I first tried to install the v0.7.2 Open Beta last night, but that did not work and I only got what seemed to be a title screen that would crash to the descktop whenever I hit a key. So I began think, perhaps I should install the RTW 1.2 patch, so today I decided to unistall everything. I reenstall RTW and download the .exe file for the patch, but when I tried to open that file it said:

"This application has failed to start because MSSS32.DLL was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem"

What should I do? Uninstall Rome Total War again (:wall: )? There has to be something I am doing wrong. Am I just doomed to play the origanal version of Rome for all eternity? :furious3:

:help:

Edit: I unistalled everything, reenstalled Rome and downloaded the patch, but when I tried to open the .exe file, I got the same message. I decided to go ahead without the patch and installed both 7.2 and 7.4, but when I tried to start EB, it booted out quickly and mentioned something about an unknown data string or something like that. I am begining to give up on this.

EB will only work with RTW v1.2 - that means if you have upgraded to 1.3, 1.5, installed BI, or are using RTW Gold, there will be problems. Assuming that you can install the original RTW (v1.0):

1) Given the problems you've experienced, I recommend uninstalling again. I know, sorry.
2) Install RTW v1.0
3) Install the v1.2 patch (This should be an executable file from CA, not the zip file posted by EB. The zip file is only for use in extreme circumstances.)
4) Load the game to make sure it is working (might want to do this after the 1.0 install, too)
5) If you have the hard disk space, copy the RTW directory and use the copy for EB. That way if there are any problems you can just delete that directory and you won't have to reinstall RTW.
6) Install EB v.72 (again, load to make sure the game is working)
7) Install the EB v.74 patch.

Hopefully now everything is working. If not, tell us at which step you had your first problem.

Err, where exactly do I find CA's file? The EB posted Zip file is still giving me the same message. I went to the Total War site and could not find it under their downloads section.

For those who are especially computer challenged, here's an ultra-detailed set of instructions. But I primarily repost it here due to the links - including the one for the 1.2 patch:

First of all you have to begin with a clean RTW v1.0 install. If you have BI, RTW Gold, or have upgraded to 1.3 or 1.5, EB will not work. If you have the CD that will let you install RTW 1.0, then we can continue (otherwise you're probably out of luck.)

1) To be safe, perform a complete uninstall of RTW. I think you can do this using the "uninstall programs" icon in Windows Control Panel.

2) Install RTW 1.0 off the CDs. During the install, it will tell you where it is going! Make sure you write down that location, since you may need to use it when installing EB. Start up the game after installing to make sure it works.

3) Download the v1.2 patch (http://games.softpedia.com/get/Patch/Rome-Total-War-Patch.shtml) to any location on your computer - put it on the "desktop" if you think you might misplace it. Then doubleclick the file, and it should install itself.

4) Download EB v.72 (https://www.europabarbarorum.com/downloads_mod.html) (again, put it on the desktop if you want). Doubleclick to install, and if it asks where to go, make sure it is THE SAME PLACE where v1.0 was installed! After installing, run the game to be sure EB loads up.

5) Download EB v.74 (https://www.europabarbarorum.com/downloads_patch.html) (again, put it on the desktop if you want). Doubleclick to install, and if it asks where to go, make sure it is THE SAME PLACE where v1.0 was installed! Unless you have a VERY SLOW computer, uncheck the option box for "High Speed Shortcut".

At this point you should be able to run the game from your "EB" desktop shortcut. Good Luck!

I installed and I got .72 to run, so I disided to fiddle around and see how it worked. I tried to start a campeign as Epiros but it crashed to the desktop partway through the load. Is this a know bug in .72? Should I go ahead and install .74 now?

Yeah - 074 really stabilizes the build and adds a few things too. Definitely don't keep playing 072 unless you have some sort of wonderful save game for it.
