If you have ner modded before any want to start a mod of this scale please reconsider, you have no idea of the huge amount of work it will need. Consider the fact that FATW, a mod based on the LOTR books has been in develpment for over a year and half, and they are just approaching the release of the first campaign. And they have a fairly dedicated bunch of very talented modders working on it.

My advice ot you would be to learn how to do the basics of RTW modding scuh as text file editing, look in the scriptorium for some great tutorials, then join a mod team that already exists and help them. This way you will leanr mre as you are part of a team and will have some idea of just how much time and efoort goes into some mods, and how much work it can be.

Personally....I would start with the simpler aspects, and see where you get to. Look closely at the skills you have, and see what you are going to be able to accomplish. If you have never modelled before, don't expect to be making new soldier models any time soon.

You could, though, still do a whole load of test editing!

Choose your factions.... re-name them to fit your particular book titles world...use stock RTW sodliers, but maybe re-paint some skins ( if you are good with photoshop )or just use them as they are. Tutorials exist for this sort of thing, and no special softwar eis required.

Then maybe you could mess with the combat stats to reflect your new unit.

Then...if you can crack that, build a map.... and so on.

Don;t rush in and try and do stuff you can't handle... you will just get fed up and disillusioned. Measured steps...and keep going. You CAN do a mod...it's just a question of keeping a close eye on the reality of what your have the skills to do. Once you start with the stuff I mentioned, you may get interest from a modeller who has an interest in those books...you never know!
