I just started playing Rome (the Gold Edition). I'm trying to play the prologue and it will not let me save. When I press escape, whether I'm in battle mode or on the map, the save and load buttons are greyed out. The first time I got past the first battle and had to shut the computer down without it letting me save. I patched it to 1.5 (it came with 1.3) thinking this might help. It didn't. Last night I got all the way past the first siege battle, and still was unable to save. This is ruining what otherwise seems like an incredibly cool game. I can't keep a desktop pc running for the duration of the game. Can anyone help?

My ideas are check if the disc is damaged or go down to where you got it from and explain what the problem is and then they should change it for you.

Welcome earwicker!

About your problem, have you changed the files or deleted some by accident? Try pressing "Ctrl+S" to save.

I'm hoping this isn't the case as I know this was the last copy at EB Games and I don't want to wait for them to ship another copy.

You can't save during the prologue IIRC. However once past the prologue either by finishing it or escaping, you will be able to play a real campaign which can now be chosen in the singleplayer menu. You can save in the real thing ~:)

It's called the "Imperial Campaign".

The only time I went into the files was looking for the readme to try to find out what version I had. I couldn't find it and didn't change/delete anything. This was after the first try at saving, so I don't think this is it.

You can save after about 40-60 minutes ofthe prologue so just be patient. The advisor tells you something about "being on your own" and then you can save. the prologue is quite fun and never gets boring unlike the campaign

Try this.

Go into the Rome total war folder on your C drive and look for the prefences.txt. open it. Look for

FIRST_TIME_PLAY:TRUE
And change it too

FIRST_TIME_PLAY:FALSE
then start the game and the Imperial campaign should be unlocked. Run it chose a faction anyone and start the game when the game opens if your roman a window opens just click ok on it. then see of you can save it by pressing CTRL and S if that don't work try saving it teh same way you have been.

Do you remember at what point this takes place? I just don't want to play the prologue a 3rd time and have to shut it off before I get there.

well if you got past the siege then you can play the imperial campaign. it is a bit after you take the first city and build some buildings they ask you to

The only problem with this is that I really want to play the prologue. This is my first time with total war (other than trying a demo a few years ago) so I think I'l be overwhelmed without a tutorial.

Well if you do do that you can still play the tutorial. It's just to see if it works.

As i think you should. just reserve about 1-2 hours and go for it. I also thought my game was broken when i couldn't save but your game seems just about right

From DA guide:

Now your choice is a little more limited; when you start the game up you are forced to do the Sons of Mars tutorial campaign. Playing the tutorial is a good idea; it acquaints you with the basics of the game. Sadly, and most frustratingly in my experience, you are forced to use the RTS style camera throughout the tutorial. If you hate using this camera you will hate the tutorial. Once the tutorial is completed (Victoria will tell you when you have finished, then give you the option of quitting or continuing to play) you can access custom battles, multiplayer, the Imperial campaign and all those other fun bits. Alternatively, if you are feeling sneaky and don’t mind missing all the lessons, you can just start the tutorial then immediately quit. This will also unlock all the other game modes.
