Hi all,
In my current game as the Scots in XL, High, Expert. I managed to bribe some rebels who were former crusaders. I noticed later that one of them had royal blood, a former prince I would have thought. It got me wondering though if this former royal of another faction could become king if all my heirs suddenly died?
Anyone else had this happen or even had the OUTSIDER take the throne?

You know thats a dam good question. Ive never seen it happen in my games, or mentioned on the boards. I assume he isnt on your heir list so my uneducated guess is no.
Still, the question piqued my intrest.

Yes it is .....isn't it (pats own back!)
He does not appear in the heirs list, but he is a general of royal blood now not a prince, so he has a claim to the throne indirectly...but is it my throne? I'm tempted to kill my heirs just to see if it happens :laugh4:

If you were playing the HRE or the papacy the he would have a claim to the throne (if he had the most stars of all your generals), but I don't think that he has a claim to the scottish throne unless civil war brakes out or he marries a scottish princess
save game and kill your princes to see. very curious

Not played MTW for a while, but if this works it would be quite cool.
Can you marry a princess to any commander (leader of a unit)?
If so, if you got a special character - say Joan of Arc - could you marry her to a princess? So if there was a civil war, she could end up becoming King of France. That would be quite funny.

Yes, even Joan of Arc can be married to one of your princesses. They can even have children should she proceed to win a civil war. However, generals of the royal blood don't have a claim to the throne, not even when your dynasty dies out (with the exception of the HRE off course). The only way to let an ex-royal inherit is by having him lead a civil war.

Hmm. That presents an interesting challenge: play the French, marry Joan of Arc to one of my princesses and have her become 'king' of France. If anyone does it, please post some screenies...
As for bribed ex-royals: they will acceed to the throne if you're a Catholic or Muslim faction, but not if you're Orthodox. I've had it happen to me when playing the Eggies, the Turks (both times bribed an ex-royal) and a Catholic faction which I can't remember now. I tried the same thing with the Byz, and my faction died off. I also kept an eye on the Serbs played by the AI once, when their king died off without heirs and a general who had a crown on his scroll did not become king.

Please, save your game and kill of your original royal line :) I'd nice to see what happens...

Huh? ~
By that very definition, a "royal general" can inherit if the original dynasty dies off. In fact, it's the only way I've ever even seen a royal general become king (is if my current faction leader dies without a direct heir). Sure, I've sometimes had to fight a civil war if there's more than one ex-royal sitting around, but that goes without saying. They can always inherit the throne, however, as long as they're an extended member of the family--even if they aren't directly in line for the crown anymore.

Could someone please clarify the rules of inheritance in that case?
I mean: My king is heirless but I have a princess and a nice general that I want as a king next. In this case I marry the pricess to him and when the king dies will there be a new king from this new dinasty? Or a civil war? Or the game ends?
In that case the game will be over if the general does not have any royal blood. Unless you are playing as the HRE or the Papal States.

Ok everyone I'm going to test this idea out tonight.
I'll save my current scots game and kill off all my heirs and then my king.
I'll post some screen shots tomorrow as well to give the final results in the all new show......MEDIEVAL KING IDOL with your host Royal Bumcrest!

I recently encounter a similar situation. I was playing as the Byzantines. I was laying siege to the last remaining region of the Egyptians. Inside the castle there was the king and two princes. I attacked the castle but I forgot to take with me the catapults. I choose not to attack and in the next turn the castle was mine as well as the king, the princes and the rest of the Egyptian army.
In my case the royal banner was present but the units were not in my succession list and loyalty shield wan not mine (Byzantine) but Egyptian. I decided to kill them all. I use the disband option and get read of the king and the fist prince. When i tried to do same with the third the button was not there any more.
I forgot to mention that the Egyptians according to the function page were still active. The emissaries were too until i killed them as well as a priest.
I decided to send him on a battle without tomorrow and get him killed. From that point on and from every turn i get the message that the Rebel function leader is dead and so on...
The Egyptians were still there thought.
From my point of view this case as well as the one i read here are both Bugs

NO!
I'm pretty sure getting him to marry my princess would not make a difference to the final outcome. But if anyone thinks it might I'll try that :idea2:

Aww... Now try to marry him with your princess. :D Very interesting to try at least. I don't think he will be King though but please try it, Spearman.
Yeah, a pity it didn't work. I'd go ahead and marry one of your princesses to him, but I have a feeling it's not going to make a difference. Thanks for checking it out, though!
