View Full Version : WARNING about MTW/VI Gold Edition
If you purchase MTW/VI Gold Edition you get version 2.0, and the official version 2.01 patch doesn't work with it. The v2.01 patch contains very important improvements to the game which you won't be able to get, and you won't be able to play multiplayer games with anyone who is using v2.01.
So it's true. Have you actually tested this though? Your king dies at 56 I expect etc etc?
If so this is bad news, and I'm at a loss as to the reasoning behind it. A few people have brought this up at the .com but it's been mostly ignored. The mods locked all the threads and declared that the VI patch does the job, which it clearly doesn't from what I've seen so far.
I haven't tested it, but LadyAn did. She had a fix, but a moderator here deleted it. https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showthread.php?t=63431
CA released later VI discs pre-patched to 2.01, so why on earth has this one been released at 2.0? :dizzy2:
I have an idea of what LadyAn was referring to in that deleted part of the post... unfortunately it will be difficult to provide MTW players with a fix to this issue, without complete information. Extracting the patch files and overwriting them over the gold edition installation is the key then getting the game to run as a normal MTW/VI 2.01 installation.
Three other people are reporting the same problem on May 16, May 19 and May 21 in the Support Requests forum at .com.
It looks like I'm wasting my time working on STWmod for MTW/VI v2.01.
There are 2 problems related to patching MTW Gold Edition to v2.01 and play online:
1. The first problem is that the official patch V2.01 requires you to have MTW installed and registered in your computer. Since Gold Edition has a different registry entry, the official patch don't recognize it and asked us to install MTW v1.0 again. This can be worked around with an unofficial patch V2.01 available through link in download section of this site (www.totalwar.org).
2. The second problem is that the patch V2.01 asks for the physical disc of MTW/VI to be in the CD Drive. Since Gold Edition has different signature, the patch don't recognize the Gold Edition disk as genuine-paid-for-and-owned disk. This problem has no official solution.
Without patching, the owner of the Gold Edition is stuck with the bugs of V2.0, but he could play with other Gold Edition owners. He won't be able to play with other MTW/VI v2.01 players, nor using other mods such as Samurai, Napoleonic or DUX.
However, both problems above have to be solved simultaneously: if you fix #1 without #2, you will end up with an unusable MTW program and will have to reinstall MTW Gold again.

UPDATE Gold to 2.01
FIRST PROBLEM - official patch wont work
use the un-official patch which ignores the registry entries,
VI_201_Patch.zip
download from this page
http://www.3ddownloads.com/totalwar/MTW/patches
NEXT PROBLEM - 2.01 will not recognise the Gold CD
there is a workaround for this, but we cannot publish the information,
if you check the forum rules you should be able to figure out WHY we cannot publish the information,
once you have done that, the rest should be easy

I think it's better to purchase the games separately.

I'm inclined to agree with you... :gah2:

As it stands the only way to make the product work is to break the EULA.
As such it is a faulty product as there is no legal way of patching it and should be returned to the place of purchase.
I suggest also sending a letter of complaint (by snail mail) not emailed to SEGA as they are both the publishers and owners of CA. Emails will are easier to ignore on the whole. If anyone can think of other venues to voice your complaints I suggest you list them in this thread.
Petition to get MTW GOLD Patched to 2.01 (https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showthread.php?p=1155559#post1155559)
It has been shown in the past that only the squeakest of wheels can hope for proper patching of TW game. This is one of the areas where it falls short of being one of meeting its full potential.
I am reprinting my post made over at the com forum,
just in case they take it as encouraging piracy over there and delete it,

it is becomming obvious there are many people who have bought MTW Gold Edition and WANT to play online with the rest of us,
for that reason we have started a petition to request an update for Gold Edition at the Org
forums.totalwar.org/vb/sh...hp?t=65338
the only way these players can currently get online with us is to break the EULA,
while that is a legal technicality here in Australia (where the law specifically states you can make a backup Providing you retain a legal copy And do not distribute your backup),
it is an issue in many other countries.
What is needed is a patch to bring Gold up to 2.01 standard
(which would require developer resources to make)
or legal permission from CA/Sega to operate from a backup.
(which would simply require a lawyer to draft such an exemption for Gold Edition for which players could apply)

As I said in the petition thread, Dutch buyers should not worry because the Gold Edition released here is patched to 2.01.

Interesting...why on earth did they do that? As I have been suspecting, there ARE two versions of the Gold Edition- the 2.0 amd the 2.01.
As I said in the petition thread, Dutch buyers should not worry because the Gold Edition released here is patched to 2.01.
I don't think it is because you bought the Dutch edition. One person installed it on two computers and got a patched and unpatched version. In other words, something strange is going on, and possibly the Gold edition does come patched, but the patch isn't always implemented properly.

Could you give me a link if you remember where it was posted? Very strange...

It's this post (https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showpost.php?p=1157755&postcount=25) in the petition thread.

How do find out what version i have?
Tony Furze

The Version No. is on the main menu, top left of the screen. Mine says 2.0 and the normal 3 CD MTW/VI (not Gold) should say 2.01.
But...there are some strange things going on.

Medieval Gold Edition Patch Released : now available on www.totalwar.com under support/medieval!

We need someone to do an online test of MTW Gold using the newly released TW.exe file with people who have the MTW/VI non-Gold version 2.01.
