My computers acting iritic, at start-up a popup advertising some crap appears when I go to my internet browser it forces it to go to another website, no-mater how many times I try to change it back, if I’m offline I just keeps on trying to do it. The thing is the website its trying to force me to go to is advertised as anti-spyware software, but my current virus checker doesn’t like it and blocks it. And a minute ago it just closed all my browsers for no reason.
And is securityuptodate .net dodgy or is it really trying to help me
Anyone recommend a good free one because im at a loose end

I use Spybot search and destroy http://www.safer-networking.org/ and the current windows defender that you can download from microsoft http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/software/default.mspx

There is also Ad-Aware http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/

Edit: securityuptodate.net is dodgy I think

Securityuptodate.net I think is dodgy.

For the first time ever yesterday I got a browser pop up which tried to look genuine by saying my computer might be running slow and do I want to clean it up.

I disconected from the itnernet before closing any windows as to make sure not to download anything.

I happend to get the pop up a few days after clicking a freinds bad Mysapce link. I think.

Anyway try windows defender which can be found on the windwos site in security I think.

Ad aware is also a very good choice. I would also recomend Spybot search and destroy.

All those should get rid of the problem.

Also for the browser hijack try coolwebs shreader. And if the problem still persists download hijackthis and run it in safe mode.

That's really a last resort hijack this as it envolves you deleteing all the components manually in safe mode.

If you dont feel you know a lot about computers go for something like Adaware. If you feel you are an intermediate computer user then use Hijack This, you can pretty much stop any spyware in its tracks with that and then mop up with Adaware or similar afterwards. If you run Hijack This, be sure you know what you are doing, or if you dont then ASK. Disabling something imporatant can be a bit of a problem. Also, I would highly recomend using a different browser (I assume you are using Internet Explorer 6), try Firefox or Opera.

Unfortunately that’s what I fell for

I managed to sort it on me own, I found what it was and Googled it and came to this (http://www.lavasoftsupport.com/index.php?showtopic=405)
I used ewido anti-malware 3.5 (http://www.ewido.net/en/download/) and XoftSpy (http://www.free-scanner.com/).
It seems to be alright now
I also used Spybot a long time ago but I forgot about it
I thank you for all your help

Did it say something like SpywareQuake?
Its probably a variant of SpyAxe.

Smitrem (http://noahdfear.geekstogo.com/) may be what you need.

Ah yes.

Spyaxe,spyfalcon and spysheriff.

Got to hate them all. ~:)

Winfixer as well is jsut argh.

Best thing to do is just surf on normal sites you trust and keep an active firewall. ~:)

There's a lovely selection of geek-approved anti-spyware products listed in the "Open Source and Freeware" thread stickied at the top of this section.
