So, anything fancy about the location and other stuff about proms?
For example, all of the 8th grades in Romania do a prom before they enter high school. My old school(Jean Monnet High School, the fanciest in the whole Bucharest, I went to it just because it was very close to me) did their 8th grade prom at Crowne Plaza Hotel(4 stars). So, me very furious about it.
What about your proms?

AFAIK we don't 'do' proms in Belgium, I didn't have one at least. What we do have are the so called 'hundred days' or in other regions the 'fifty days'. It's one day in the year (a hundred or fifty days before graduation) when the high school seniors celebrate the end of education at that school. And you can take celebration rather serious.
Before going to school most senior students get together in a bar and start the celebrations early. While the younger students attend their classes, the seniors prepare something for the whole school (sometimes they have classes to but believe me that there isn't much teaching going on at that moment). Than there is a kind of show for the whole school with a theme (in the bar a few hours earlier the seniors were already in their outfits). In the afternoon more alcohol is consumed while raiding every bar in the nearby city, still dressed in their costumes (I believe I was Rudolf the reindeer). It's a real social event as every already high school senior in and around the city celebrates together.
Just try to imagine hundreds of students parading through streets on a weekday in costumes all of them in a state ranging from sober, mildly tipsy to puking his guts out and ordering another right after.
I don't believe you can get the same 'euphoria' (in lack of a better word) with a prom but a prom does have it charm to.

Proms at my school are usually in Highschool. I don't think there was any in junior school (6th-8th grade). We usually have it in a gym of some school, or in the dance hall of a community college called Incarnate Word close to our high school.

We don't have proms here.
At Christmas, the senior school (5th year and 6th year) has a Ceilidh in school, where the boys all wear kilts and knives and dance the Gay Gordons, the Military Two Steps, and Strip the Willow, and the Grand Old Duke of York (amongst others) with the girls.
6th years have a ball in the Invercarse Hotel in the summer before they leave school.

Proms tend to be something fancy and it's really an event in someone's life I guess. ~:)

We have a prom at our high scholl, at least one of the couple must be a senior to get in. I am only a freshman so i didnt go, but i went to homecomming which is probably the second biggest dance. It was alright, the dinner before the dance was kind of akward, we had a big group of 14, nobody really knew what to talk about. The dance was kind of stupid, it is more of a photoshoot then a dance. We spent about an hour taking photos and the rest of the dance just standing around and talking a little. I only danced with my dance for about 2 songs, which was ok with both of us. Although after the dance was fun. We went over to my dates house and watched the longest yard and had a bunch of food. We stayed there untill about 2 or 3 in the morning before we all got tired and went home. I probably will go agian next year if i get up the courage to ask someone.

My High School prom I declined to go to because I was a bit of a fool back then, with some kind of opposition to formal dress, as well as it clashing with a trip to London it had planned.
My Sixth-Form's leavers' prom has been cancelled due to lack of interest, which is rather annoying since I am now dressing far better, and would love the opportunity to put my glad-rags on. So, instead we are just having a big party, and getting very drunk.

I drank about a litre of Vodka before going to my prom, felt up a few girls, had a fist fight, broke two teeth and ended up staying a night in the Pokey. Fun Times...except the Jail Part. :inquisitive:

Why not, couldn't find a date eh? (kidding)
I got a job instead of going to prom. There was plenty of time to get drunk later, and without a ton of faces I wasn't going to enjoy seeing.

Proms cost too freaking much.
The_Doctor
05-29-2006, 11:32
Why not
Loads of reasons. It was not a very popular idea to have a "prom". It conjures up images of America teen movies. Also the venue and the fact that loads of teachers would be there. And the price.

Proms cost too freaking much.
They actually arent too bad, at least not for the guys. Maybe $150, it was free to get in, the dinner was about $25, pictures about $25 also, and the clothes were about $100 with the flower thing. It might be a little more for a limo for prom, but not too overly expensive. Girls spend way more money and time on it than guys.

I never went to prom, nor any sort of dance or any kind of official school social function in junior or senior high school. And I've yet to regret it.

Ian, my comrade, you have done well for yourself.~;)
At my school Ceilidh, we just asked various people to dance on the night, nothing as monogamous as asking a girl to attend in our company.
The Kilts cost a fair sum to hire, usually around £60; to buy they cost hundreds and hundreds of pounds along with the rest of the highland dress.
And you need to buy your own knife...
GAH! what is this prom of which you speak? We scotsmen have Ceilidhs, and are REAL men. Except from the last one I attended, where real kinves were banned and fake plastic replicas were stuck in our socks. HOWEVER, manly men we remain.
On another note, are proms as big a deal to americans as TV over here makes them out to be? Do girls really go around in little groups, date boys called "Brandon", and attempt to make the "geeky" ones look foolish? i've never spent time in america, yet shows like "made" and "the OC" portray proms as a night to be feared, where the popular ones lord over all and the rest do their damnest to become "cool". hopefully i'm wrong, but i'm curious to know.

Real knives were banned? My school almost expected us to have real knives, my year head almost frowned upon those of us who hired kilts and didn't get real knives.
As for that photo, Ian, I've got it somewhere, just need to resize it...

Real knives were banned? Indeed they were. A school is quite a safe , what with teachers and all, and i guess the hall owners of the ceilidh i attended didn't want anyone getting drunk and foolish. Didn't really matter though, you only see the top anyways, and thankfully there was no "my weapon is larger than yours (yes, that could be construed as an innuendo)" situation.

That's because you live in America. A British Prom and an American prom aren't the same thing ( I think). Can you confirm this, Malcom?
Usually, a guy asks a girl, they get dressed up, go out to eat, go to a dance, and then a party afterwards. This can be done in a group of many couples or just one couple. You can even go alone. (Wouldn't recommend that).

My appoliges, I didn't know he was from Scotland.
No worries, its only the crazy Scots who where kilts anyway ~;p. I'm not to sure what a English, Welsh or Northern Irish prom would be like. My guess it would be in some way similar to a American Prom.

A Scottish Ceilidh (we do not have Proms) goes as such:
A group of friends and acquaintances meet up.
Together they go to the ceilidh, whereupon the ceilidh band plays music to which one dances with a girl whom one has asked at the ceilidh.
Thence we try to go out, but find that the Deputy Rector has telephoned the clubs and pubs to not let in anyone wearing kilts or evening dresses because they have most likely came from the school ceilidh and are thus under-age.
