Most have seen musketeers shooting at maximum range and the bullets continuing through the units out of range causing more casualties. Now in Totomi ( the plains of death ) I had a unit of muskies on one of the knolls approached buy a unit of muskies on the lower plain. The enemy muskets open fire on my elevated unit. Now behind my muskets and behind the knoll ( lower elevation ) the YS unit starts taking casualties and to rub salt in the wounds the YC behind them start taking casualties as well.

So, not only did the bullets travel upward to my Muskets, but then fell over the hill at chest height, and then richocheted into the cav at head height.

Has anyone else seen this kind of behaviour? No wonder there is a preferance of muskets to archers.

Yeah I kinda noticed it, but not with such drastic circumstances as your. The only real solution is to back your guys up so they're out of range.

See, here in lies another problem. Muskets firing at a unit at their max range will cause casualties in units behind them which they could not normally fire at ( Out of range ). Irrespective of elevation!

If you mean back my front line back then it becomes a shoot off. I was trying to use the knoll as cover for my infantry and cavalry!

At such great ranges the penetrating power of arquebusques' were greatly inferior, so this isn't even historically accurate http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/frown.gif

I always use those knolls for cover when I can, guess now I'll be checking for unexplained casualties. Your other thread about your Totomi battle reminds me of Sekigahara, the two armies trying to sweep the flank like a pin-wheel.

God I love this game http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif

yup i also find it is more difficult to protect your guns if you have to back up a long way !!! even behind a hill wich was supossed to protect you at least from gun fire http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/frown.gif

Konnichiwa,

Ballistic arc? You think you would survive a bullet hitting your nose?

How about a dying soldier in front of you swinging his yari in your chest?

The game does model the effects of gravity on bullet and arrow trajectories ( although not air resistance ), so if the lie of the ground is just right, you could shoot over hills, but I think this should be a pretty rare occurance. If it does happen, you could remedy it by advancing the unit that is being shot at down the slope a little, which will change the trajectory the enemy are shooting at.

The maximum range of both bullets and arrows, does not represent the maximum range that the weapons are capable of, but the maximum range that it makes sense for a unit to open fire at, given the trade of between energy and ammunition expended, and the damage likely to be done. It is also a play balancing mechanism that limits the extent to which fire from many units can be concentrated on one enemy unit.

Don't you guys know that the musketeers do NOT carry muskets. If you take a good look at them, you can see that they are actually carrying grenade launchers.

Hello LongJohn, and everybody else.

I had all of this explained by Target before, when I mailed him a screenshot of what I believed to be very strange indeed. I will put the screenshot on my site tomorrow for you to check it out.

Hi guys,

Just added a new screenshot to my site.
I have seen quite a weird sudden death of a trooper that was way out of range. Luckily, I made a screenshot of this.

To view the screenshot, go to my site, click 'General' and then screenshots. It's the one on the bottom of the page.

I sent it to Target, one of the game programmers, and he explained how this could happen. Basically, it was a million to one chance for that guy to get killed. That distance, anything in between that the bullit missed, and then to hit that guy in the eye... Poor Fellow.

By the way, I agree with the qualification of 'Tech Support', but who is that ugly guy to the left? For the record, I AM NOT BALD!!!! Looks an awful lot like TKD, who is doing quite well at the moment and is currently moving to Switzerland. His revalidation perios there has certainly made an impact! Veterans will know who I'm talking about.

Enjoy!
