View Full Version : Im beaten?
I was playing the Irish. And I got off pretty well and had all of ireland and part of the pict's land (last king died). Until the saxons died and I inherited 3 of their main provinces, right along the border with mecia. For 50 years me and him have been going at it, and let me explain something to you. I consider myself very good strategian and battlefield commander, but I think iv met my match. My armys have been continualy trampled and rebuilt facing these guys. Dont know how, but they got massive amounts of units and have been massacring me. Then the vikings attacked (no reason) and have been reducing my once fordminable navy to nothing.
I maybe couldve won a attrition battle (maybe not, all mercs were used up) but then civil war happened, and I had to reload 3 times. Im evacuating and destroying the saxon lands and going back to ireland to face certain rebellion. Iv never lost a campaign. This was a valuble and interesting experiance. I tried attacking his rear but so far iv only plundered 3 provinces and the raiders are in dire straits with the vikings blocking the way. The main rebel is prince brian, lets just hope he doesnt force me to accuse him of treason before hes king.
reload? tsk tsk. Take your defeat like a man/woman.

The Irish have some nice units but they just don't have the staying power like other factions. I've given up on them when I realized that the only way I would win would be by a massive attrition war.
You let the Vikings attack you?!? As soon as you can you need to sink their ships and make them go bankrupt. Whenever you see one of their ships it is your duty to sink it. Early on they can't replace the lost ship and it hurts their ability to raid and gather trade income. Keep the Swedes out of the Isles!

It happens sometimes.
Had a Welsh campaign that was going very well (I thought) Built up to bandits and had a good treasury.
War with Mercia - a series of battles reduced them to rebel status
no time to refit and recruit
War with the Saxons - a series of hard fought battles; pillaged a cpl provinces along our border and tried to regroup; more battles, the supply of troops seems endless but I have them in check
Re-appearance of Mercia; the rebels flock to the banner of the new pretender and they get some very nice commanders
A few more battles and I simply resigned; never lost a battle but attrition had eaten my treasury and destroyed my armies
Oh well:oops:

I once lost one as Northumbria. The Vikings raided the crap out of me right from the start. Every time I got something built, they invaded and destroyed it. Right about the time I managed to see off the last of the raiders and build my first unit of huscarles, I was attacked by Picts from the north and swarms of Mercian huscarles from the south. My decimated economy and military couldn't hold up under the assault. :embarassed:

The Irish are actually pretty easy. The massed javelin volleys of the Bonnachts deal out some serious damage to those Viking/Saxon Huscarles. You also have decent infantry, the Gallowglasses. The Picts are harder than both the Irish and the Welsh IMHO.
yeh, i find the irish one of the easier factions, javelins are perhaps the most devastating unit in game, and gallows can match most infantry when charging, just look after the flanks and they are a very strong fighting faction...
I found the skirmishers useless. I think I have a glitch in my game, as the skirmishers are late/dont run away when you put them on skirmish.
Raiding is a good strat, but constantly losing and retreating lowers loyalty.

No, it's not a glitch, successful skirmishing needs micromanagement. You can't leave the AI to handle it. Either they run away too soon, or too late, or never fire. It's why the AIs skirmishers are so easy to beat :laugh4:

Skirmishers on the stand ground option do the tick.

Bandit - Have look at a thread I started about my Irish campaign
https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showthread.php?t=63473
I had Saxon problems and defeated them by a combination slash and burn and assasination. My problem was that my army was depleted by war with the Mercians and the Saxons were valoured up and relatively untouched. I think I was a little lucky, but I weathered the storm and I am about to close out the campaign. I even have a foothold in Scandanavia having just bribed some viking rebels - so it is full on for an ultimate 100% victory.:2thumbsup:
I did do micromanagement, I told them to retreat, and they stalled. When you put them on skirmish, they dont listen to where you want them to go, so collide into flanking enemys.
