I've been trying to make it so that thracian pikemen can be built in an urban cohort in occupied cities, but whenever I change it, the game won't work, can anyone help me.
Hello.
If you mean you want to make them recruitable in a different barracks then just edit 'data/export_descr_buildings.txt'.
If you want to make them recruitable by a different faction, then add that factions name to the pikemen entries in:
1) data/export_descr_buildings.txt
2) data/export_descr_units.txt
3) data/decr_model_battle.txt (Copy the skin and sprite lines for the pikemen and use the new factions name instead of thrace)
And if you want to make them recruitable by a new faction, but just in Thrace; well then it's going to get a little bit more complicated.
You need to follow the above steps and also add a hidden resource to the Thracian regions of the map. This will make them recruitable only in those provinces, the same as elephants only being recruitable in areas with the elephant resource.
I'm afraid I don't have a link to a tutorial for this, but I'm sure another of the helpful fellows here does :laugh4:
Good luck:2thumbsup:
edit. I found 2: http://www.twcenter.net/forums/showthread.php?t=17266
and: https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showpost.php?p=661155&postcount=2
(This one is probably more relevent to the task)

Thanks a lot for the help.
I was already in data/descr_buildings and just trying to get my thracian pikemen to build & retrain in captured roman cities with Urban Barracks, but the game kept crashing whenever I did it.
Although the other info you provided is excellent, thank you!
Thracian pikemen should already be able to be recruited from urban barracks, all units are available at every level of barracks up from the one they first appear at.

Hmm, they don't on mine, I already had to allow them to be built in army barracks, but the urban ones make my game crash.
Try adding the show error code to your rome desktop shortcut. You can do this by right clicking on your desktop shortcut, going to properties and adding -show_err to the target line. Leave one space between the original stuff and the new bit.
("C:\Program Files\Activision\Rome - Total War\RomeTW.exe" -show_err)
This will hopefully tell you what's wrong, and if not post the error code here and we will be able to help you.
