U.S. intelligence loses track of N. Korea nukes

The U.S. intelligence community has conceded that it has lost count over North Korea's nuclear program.

Government sources said the intelligence community has concluded that Pyongyang has produced at least a dozen nuclear weapons. But the sources said the nuclear facilities are so far underground that they can't even venture a credible estimate of the production rate.

"Everybody's talking about Iran," a source close to the intelligence community said. "Iran is the future threat. North Korea is today's threat and we have no idea how big that threat really is."

North Korea's nuclear weapons program has led to Pyongyang’s refusal to return to six-party talks, the sources said. The program has also convinced South Korea to propose economic aid to Pyongyang. A summit between the two Koreas has been scheduled for June.

The sources said the North Korean nuclear weapons program could become a major factor in determining when Iran reaches similar capability. They said Pyongyang, as it has done with missiles, could quickly supply components and technology to ensure Iranian nuclear capability.

"Even if we bomb Iran, the North Koreans could quickly revive the nuclear weapons program," the source said. "As it stands now, we have no plan to stop North Korea."

Maybe all the Iran talk is just to distract us from the failure to stop North Korea. If anybody wants to sell a nuke, it's gonna be this jackball.

The trick is to get Nukes before, when they don’t look, then, when you've got them, it is easier…

Golly who is this North Korea you all speak of? When the heck did these guys become a problem? If North Korea attacks its neighbors or sells weapons to Iran how will we find a way to blame it on Saddam Hussein and Al Quieda? The way everyone is worried about North Korea you'd think we'd fought them in a war or something!!!!1 .

I wonder if the Intelligence Community will begin to release some of the information from back in 1992-1994 about North Korea's nuclear weapons program?

I find it interesting that there is now an intelligence report that confirms that they have absolutely no clue about where North Korea is in its weapons programs.

Any bets on someone will attempt to blame Bush in some way, for this particular news? It would be rather interesting if someone is naive to attempt such a stance, especially given that its been suspected for a while that North Korea does indeed have nuclear weapons of some type.

I don't think many people have doubted that North Korea has a nuke weapons program, and I don't think many people have doubted North Koreas ill will to its southern neighbors and the west. What really tickles me is the fact that this nation has been a wart on the fanny of peace for quite some time now, yet every nation with the means disarm north korea and "liberate" its people sidesteps the issue and picks McWars of the Week instead. I know! Maybe we could put 3 more bases there for the next 50 years, one to the east, west and north. That will show em!

Let's see..

East: Japan: US has got a base there
West: China: I doubt the US could get a base there
North: Russia: or here
