CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Three men have been arrested on charges of performing castrations on apparently willing participants in a sadomasochistic "dungeon" in a rural house, authorities said Friday.
"It's extremely bizarre," District Attorney Michael Bonfoey said in a telephone interview. "It's incredible the amount of ways that people can find to run afoul of the law."
Sheriff's investigators said Richard Sciara, 61, Danny Reeves, 49, and Michael Mendez, 60, admitted performing at least eight surgeries, including castrations and testicle replacements, on six consenting clients over the past year. None of the three is licensed to practice medicine, officials said.
The suspects, all residents of the house in Haywood County, in western North Carolina, where the surgeries were allegedly performed, were arrested Thursday. They were being held on $150,000 bond each and could make their first court appearances Monday, Bonfoey said.
The sheriff's office had investigated reports of sadomasochistic acts at the house in 2004, but concluded there was nothing illegal going on because the participants appeared to be willing adults.

Performing surgery without being a doctor, that's a criminal label I can understand. But castration? How can the guys be brought up on charges of voluntary castration? Is it somehow more illegal to perform a castration than some other unlicensed procedure?

I'll never understand the castration enthusiasts, but this kind of thing is apparently more and more common, especially in Mexico, where Americans can have it done and no one will know.

If you make it clear to the person you're performing surgery on you're not medically qualified, why should this be illegal?
Indeed, if all of the participants were willing it seems odd that they have committed any crime at all.

I imagine that since this seems to have been an extreme sadomasochistic group, it has something to do with undergoing the ultimate humiliation for a man.
Historically however, many priesthoods that required members to be eunuchs traded the knowledge and power gained by initiation for infertility/lack of sexual desire. There's a sect in Hindu India which breaks initiates' penises for the same reasons. There are a number of other examples of reasoned choice.
Castrati singers (although children when castrated and therefore not entirely informed decision makers) became very rich and famous in the Renaissance to early 20th century and the operation was much sought after for a young lad with a sweet voice.
So there are reasons, perhaps alien to us in this century, but not entirely unheard of as a positive decision.

Because it sets a precedent that will inevitably lead to bad consequenses. Can't afford an artificial knee? I'll do it for $100! Oh and for the record, it's on your own risk.

I disagree. I see something similar happen over here with contact lenses. You can buy them in drug stores where the quality isn't very good, and where people are not instructed properly on how to clean lenses and how long you can wear them, etc. I know people who had their eyes permanently messed up because of such over-the-counter lenses, and I think that selling lenses should be reserved for qualified opticians, and surgery for qualified surgeons. Yes, that is government parenting, and I'd fully endorse that.

Yeah, that's the concern I would have. People let their fantasy get in the way of reality far too often, and this is irreversible.
I think it's an extension of the "getting kicked in the balls" fantasy, maybe combined with some sort of feminization. Stripped of the last vestige of manhood. Or it could be it's own thing, I don't really know...and I don't particularly feel like researching it.
