View Full Version : Pop Up Pope
A quick query re: Papal Re-emergences......
Let's face it from time to time, old mate Popey can be a right pain when you are a Catholic faction....and occassionally one has to well....invade and kill him....
When he re-emerges, does he ALWAYS do so in Rome, or occassionally in the Papal States or elsewhere?
Is there a way to encourage him to pop up elsewhere?
I have only ever seen Roman re-emergences.....but I am but a relative novice in the art of Medieval Total War....

He'll do it in a very closely neighboring state IIRC. But he will always come back and always do so bigger and badder then before.
The papal states are an awesome area to conduct training for an up-and-coming general and a few elite units. Remember to take several stacks, they will dwindle down pretty quick after a few re-emergences.
I've seen him show up in the Papal States, but that's it (aside from of Rome, of course). Doesn't necessarily mean he can't reappear elsewhere, I suppose; I've just never seen it happen myself.
I suppose that is a function of the fact that old mate
Popey rarely (in campaigns I have seen at any rate) ventures outside those two provinces....meaning he has to re-emerge in one of those two...
Having said that, I've got a right aggressive little so-and-so of a pope who kept trying to invade me in my current campaign....
I need a "Pope Control" plan!
Yeah, the Pope generally doesn't move beyond his original two territories. Every once in a while, though, His Holiness gets frisky and decides he's going to take your favorite vineyards for himself. (I'm sure it's just because he doesn't want wine clouding men's minds and leading them to sin. ) It's not terribly uncommon (at least in my games) for the Papacy to take out the Italians and/or Sicilians and conquer the entire Italian peninsula.
I have (on very rare occasions) even seen the Vatican become a superpower. The few times I've witnessed the phenomenon, it was usually precipitated by constant fighting between the HRE and Italians. The prolonged warfare between the two factions sapped their strength, and were therefore unable to resist when the Pope (ever the opportunist!) decided to "intervene". ~D If the French have also been weakened by war (usually with the English/HRE), the Papacy can expand unchecked all the way to the English Channel and Atlantic seaboard.

When I was Italy I wanted a unified penninsula and took over his lands with relative ease.
But I had to keep at least 3 -4 large armies in those provinces because every 20-40 years or so he decides to come on back home and knock down my back door.
I defeat him easily but its kind of annoying but oh well thats what ol popey gets for messing with me:laugh4:
And I believe he always comes back in Rome and in other close provinces sometimes as well.
