Is there any quantifiable in-game impact to the depth at which you deploy your phalanx?

Anybody beyond the fourth or fifth rank can't reach the front line, but that doesn't make them useless. Real world deep phalanxes had more weight to put into the pushing match (like Epaminondas at Leuctra) but I'm not sure if that is true in RTW. Also there was probably a morale boost in knowing that you had a good deep phalanx of your mates behind you (and an even bigger morale boost if you had a good deep phalanx of your mates in front of you :laugh4: ), but is this the case in RTW?

I have tried my phalanxes at depths from 4 to 12 or so but I can't be sure if there was actually any difference in their performance.

Would it be possible to mod an attack and morale bonus to deep phalanxes?

I think Darthmod has been doing this for a while. You modify weight or something, I'm not sure I really understood, and I don't know if EB has done that or not. The one time I was gonna test to figure it out, I had a unit of hypaspists in the army for fun, and so it crashed (this was a while back). So ultimately, yeah I think it can be done, but I don't know if EB has done it.

You can definitely get a weight effect if you have a bunch of units all squashed up attacking. You can physically push defenders off the town square for example. Not sure if three phalanxs in a narrow, very deep formation side by side is any different from three wide, shallow phalanxs one behind the other though.

You can modify weight, and the 1.5 spear attribute seems to have an effect too, but there's no way to make the game recognized the weight or extra ranks. Basically you can make individual soldiers heavier, and thus formations, but its pretty awkward. Still phalanxs are 'heavier' than normal troops in EB.

What about the morale affect of formations? Does a thin line have lower morale than a deep phalanx?

What about the morale affect of formations? Does a thin line have lower morale than a deep phalanx? Some scholars seem to think it was actually so. However, I don't know what happens it the game (sorta doubt it...)

The game doesn't that that into account at all.
