Yes, the Nintendo Revolution's final name has been revealed. Wii. Cue terrible jokes along the lines of the topic title, or (courtesy of Tim Buckley) 'now i can play with my wii all night long!'

Actually Gamecube is a good name. As it's a nearly cube shapped thing that plays games. N64 that was lame ass name. Not a stupid as Wii but close.

All the lame jokes are over on slashdot. I think it sounds incredibly stupid, but maybe that's the point. It sure lit up the 'Net overnight and got everyone talking about it, in a way that wouldn't have happened if they used something more predictable.

Aside from the free PR buzz, having a silly and diminutive name means the actual platform doesn't have to live up to anything grandiose like "Revolution." So maybe that's an advantage too. I just hope intentionally stupid/silly product names doesn't become a big trend.

See, I was going to make a topic like this yesterday, but I couldn't do it nicely. Now that I have calmed down, maybe I can contribute.

This is nothing but a case of marketing hell. I can't believe that this is the actual name for a game system. The ii doesn't look cute, or interesting, it is the way a child would spell it if they couldn't remember the e instead.

This is unbelievable. I'm not so sure I even want a Wii anymore. I was dead set on a Revolution however.

It could be subject to a name change as well. the GameCube was originally slated as "Nintendo Dolphin".

I personally think it was a good idea. After all, look at all the publicity they whipped up in about 24 hours. More than they could have if they'd used a more dull name.

The name gave them PR, and as long as their console works well, people`s probably gonna buy it.

Actually, Ive read the opposite- that the Revolution (Im holding off on using that stupid name for as long as I can) will be the gaming connoisseur's system. It's the only one offering any real innovation afterall, the other systems are just more of the same with prettier graphics. I guess it comes down to how you define a 'hard-core'r gamer.

As to the name- I think it was a pretty dumb choice. It probably won't matter much in Japan where the 360 is already pretty much finished, but American gamers need a cooler sounding name before they'll buy a console... for some reason. I dont really like the name myself, but I'll get used to it.

:balloon2:It's a pretty sad explanation that they've offerred... Wii, pronounced "we" signifies how it's a system for everyone to play together, and the 'ii' is supposed to be symbolic of the controllers... blah, blah, blah.... :book:

Well, you gotta hand it to 'em: it's a daring gamble. They've certainly generated a ton of publicity this way, and right now everybody is talking about the Revo--sorry, I mean, Wii. It's got people thinking on the system. Soon, E3 will be around, and if Nintendo plays it right it can use the added publicity and new attention surrounding the system to captivate many more people than it could have with a more conservative name such as Revolution (which would have earlier PS and Xbox buyers go "oh, a Nintendo... shrug"). Provided the attention span of gamers lasts, however.

Name still sucks though. Not sure if I gotta take a--I mean, get a Wii. It's a Wii bit off, this name. One wonders if he wants to get caught playing with a Wii.

So very true, a name shouldn't really matter. Though it may lead to very acquired moments when your explaining to your GF your playing a Wii. With the PS3's supposed cost of 600 euro's, 700-800 dollars I'm betting the Wii might do pretty well against the other consoles.
