Anybody know anything else about this? I'd really like it if they could discover and publish some new ancient texts during my lifetime. I'd especially like to have Livy's books covering the wars with Pyrrus (books XI-XV?).

I hope they do continue excavations. The chance of finding full copies of ancient texts is too much of a chance to pass up. The only question is where to get the money.

Even the devil likes history. But you can't force the locals to dig for you then give you the manuscripts, that's completely against international law, is immoral, unjustified and selfish. You want it, you get a permit and go dig it yourself. After that, read the manuscript, but give it to the local government.

If you are lucky enough to find a gazillion of petrol in your back yard, guess what, it belongs to the state!!! :furious3:

Anyhow, if I found an antique manuscript or something of historical value, it's mine and all mine. No giving to the government, no telling to even the family. Who knows, he might be your enemy....

I might sound paranoic, but that's my view. Objects of historical value are gold for me. :book:

In England here if you find something ancient and historic you HAVE to hand it in to the government or whoever so they can put it in a museum... BUT, they pay you full price of what the artifact/book/script/whatever is worth, so you could become a rich man... Or woman.

There's one place in England where you can go, and i want to go in the future, where if you dig just a tiny bit you'll find absolutely loads of Roman coins... I don't think they know why they're all there but you just need to dig a tiny bit and there are absolutely loads of them... They've probably stopped letting people dig there now though so the museums can get their greedy hands on every damn thing. :furious3:

The same here in Romania, in the Orastie Mountains, near Sarmizegetusa, the Getai capital. Many gold "chosons" were found in a mountain, which is rumoured to be the Cogaionon Sacred Mountain, because of the number of coins.

And the coin is invaluable. It is about 90% pure gold. :jawdrop:

The Villa at Herculanum is a big issue, not least because the local government doesn't seem to realise how important it is. Apparently Vesuvius is rumbling again and of course the site has already been opened up and we all know what happens when they do that.

It needs to be done and fast. As to translations, well they'll have to reconstruct the texts first. Personnally I'm hoping for some more of Trojan War Cycle.
