, but not others like the Burgundii.

Patch is the key. Go for 1.6...

The Lombards are definately the more powerful of the two, though they were both toned down in 1.6. I did think some of the stat differences between them in 1.4 were a bit unfair though, notably that Lombards have a higher Armor value than Hounds, despite the fact that neither of them appear to be wearing any armor whatsoever. The Hounds are actually wearing more than the Lombards IIRC, they have cloaks. ~

Really both of them are fantastical and overpowered (in 1.4 at least) but I must admit I prefer the Hounds, because I like Armor-Piercing units, and perhaps the mythological reference.

I would like to play as the Celts and Lombardis, but have not yet been able to make them "playable." What I really don't understand, is "Why would CA even create "unplayable" factions?"

I have read in a few places of do this and that, but thus far have not even been able to bring up the menu to do anything.

If somebody out there would be so kind as to give instructions on "how to do it" from the very first stroke of a key until the "update completed," I, along with several others would be very grateful.

Thank you.

Ok. If you have installed the 1.6 patch, all you should need to do is to enter this file,: Activision\Rome - Total War\bi\data\world\maps\campaign\barbarian_invasion\descr_strat,

where you change this:

playable
huns
goths
sarmatians
vandals
franks
saxons
alemanni
sassanids
empire_east
empire_west
end
unlockable
end
nonplayable
romano_british
celts
burgundii
lombardi
roxolani
ostrogoths
slavs
berbers
empire_east_rebels
empire_west_rebels
slave
end

into this:

playable
huns
goths
sarmatians
vandals
franks
saxons
alemanni
sassanids
empire_east
empire_west
romano_british
celts
burgundii
lombardi
roxolani
ostrogoths
slavs
berbers
empire_east_rebels
empire_west_rebels
slave
end
unlockable
end
nonplayable
end

You move the the unplayable factions from the section of unplayable factions to the section of playable factions.

Edit: The slavs, Roman rebeles and the other emerging factions requires more modding than this.

Disregard that, and change it to this:

playable
huns
goths
sarmatians
vandals
franks
saxons
alemanni
sassanids
empire_east
empire_west
celts
burgundii
lombardi
roxolani
berbers
end
unlockable
end
nonplayable
romano_british
ostrogoths
slavs
empire_east_rebels
empire_west_rebels
slave
end

As you can see, factions that have no starting terrotory should stay unplayable. Otherwise it would need some serious modding (which only some experts could do manually).

celt beserkers are absouletly better just because they look cooler and seem to be better in battle coz they dont wimp out.the lombardi beserkers are stronger stats wise but not as strong mind wise and never seem to stay in the battle as long as celt beserker

Thank you very much Viking and Player 1.

The part I still do not know is, "How do I get to

"Activision\Rome-Total War\" and so forth and so on?

Where do I look? Is it something I can click onto when I put the disc in, or is it a site I go to or what?

I don't mean to sound like a dummy, but in this respect, I have to admit that I probably am one.

Well, to which folder did you installed your game?
Is it "standard":
C:\Program Files\Activision\Rome - Total War

Or some custom game folder like:
D:\Games\RTW

Are the mercenary celt beserkers as good as the original celt beserkers?

I guess so. Just more expensive maybe (Upkeep and Recruit).

after started a new Celt campain i noticed that their berserkers behaved the same as the lombardis after installing v1.6

so the lombardi berserkers are not any pancies anymore

I think the Lombardi Berserkers are better, but I don't know...

Never really played with the Celtic ones.

I did a custom battle, all Celts against all Lombards. The latter won, with a substantial difference. I think 500 dead Celts against 300 Lombards. Also, the Celt ones got out of berserk status, too, and some even routed. Excellent morale my codpiece.

I just looked at the 1.6 stats, and the Hounds have definately been hit hard statwise. IIRC there was a small difference between them and the Lombards in 1.4, in 1.6 it is much more pronounced. Lombards have 14 Attack and 9 Defence, while Hounds have 11 and 5 respectively. They both seem to have the same base morale though, and charge bonus.

They're definately a lot weaker now. Statistically, Gallowglasses are quite a bit stronger than them (although they lack the Berserk ability and have lower morale) Perhaps the disparity is intended to underscore the difference between playable and non-playable factions? (Alemanni can build Lombards)

Don't forget that Hounds have armor piercering maces.
That reduces enemy armor for half.

So it's obvious that lombard will beat hound, since hound main advantage is negated (lombards have no armor).

Maybe better test is to try and see how much is each of them effective against unit of roman comits.

Really only makes a difference against the real heavies of the Roman army. Unless I was fighting against them I'd have to go for the Lombards every damn time, they are simply better all rounders.

And if you test as either Hounds vs Lombards or Lombards vs Hounds the AI will get out of berserk all the time. It is an AI thing, not a unit thing.

Here goes:

* click the Start button in the bottom left corner on your desktop
* click My Computer, this should list all your hard drives, cd/dvd drives and some extra stuff
* go to the C: disk
* now go to ->Program Files->Activision->.... all the way to Activision\Rome - Total War\bi\data\world\maps\campaign\barbarian_invasion \descr_strat.txt
