How to edit weapons of a unit?

Greetings, I'm a complete n00b at RTW modding.

Can anyone tell me what's needed to change the weapons of a unit? I suppose it's very hard, time-consuming and overall discouraging.

Let's say we have a spear unit with javelins. How would you remove the javelins and add a sword to it?

You would need to edit the model so unless you have 3ds max you won't be able to do this.

That sucks alot.

Not worth the hassle, I could convince someone to do it for me quicker than trying to do it myself.
