View Full Version : German Bodyguard over powered.
German General units are tougher than Gestae. I surrouned a General with 5 units of triarii, pelted him with javelins, and hit him with 1 round of calvary.
The guard fought till the last man, which of course was the general. I knocked him down 9 times before I killed him. He was engulfed by at least 500 units.
AutoResolving battles against an army with more than 1 german general unit, regardless of the odds being in your favour, almost always results in a huge loss for the player.
They never flee. German Generals have numerous stars, are impossible to assassinate, and do not route...ever. They chew up calvary, be it my general or regular, like nothing else.
I'm playing on VH battles and H map.

The stats are balanced for Medium battles so on VH it may be VH to kill some units ... ~;)
Yeah don't play on very hard if you want realistic battles the AI gets a whole lot of attack and moral bonuses and on top of that the EB AI generals get huge command star bonuses making it dam near impossible to get anyone routing until his dead.
Personally I play on medium battle difficulty seems to feel right just attack with a smaller force than the defender and its a real challenge.

Yeah, all enemy units are overpowered on VH, there are a bunch of +7 stat bonues.

Play medium and a unit of triarii and then hammer and anvil should rout it.
Is it a challenge on medium? How large are your armies?
If playing on Medium, you should have either half stack or a little over half stack armies for a challenge. 10-15 units. However, Hard provides some fun battles, which most people overlook. Most people either play Medium or Very Hard. Those who play on Hard know what I'm talking about. They still get some bonuses which you have to deal with, but overall it's pretty fun.

I gave hard a go the other day and I couldnt get 20 samnite spearmen to rout even though they where surrounded on 3 sides by hastati and principes :inquisitive:
Now that I think about it more it could have been the command star thing maybe I was a bit hasty, guess i'll have to have a few custom battles on hard to try it out.
This is upsetting to say the least. Any one that's played EB long enough will understand how much sweat and blood was required to carry a game to 133 BC.
I'm fighting almost impossible odds at this point, but am still winning enough battles to carry me through. I've got the Aedui, Sweboz, and Greeks all attacking me. My Roman empire spans all of Italy and a few Provinces up north. Almost every new settlement I take is lost within a few turns to the Greeks, the super power in the game.
It's a vicious game of cat and mouse. The Greeks are able to produce new armies at lighting speed. However, I'm able to fight them off with some success.
But the new Sweboz threat is really getting annoying. I've resorted to exploiting the stupid AI during sieges to keep the Germans at bay. But fighitng countless sieges has really slowed the pace of the game and it's becoming more of a choir than anything else.
I worked so hard to get this far, only to find out that VH battles are grossly in favour of the enemy. I could probably win in the end. My only driving force right now is to expierence a triumph (which has evaded me to no end) and see the next two reforms. Infact, I held out on an early conquest of Europe just to save it for the Polybian troops and Imperial armies. The early game amnesty towards my neighbours is what got me in the situation I'm in now.
Eh theres some tool you can download that can change difficulty, unit sizes etc in game, it was posted somewhere in the forum, maybe you could set your battles to Medium. I can't find it but i remember seeing it somewhere.

yup there's one. Maybe you should lok at the download section of TWC if you can't find it here.
merci! I'm on the hunt for this mod right now.
As thanks maybe you could post your savegame of 113 BC?:laugh4:
Kidding on, it's just that I've never even got to the polybian reforms:embarassed:

You might need an older version for use with 1.2 I don't know.

It is harder then VH on vanilla, due to experience of the general or the rationing and food supplies and ect.
I've successfully changed the game to hard using ROMESAGE. Just don't tamper with the years setting. I changed it to 110 and the game started at 192. Lol, I really want to use the reformed army.

Hey Chester could you report back your findings on hard I might make the change myself from medium. I would appreciate any info.
The only difference so far is that I'm routing ground units a lot quicker when I use a calvary charge.
My armies usually have a large calvary wing, about 500-600 strong. I even got a German Bodyguard to retreat when I surrounded it with two groups of princeps and a calvary charge. On VH that would have not happened.
The game is better imo. I've never played medium on EB so I can't compare the two. But it's much more enjoyable than VH, less frustrating.
I got to 108 BC by setting the RomeSage date to 60AD i think (obviously the 4 seasons affect it, rather than the normal 2). It's quite nice to play around with the reformed units, but it cuts out too large a portion of the game for me.
Right now I need the the date jump. I'm stuck at 128 BC, each turn is taking 35 mins to an hour. I'm fighting the Aedui, Sweboz, and the Greeks. Siege after siege. Battle after battle. It's driving me crazy, I have no room to breath and I really want the 109 reforms.
set it to 60 ad i think thats the one, or close enough
I did. The reformed troops are awesome.
They look so pretty.

Sign of a good mod imo is if it gets people to switch down their old difficulty settings.
That RTW save editor looks useful for testing. Good stuff.
To the guy who is sick of fighting so many battles - Why not abandon cities in Greece and wherever else and just retreat back to the peninsula until the 109 reforms kick in?
