I have a fresh install of 1.2 woth Europa 7.2 and patched to 7.4
After the rome total war intro comes up
I get the error
Failure to initialize 3d audio
The game then crashes to desktop
The first thing you could do, is updating your audio drivers.
Bonny has a good point - are you sure this is caused by EB? One way to test, is to uninstall EB (use the included uninstall icon - uninst.exe), and then restart v1.2. If it still CTD's, then he's right and you have some kind of audio problem - probably drivers.
If it does launch and you can load a game of vanilla RTW 1.2, then go ahead and install EB v1.2. Be sure to Load a game and Test it! If v.72 is OK, install v.74 (and this time, do NOT select the "High Speed" shortcut). And test again. If it CTDs at any point in that process, tell us when and how.

My drivers are up to date.
I uninstalled everything ran 1.2 no problem.
I then installed 7.2 EB
When I start and affter the rome total war intro comes up
I get the error
Failure to initialize 3d audio
The game then crashes to desktop
I tried it with the 7.4 patch and I get the same error
The only I have done is change RomeTotalwar.Exe to read EB.Exe after the install, can this be a problem?
I have creative audigy soundblaster.

I think there must have been a problem with the 72 download (my best guess here). If I were in your shoes I would try downloading the 72 build (a new download of it), then download a new 74 patch too, and delete map.rwm and try it out.

I did what you recommended and and I finally got it to work.
Only one thing is unusual I can save the campaign!
It this suppose to be this way for the rebel faction?
