Right , there are several different factions fighting for several different reasons in their own country , plus there are several different factions from other countries that as well as fighting in their own country are also fighting in Dharfur .
Then consider that there are also two other wars going on in the same country with both domestic and foriegn groups fighting both in the country and in neighbouring ones , plus the possibility of another war kicking off in the same country .
Now add in that there has been pretty much constant war/wars since independance , and before independance there was a lot of war/wars going on all the time .
Then when you make this deduction......but it was so confusing of who is fighitng who,and w/e...its not surprising at all , very confusing trying to make any sense of it at all .

Basically the Darfur Conflict started in February 2003 by an armed attack made by two black rebel groups (the JEM and the SLM) against the Sudanese government's forces and installations. It has it background in the long history of ethnic and religious tension between the blacks and the arabs.
This resulted in the Sudanese government arming local arab tribes and thus forming something called the Janjaweed militia. This militia was used to combat the rebels in Darfur. The problem that this militia had was that big parts of these rebels were harboured in villages.
Anyways the method that the Janjaweed militia used to deal with the rebels was raiding the villages in Darfur. You can find the details of these raids pretty much anywhere. These raids led to the establishment of massive refugee camps and caused much of the Darfur countryside to become desolated. Also another grave problem has been the fact that these raids have broken the backbone of agriculture in Darfur due to the fact that noone is actually left to harvest the ground and thus has caused a severe shortage in food.
To quickly summarize the Darfur conflict; it's a conflict between the black rebels and the government sponsored Janjaweed-militia, that became a genocide due to the fact that this militia targetted the local population in its efforts to eliminate the rebels. These raids pretty much led to the refugee situation and the hunger plaguing these refugees.
Anyways if you want to know more just check: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/in_depth/africa/2004/sudan/default.stm

Basically Chad's involvement is due to the fact they accuse the Sudanese Government of backing rebel groups in Chad. Also the Janjaweed militia has raided the villages close to the Sudanese border, which of course hasn't made things that much better. Additionally a nice amount of refugees have fled to Chad additionally making relations worse.
But Chad itself doesn't have much to do with the Darfur crisis, but they've been kinda dragged into it against their wishes.

Isn't the Country Chad a part of this??
Groups from Chad are fighting in Chad and Sudan , and groups from Sudan are fighting in Sudan and Chad .
Plus smaller problems with Libya and C.A.R. , confusing isn't it .
I believe that another factor is that the ruler of Chad and many of the military command and government are from the same ethnic tribe as the many of the victims of the genocide being committed by the janjaweed militia (and their supporting Sudanese masters).
Edit: After a little research, some more information. The ruler of Chad, President Lt. General Idriss Deby Itno is a member of the Zaghawa ethnic group. The three main victims of the genocide in Sudan being committed with help from the Sudanese government by the janjaweed militias are the Fur, Massaleet and Zaghawa, although there are several more tribes being systematically eliminated as well. Deby's entire personal presidential guard is formed of Zaghawa. Several former prime ministers of Chad are Zaghawa as well. Two of the main rebel leaders in Sudan are Zaghawa, which is one reason why they are targetted by the janjaweed.

Well once you actually get the proper information it's not really that confusing at all. The problem here is that finding it tends to be a bit trickier.

So groups A,B,C,D,E,F are fighting Government 1 and groups X,Y,Z .
group X is also fighting Y,Z .
Z is fighting Govt 2 and groups O,P .
Govt 2 is fighting P,Q and E,F
A,B is fighting C,D and O
E is fighting F, C and P
P is fighting Q
Not confusing at all , would you like to add govt 3,4 and groups J,K,L,M and R,S,T,U .
Kurdistan and all the different groups and governments is confusing enough . Sudan/Central/N.Africa is a nightmare to try and unravel and comprehend .
