No offense to the folks at EB, but after looking through the stats file, I found a few things that I didn't quite understand the rationale for. Certain units had similar armor values even though one was leather and the other chainmail. Anyway, I decided to draw up a rough layout for a restating while still keeping with basic EB stats:

For those of you not familiar with the stats, the armor is the value used for both defense against melee and ranged attacks, it does not decrease with fatigue. Defensive skill only works for melee, it is affected by fatigue ( I presume). I didn't list defense skills because I decided that the best way to mirror it and keep the killing slow was to set it as the same as the attack value of the main melee weapon. Defensive skill does reflect ability to parry after all, see my logic? Shield is only armor for the front. Bow attacks are generally higher cause of the higher armor.

For a few sample stats:

Roman republican legionnaire:
armor: 17
defensive skill:10
attack: 13
shield: 10

Greek Hoplite (with Kopis):
amor: 10
defensive skill: 9
attack: 9
shield: 7


ARMOR

Base:

Unarmored: 1
Jerkin: 3
Reinforced Leather: 6-9 (-1 defense skill)
Scalemail: 11-13 (-3 defensive skill, -1 offensive skill)
Chainmail: 13-15 (-3 defensive skill, -1 offensive skill)

Modifier:

+1 for face covered (-1 defensive skill)
+1 for metal helm
+3 for metal breast disk
+6 for metal cuirass (-2 defensive skill)
+2 for arm-length metal armor (-1 defensive skill, -1 offensive skill)
+2 for leg-length metal armor (-1 defensive skill unless mounted)
+2 for extra metal shoulder armor (-1 defensive skill)
+3 for barded horses
+8 for cataphract horses

-3 defensive skill for all cavalry units

SHIELD

Base:

Hide/wicker: 2
Wood: 5

Modifier:

-2 for diameters less than forearm length (skirmisher shields)
+3 for full body cover
+1 for thin metal cover layer
+1 for metal rims
+1 for metal shield boss
-1 for phalangite style shields
+1 defensive skill for oval shaped shields

MELEE ATTACK

Base:

Knife: 3
Dagger: 4-7
One-handed spear: 6-10 (spear attribute)
Mace: 7-11 (armor piercing, -3 defensive skill)
Falcata/kopis: 7-13
Two-handed spear: 8-11 (spear attribute, +2 defensive skill)
Axe: 8-13 (axe attribute, - 4 defensive skill)
Gladius: 8-14
Longsword: 7-12 (+2 defensive skill)
Two-handed sword/falx/hammer: 15-18 (+3 defensive skill, armor piercing)

Modifier:

+2 for cavalry
+6 for phalanxes

RANGED ATTACK

Base:

Simple bow: 3-5
Composite bow: 6-8
Javelin: 9-11
Sling: 2-3

Modifier:

+2 for significant recurve
-2 for mounted use
+3 for pilum
+4 for all metal javelin
+1-2 for extra heaviness in javelin
