View Full Version : Greetings from an unrecovered addict
Got tired of the current crop of MMOLRPGs and picked up MTW Gold again, then went out and got RTW and BI and am now messing about with the mods here and elsewhere. I don't think I've ever completed a game though :idea2: .
My #1 complaint is the lack of a campaign map in the RTW/BI docs. I bought a Prima strategy guide used solely to get one (it's really terrible quality though, but better than none). That failed in the case of BI though. That is the worst excuse for a "strategy guide" I've yet seen. The RTW one is ok (the same info, and better, is available here and elsewhere, but the map is something); the BI one is a total waste of cash (It's a thinly disguised rehash of info easily available in game and a lot of the "hints" are flat wrong).
Anyway, just posting a first message to work towards full membership. Wanted to post a correction to a wrong statement in one of the MTW fora but not allowed yet  .
Oh, to all the modders: thanks :2thumbsup: . I've done some in the past and know the investment of time and energy (Civ & Tropico). And I'm enjoying the ones I can run with RTW Gold and BI.

Welcome vonsch!
You shouldn't have gotten a strategy guide, it's always better to find things out for yourself or just look online for tips if you're really absolutely dying for help on the game. As for mods, you've got to try EB and RTR (try RTR first though, as EB isn't completed and once you've tried EB it's hard to go back to RTR)

Mind you, I bought the guides AFTER I'd played a lot and read everything I could find online. I found all I could wish for for MTW, but could not find maps for RTW. Too much fog of war is annoying. Guess I could turn it off. My wish would be for a hazy sort of map that was firmed up as things were explored, not a great terra incognita. Even the Romans knew that way over thataway there was a place called... whatever.
The block map I found for MTW online is great. Except it's for vanilla :inquisitive: . But that served to let me get a larger strategic view of the game world.
I'm messing with XL for MTW now. At the strategic level I prefer MTW. The battle controls in RTW are superior, though I think I prefer the actual blood and dust in MTW more. I hope MTW2 takes the best of both!
I am a true oldtimer so I keep hoping the strategy guides will measure up to the old ones for Civilization (1!) or Railroad Tycoon (1!). Not much chance of that, it appears. For that degree of detail it's haunt these sorts of fora. Can't even get a decent map nowadays. The TW manuals aren't bad, comparatively, but they lack the meat I prefer in my manual diet. I prefer games, not puzzles. I seems the refuge of many games developers today is to skimp drastically on the documentation and "add value" by making the customer puzzle out everything, rather than study up and knuckle down to BEAT the game, not solve the puzzle. Oh well. :wall:
But that comment is not directed at TW, even if the series has turned out more that way than I'd like. The series is still far superior to most games in that regard.
I have EB downloaded, but haven't installed it yet since it does seem a one way move. I'm still trying to figure out which mods are most likely to work with my late-to-the-games versions. I'm watching RTR.
In any case, thanks for your reply.
And thanks to The Stranger too.

Welcome to the Org Vonsch. ~
EB is the best mod around here, and I suggest you should play it and play it over and over again. ~D
Welcome to the Org, vonsch ~ . I hope you will enjoy your stay here. There are fine maps for R:TW and BI on this site (http://lazarus.elte.hu/~hzsolt/html/rtw_terkepek.html), made by rumcajsz. Also there is the capital calculator (http://www.ravenousbugblatterbeast.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/bestcap.htm) made by d0t and Ravenous Bugblatterbeast.
EB and R:TR require the 1.2 version of R:TW, so if you have BI installed I am afraid you can't play them. However, both are in the process of being ported, R:TR to BI 1.6 and EB to R:TW 1.5, but I doubt that these ports will be ready within the next couple of weeks. Darthmod and SPQR are ported to R:TW 1.5, so you might want to consider them.

Thanks Ludens. I'll peek at those maps.
I noted the version issues, but someone said they had EB running with 1.6 so was considering trying... but have Darthmod and haven't even fully explored that, so EB can wait. I do like the new formations in Darthmod a lot. For now it's MTW though :2thumbsup: .

Wow. Very nice maps. Now those would have saved me the price of the silly strategy guides  . Thanks for the tip.

You could always copy your RTW file so that you have RTW and EB. Personally I have 3: RTR, EB and a backup for Blue Lotus.

If he has bought the Gold edition that is not possible: it comes already patched. I heard someone claim it is possible to downgrade R:TW by using the zipped 1.2 patch and overwriting all files, but I am not sure if this actually works.

He got the MTW gold version Ludens, not the RTW gold. He got RTW and BI.
Nah, I have gold for both. I came late to both, though I played Shogun way back when. If I get impatient I can always do some bargain bin diving for the earlier versions, I guess.

No need, you can just wait for the next version of RTR to come out (it needs RTW 1.6, which you have)
